Chapter 18 - The Debt That Became a Promise

Matteo planned the dinner.
That alone should have frightened everyone.
At seven years old, his concept of formal dining involved pizza, chocolate cake, and wearing a tie crooked enough to concern Lucia.
Elena arrived in the dining room.
The table was covered in flowers.
Far too many.
"Luca."
He raised both hands.
"Not me."
Matteo appeared.
"It was me."
"Why?"
"Special dinner."
"For what?"
"You'll see."
Rain the Rottweiler trotted behind him wearing a ribbon.
Elena stared at Luca.
"Did you approve this?"
"I was instructed not to interfere."
"By a seven-year-old."
"He was persuasive."
Dinner was surprisingly normal.
No business discussions.
No legal troubles.
No bodyguards coming through doors.
Lucia told stories about Sofia as a child.
Luca complained when Matteo revealed that he still slept with a stuffed lion.
"You told her?"
"You told everybody about my dinosaur."
"That was evidence."
"Still."
After dessert, Matteo stood.
He pulled folded paper from his pocket.
"I wrote a speech."
Elena covered her mouth.
Luca looked terrified.
"Did anyone review this speech?"
"No."
"Fantastic."
Matteo cleared his throat.
"When Elena found me, I was scared."
The room became quiet.
"I thought Mama wanted me to find her."
He looked down briefly.
"But I got lost."
Elena's eyes filled.
"Elena didn't know me. She didn't know Papa. She didn't know anything."
Matteo smiled.
"But she ran anyway."
Luca looked at Elena.
Matteo continued.
"Then Papa made her come home."
Elena looked at Luca.
"I did not make—"
"You absolutely did."
Lucia laughed.
Matteo raised one hand.
"I'm still talking."
Everyone obeyed.
"Papa was sad before Elena."
Luca sighed.
"Very subtle."
"And angry."
"Matteo."
"And bossy."
Elena whispered, "Accurate."
"Then Elena told him no a lot."
"Also accurate."
"And now Papa smiles more."
Luca looked down.
Matteo turned to Elena.
"And I don't hide under tables anymore."
That broke her.
Tears ran down Elena's face.
Matteo came around the table.
He handed her the paper.
At the bottom he had drawn three stick figures and a dog.
Above them:
OUR FAMILY
"You don't have to be my mama," Matteo said.
Elena's heart shattered.
"I know I have one."
He looked toward Sofia's photograph.
"But can you be Elena forever?"
She pulled him into her arms.
"I can try."
"No."
He leaned back.
"You always say try when you don't want to promise."
Luca laughed.
Elena stared at him.
"This is your fault."
"Almost certainly."
She looked at Matteo.
"Okay."
She took a breath.
"I promise I will always love you."
"Even if you go to Florence?"
"Even then."
"Even if Papa is annoying?"
"Especially then."
Matteo hugged her.
When he returned to his seat, Luca stood.
Elena narrowed her eyes.
"No."
He stopped.
"I haven't done anything."
"That look."
"What look?"
"The Luca-has-a-plan look."
Matteo covered his mouth.
Lucia suddenly became interested in her wine.
Elena stared.
"Oh no."
Luca walked around the table.
"No large audience."
"This is literally an audience."
"Four people and a dog."
"Still."
He stopped in front of her.
"No public restaurant. No cameras. No hundred roses."
"There are at least fifty roses here."
"Matteo."
"Thirty-seven," Matteo corrected.
Luca sighed.
Then looked at Elena.
"I've spent most of my life thinking love meant keeping people close enough that nothing could happen to them."
Elena listened.
"I was wrong."
His voice softened.
"Love is not a locked gate."
Lucia wiped her eyes.
"It is not a guard outside a door."
Luca reached into his pocket.
"It isn't knowing where someone is every minute."
Elena raised one eyebrow.
"We've discussed that."
"I know."
He smiled.
"Love is knowing they can leave and trusting what you built together enough to believe they might return."
Elena's chest tightened.
Luca knelt.
Matteo gasped theatrically despite obviously knowing.
Elena laughed through tears.
Luca held a small ring.
Nothing enormous.
Nothing designed to display wealth.
Simple.
Elegant.
"Elena Rossi."
His gray eyes held hers.
"You owe me nothing."
The words took her back to the rain.
To Matteo holding her legs.
To Luca saying a life created a debt.
"Neither do I owe you anything."
She smiled.
"Good."
"I love you because I choose to."
He took a breath.
"And every day you choose me back will be enough."
Elena was crying openly now.
"Will you marry me?"
Matteo whispered loudly,
"Say yes."
Elena laughed.
Luca looked over.
"Give her a moment."
"She's taking too long."
Elena reached for Luca.
"Yes."
Matteo screamed.
Rain barked.
Lucia cried.
Luca stood and Elena wrapped her arms around him.
For several seconds, the world outside that room did not exist.
Later they sat outside beneath stars.
Palermo glowed below.
"You realize marrying me may be complicated," Luca said.
Elena rested her head against him.
"You realize meeting you was complicated."
"Fair."
"There's one condition."
His body tensed.
"Name it."
"No surveillance jewelry."
"Agreed."
"No investigating my friends."
"Reasonable."
"No making decisions about my career."
"Agreed."
"No buying the hospital."
Luca hesitated.
Elena lifted her head.
"Luca."
"I haven't bought it."
"You thought about it."
"The administration is inefficient."
She stared.
He laughed.
"I'm joking."
"You'd better be."
Luca looked toward the lights.
"One condition from me."
"What?"
"Never run into traffic again."
"I can't promise that."
"Elena."
"If a child is there?"
He sighed.
"Fine."
She smiled.
"See? Compromise."
He kissed her forehead.
The old world had not disappeared entirely.
Trials continued.
Newspaper stories resurfaced.
Some relatives still hated Luca.
Some former associates would never forgive him.
But the fear that had once governed everything was gone.
They had survived because secrets finally became truth.
Debt became gratitude.
Control became trust.
And the child who once ran away looking for his dead mother had somehow brought two lonely adults together.
Only one thing remained.
A wedding.
May you like
And because this was the Santoro family, even that would refuse to happen quietly.
