Chapter 13 - The Hearing

Months after my return, I sat in a courthouse corridor beside Maya.
Daniel sat nearby.
Jessica sat farther down.
The matters involving Kevin had grown complicated, and several affected people had separate claims and proceedings.
I won't pretend the legal system delivered a dramatic five-minute conclusion.
It didn't.
There were delays.
Documents.
Arguments.
Questions.
But one thing became unmistakable.
My recorded deed had done exactly what Maya and I intended.
It protected my ownership.
The house was mine.
Not “basically” mine.
Not mine until somebody decided I was too old.
Mine.
When we walked outside, Daniel hugged me.
“I wish Dad could see this.”
I looked toward the bright California sky.
“He'd probably ask why we spent such a beautiful day indoors.”
Daniel laughed.
May you like
That sounded exactly like Robert.
