Chapter 16 - The Guest Who Returned

A year after the confrontation, one of the original renters came back.
His name was Michael.
He had been the man who paid thousands for the weekend.
When I opened the red door, he looked embarrassed.
“I promise I'm not checking in.”
I laughed.
He handed me a small box.
Inside was a wind chime.
“I remember someone saying yours disappeared.”
I stared at it.
“I thought you might want another.”
“That is extraordinarily kind.”
He shrugged.
“Your terrible weekend became a story my family still tells.”
“Oh dear.”
“My teenage daughter says you're a legend.”
I laughed harder.
Michael helped me hang the wind chime.
When the ocean breeze caught it, the sound traveled across the porch.
Not the same as the old one.
Different.
That was all right.
