Chapter 18 - The Key

On my seventieth birthday, Daniel gave me a small box.
Inside was a key.
I stared at him.
“What does this open?”
“Nothing.”
I frowned.
He laughed.
“Turn it over.”
Engraved on the key were the words:
YOURS. ALWAYS.
My throat tightened.
“That's terribly sentimental.”
“I learned from you.”
Jessica stood beside him.
Their marriage had survived, though not unchanged.
They had spent months rebuilding it.
I stayed out of that work.
Some repairs belong to the people who caused the damage.
Jessica handed me another package.
Inside was a framed photograph of the restored house.
White fence.
Red door.
Roses climbing the porch.
No rental signs.
No numbered keys.
Just home.
Then Daniel said something I had waited almost two years to hear.
“Thank you for not giving up on me.”
I looked at him.
“I almost did.”
“I know.”
“But you didn't give up on yourself.”
He nodded.
That was why we were standing together.
Forgiveness had not saved Daniel.
Consequences had forced him to decide whether he wanted to change.
He had.

That was what saved our relationship.
