Chapter 7 - The Truth Aleandro Could No Longer Hide

Eva found the photograph accidentally.
Aleandro had left an old newspaper clipping inside a desk drawer.
The headline contained his name.
MARONE HEIR QUESTIONED AFTER ORGANIZED CRIME INVESTIGATION.
Eva read the article twice.
When Aleandro entered, she held it up.
“You’re Mafia.”
He stopped.
“Was.”
“You lied.”
“I avoided answering.”
“That’s lying with better grammar.”
Aleandro almost smiled, but her face stopped him.
Eva stepped backward.
“You knew Tyler’s people because they were your enemies.”
“Yes.”
“You could have told me.”
“I should have.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because you were already terrified of men.”
The answer silenced her.
Aleandro continued.
“I didn’t want my name to become another reason.”
“Have you hurt people?”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
Eva swallowed.
“Have you killed people?”
Aleandro did not insult her with denial.
“Yes.”
She looked away.
“I’m trying not to be that man anymore.”
Eva whispered, “Can people really change?”
Aleandro looked through the window at the first green vine.
