Chapter 17 - The Vineyard Came Back to Life

A year passed.

Then another.

The transformation was nearly unbelievable.

Rows that had once appeared dead now stretched green across the hills.

Aleandro hired local workers.

Eva managed restoration.

She proved far better at it than he was.

Their first small harvest produced only a few hundred bottles.

Eva designed the label.

A simple green vine emerging from dark wood.

No family crest.

No Marone symbolism.

She named it Second Harvest.

When Aleandro saw the finished bottle, he understood immediately.

“So subtle.”

Eva smiled.

“I learned from you.”

“You learned badly.”

They hosted a harvest dinner.

Victor attended.

Several neighbors came.

Musicians played beneath lights strung across the courtyard.

People laughed where silence had once seemed permanent.

Near midnight Aleandro found Eva standing alone beside the original vine where they had discovered the first green shoot.

“You disappeared.”

“I’m right here.”

He joined her.

Eva touched the leaves.

“Do you remember?”

“Yes.”

“I thought everything here was dead.”

“So did I.”

Eva looked up.

Aleandro realized she was no longer talking about the vineyard.

May you like

Neither was he.
