Chapter 11 - Elena Makes Her Choice

The cellar tunnel smelled of damp stone and old earth.
Elena held Matteo's hand.
Luca walked behind them.
Stefano led.
Two guards remained at the entrance to delay whoever had entered the villa.
Elena heard shouting above.
No gunfire.
Not yet.
She was grateful.
Matteo began crying.
"Elena."
"I'm here."
"I'm scared."
"I know."
She stopped.
Luca nearly collided with her.
"What are you doing?"
"Matteo."
She crouched.
The tunnel was dark except for phone flashlights.
"Look at me."
Matteo did.
"Can you breathe with me?"
He nodded.
"In."
They inhaled.
"Out."
Again.
The crying slowed.
Luca watched.
Elena stood.
"Okay?"
Matteo nodded.
"Okay."
They continued.
After ten minutes, the tunnel opened into an abandoned storage building near the cliffs.
Cars waited outside.
Luca's men had anticipated another route.
They drove directly back toward Palermo.
Stefano came with them.
Luca said nothing to him.
Not yet.
At the villa, Stefano was placed under guard.
Matteo refused to sleep alone.
Elena sat beside him.
Luca remained near the doorway.
"Papa?"
"Yes."
"Am I really your son?"
Silence.
Elena's heart stopped.
Matteo had heard more than they realized.
Luca walked to the bed.
"Yes."
"But Uncle Stefano said—"
"I don't care what Stefano said."
"About the blood."
Luca sat.
Elena watched his face.
He could lie.
He didn't.
"Sometimes being a father starts with blood."
Matteo waited.
"And sometimes it starts when someone puts a baby in your arms and you realize your entire life has changed."
Matteo's eyes filled.
"Which one am I?"
"The second."
The boy looked down.
"Does that mean you're not my real papa?"
Luca immediately answered.
"No."
Matteo looked up.
"It means I'm your real papa because I've been here every day."
"What if you don't want me?"
Luca's expression broke.
He pulled Matteo against his chest.
"Never say that."
"Why?"
"Because there is nothing in this world that could make me stop wanting you."
Matteo cried.
So did Luca.
Quietly.
Elena looked away to give them privacy.
Later Matteo fell asleep between them.
Luca remained sitting.
"Thank you."
Elena looked over.
"For what?"
"For making me talk to him."
"You did that."
"I would have avoided it."
"Probably."
He gave a tired smile.
"You never make anything easier."
"That's not what nurses are for."
They sat in silence.
Then Luca said, "You should go."
Elena frowned.
"Where?"
"Home."
"You just said my apartment isn't safe."
"I'll secure it."
"Why?"
"Because this has gone too far."
"Meaning?"
"You nearly got trapped in that house."
"So did you."
"That's different."
"Why?"
"Because this is my life."
Elena stared.
"And now?"
He looked toward Matteo.
"You don't belong in it."
Something inside her hurt.
Luca continued.
"I should never have kept you near us."
"Kept me?"
"You know what I mean."
"No, actually."
He stood.
"I can arrange anything you need. Another apartment. Another city. Money—"
"Stop."
Luca did.
"Do you think that's what I want?"
"No."
"Then why offer?"
"Because I don't know what else to give you."
The honesty softened her anger.
Elena stood.
"Luca, from the moment we met, you have tried to repay me."
"You saved Matteo."
"I know."
"I owe you."
"No."
"You do not understand—"
"I understand perfectly."
She moved closer.
"You keep turning emotion into debt because debts are easier."
His expression changed.
"You can repay debts."
"Yes."
"You can settle them."
"Yes."
"But you can't settle gratitude. Or fear. Or love."
The last word hung between them.
Neither moved.
Luca looked at Matteo.
Then Elena.
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Say things you don't mean."
"I didn't say I love you."
His mouth almost curved.
"Not yet."
Elena's heart beat faster.
"Arrogant."
"Observant."
The tension between them shifted.
Not danger.
Something else.
Luca stepped closer.
Then stopped.
Always control.
Always permission.
Elena realized he was waiting.
She closed the distance.
Their kiss was quiet.
Brief.
Nothing like the violence of their world.
When they separated, Luca rested his forehead against hers.
"This is a mistake."
"Probably."
"You should leave."
"Probably."
"Will you?"
"No."
A small laugh escaped him.
Then he kissed her again.
The next morning Elena made a decision.
Not about romance.
About herself.
She requested temporary leave from the hospital.
Then she called the police contact she trusted most—a senior investigator named Inspector Romano, who had worked with San Giovanni on several emergency cases.
She told him enough.
Not everything.
Enough.
Luca found her afterward.
"What did you do?"
"Started solving this legally."
His face hardened.
"Elena."
"No."
He closed his mouth.
She smiled.
"You're learning."
"Slowly."
"Bellini threatened me. Matteo was abducted. Someone infiltrated my workplace. Those are crimes."
"You think I don't know?"
"I think your instinct is revenge."
"And yours?"
"Evidence."
Luca looked at her.
"Evidence gets destroyed."
"Then protect it."
He understood.
Use his resources differently.
Not to punish.
To preserve.
By afternoon, the first pieces arrived.
Security footage.
Bank transfers.
Phone logs.
Employment records.
Elena organized them.
Luca's legitimate attorneys began reviewing everything.
Stefano agreed to testify if Matteo remained protected.
For the first time, they had a path that didn't require anyone disappearing.
But at sunset one of Luca's men entered the library.
"Boss."
"What?"
"Bellini released something online."
He showed them.
A video.
Marco Bellini sat behind a table.
Calm.
Smiling.
He spoke directly into the camera.
"Palermo deserves to know the truth about Luca Santoro."
Elena felt Luca tense.
Bellini continued.
"He is raising another man's child while pretending that boy will inherit the Santoro name."
Then he revealed private documents from the fertility clinic.
Within minutes, the video spread.
Luca's phone began ringing.
One call.
Then five.
Then dozens.
Elena looked at him.
"Don't react."
Luca smiled without humor.
"You don't know my family."
"No."
She took his phone and turned it off.
"But they're going to learn something about you."
"What?"
"Whether they matter more than Matteo."
Luca looked upstairs.
Then at Elena.
And for the second time that week, he made a decision that would have shocked everyone who knew his name.
"Call a press conference."
Elena stared.
"What are you going to say?"
May you like
"The truth."
