Chapter 12 - Behind the Locked Door

The press conference lasted seven minutes.
Luca Santoro stood before cameras outside one of his legitimate companies.
No bodyguards visible.
No prepared statement in his hand.
Elena watched from inside.
Matteo remained home with Signora Russo.
Reporters shouted questions.
"Is Matteo Santoro your biological son?"
"Did your wife deceive you?"
"Are the documents authentic?"
"Is there a succession crisis inside your organization?"
Luca waited.
Then he spoke.
"Matteo Santoro is my son."
The shouting increased.
Luca continued.
"I learned yesterday that due to circumstances surrounding a fertility clinic used by my late wife and me, we may not share biological DNA."
More questions.
"It changes nothing."
The crowd quieted slightly.
"I have raised Matteo since the day he was born. I have held him when he was sick, walked him to school, taught him to ride a bicycle, made terrible sandwiches for him, and spent every night of my life worrying about his safety."
Elena smiled despite herself.
Luca looked directly toward the camera.
"Any person who believes fatherhood can be reduced to a laboratory result knows nothing about being a father."
That line spread across Sicily within the hour.
But Luca wasn't finished.
"My family has also been involved in business structures that belong to another era."
Elena's heart beat harder.
This was the part nobody expected.
"Those structures are ending."
Journalists erupted.
Luca continued calmly.
"All Santoro holdings will undergo independent legal review. Any company operating outside the law will be closed or transferred to authorities."
Somewhere in Palermo, decades of tradition shattered.
Elena knew Luca was making enemies.
But she also knew he was choosing the future over the past.
When he returned inside, his phone contained fifty-three missed calls.
"How bad?" Elena asked.
"Half my relatives want me dead."
"Only half?"
He looked at her.
"You're enjoying this."
"A little."
Then an older man appeared at the end of the corridor.
Elena had never seen him.
Luca stopped.
"Uncle Vittorio."
Vittorio Santoro was nearly seventy.
Thin.
Elegant.
Eyes like Luca's, but without warmth.
"You humiliated this family."
Luca remained calm.
"No."
"You announced our private matters to strangers."
"Bellini did that."
"You confirmed them."
"Because Matteo will never grow up believing I was ashamed of him."
Vittorio glanced at Elena.
"This is her influence."
Elena folded her arms.
Luca said, "Don't."
Vittorio ignored him.
"You arrived weeks ago and suddenly Luca abandons generations of responsibility."
"I arrived because your grand-nephew almost got hit by a car."
"An unfortunate accident."
Elena's instincts sharpened.
"Interesting wording."
Vittorio looked at her.
"What?"
"Most people call it an accident after knowing what happened."
Silence.
Luca slowly turned toward his uncle.
"How did you know?"
Vittorio's expression barely changed.
"Everyone knows."
"The attempted abduction has not been made public."
Elena saw the mistake land.
Luca did too.
"Uncle."
Vittorio's eyes hardened.
"You think Bellini acted alone?"
Luca stepped forward.
"Office."
Vittorio laughed.
"You still believe you're in control."
"Office."
The older man obeyed.
Elena followed.
Luca didn't stop her.
Inside, Vittorio poured himself water.
"Your father would be disgusted."
"My father is dead."
"And his work dies with you."
"Perhaps."
Vittorio looked at Elena.
"Do you know what his father built?"
"I know what it cost."
Vittorio smiled coldly.
"Romantic."
Luca's patience ended.
"What did you know about Matteo?"
"Enough."
"Before the rain?"
"Yes."
"Did you help Bellini?"
Vittorio remained silent.
Luca's face changed.
"Did you?"
"I tried to save this family."
"By endangering a six-year-old?"
"By exposing the problem."
"Matteo is not a problem."
"He is not Santoro blood."
Luca moved so fast Elena barely saw it.
He stopped inches from Vittorio.
But did not touch him.
"Say that about my son again."
Vittorio stared.
"Then what?"
Luca's voice became quiet.
"Then you will discover exactly how little I care about your definition of family."
Vittorio looked away first.
That mattered.
He admitted Bellini had approached him months earlier.
Bellini knew about the fertility clinic.
He promised to reveal Matteo's origins.
Vittorio wanted to prevent a public scandal.
"So you helped him?"
"I gave him access to information."
"Names?"
"Some."
"Security schedules?"
"No."
"Who did?"
Vittorio hesitated.
"Someone else."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Luca slammed one palm against the desk.
"Stop lying."
Vittorio flinched.
Elena watched carefully.
He was hiding something.
Not protecting Bellini.
Protecting someone closer.
"Who has access to Matteo's schedule?" Elena asked.
Vittorio glanced at her.
"Family."
"Specifically?"
"Several people."
"Who knew Matteo wanted to visit Sofia's grave?"
Silence.
Luca turned.
"Who?"
Vittorio closed his eyes.
"Signora Russo."
Elena's stomach dropped.
"No."
"She spoke to Bellini."
Luca stared.
"You're lying."
"I heard the call."
"When?"
"Two days before Matteo disappeared."
Elena stepped backward.
Signora Russo.
The woman who had cared for Matteo.
Who had brought Elena clothes.
Who had known Sofia.
It seemed impossible.
Then Matteo's voice came from the doorway.
"Nonna Russo?"
Everyone turned.
He stood there.
Pale.
Signora Russo behind him.
Her face looked older than Elena had ever seen it.
She looked at Luca.
Then Vittorio.
"So."
Her voice was quiet.
"You finally told him."
Luca stared at her.
"Tell me what?"
Signora Russo looked toward Matteo.
"Not here."
Luca's voice hardened.
"Now."
She closed her eyes.
"I spoke to Bellini."
Elena felt sick.
"Why?"
Signora Russo looked at Luca.
"Because for six years I have been waiting for the chance to find out what truly happened to my daughter."
The room became silent.
Luca stared.
"Your daughter?"
Signora Russo looked toward Sofia's photograph on the wall.
"My name was not always Russo."
Her eyes filled.
"Sofia was my child."

And suddenly a woman everyone thought was a housekeeper became the keeper of the oldest secret in the Santoro family.
