Chapter 12 - The Red Door Rule

I eventually created what Rosa jokingly called “Margaret's Red Door Rule.”

Nobody entered my home using assumption as a key.

Not Daniel.

Not Jessica.

Not friends.

Love was welcome.

Entitlement wasn't.

Daniel began calling before visits.

At first it felt ridiculous.

Then respectful.

Jessica did the same.

One afternoon she arrived carrying a climbing rose.

I stared at it.

“Daniel already tried that.”

“I know.”

“So?”

“This one is from me.”

I considered refusing.

Then I opened the gate.

We planted it on the opposite side of the porch.

Two roses.

Two people who had hurt me.

Two chances to become something different.

Not erasure.

May you like

Growth.
