Chapter 17 - The Man Who Came After Her

Luca recovered at the villa.

Elena planned to stay one week.

Then return to Florence.

On the third evening, she found a folder on the library desk.

Her name was written across it.

She opened it.

Inside were documents related to a new medical foundation.

Emergency care grants.

Nursing scholarships.

Funding for rural Sicilian clinics.

At the bottom:

Elena Rossi Foundation for Emergency Nursing

Her anger arrived instantly.

"Luca!"

He appeared from the hall wearing a shoulder sling.

"What?"

She held up the folder.

"What is this?"

He looked.

Then immediately realized the problem.

"I was going to ask."

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

"You named a foundation after me before asking?"

"Technically the name isn't registered."

"You designed the entire thing!"

"It seemed efficient."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Luca."

"I'm improving."

"Are you?"

"Slowly."

She tried not to smile.

Failed.

"What is it?"

"A foundation."

"I gathered that."

"You said once hospitals outside major cities don't have enough emergency nurses."

Elena remembered.

Months ago.

One conversation.

He had remembered.

"So you built this?"

"I funded the structure."

"Why?"

Luca looked genuinely confused.

"Because you're right."

That disarmed her.

"You can't buy me a career in Palermo."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

He approached.

"This does not require you to stay."

"Then why use my name?"

"Because you inspired it."

Elena sat.

"You're terrible at normal romance."

"I've heard."

"What happens if I go back to Florence?"

"The foundation launches anyway."

"And if I don't want my name attached?"

"I change it."

She studied him.

Old Luca would have argued.

New Luca waited.

"Keep the project."

He nodded.

"Change the name."

A small disappointment crossed his face.

"To what?"

"Sofia Santoro Emergency Nursing Foundation."

Luca stopped.

Elena smiled gently.

"She wanted a different future too."

His eyes filled.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He sat beside her.

"Thank you."

Matteo entered carrying Rain.

The puppy was far too large to be carried comfortably.

"Elena, are you staying?"

"Matteo."

"What?"

"You ask every day."

"Eventually you'll say yes."

Luca looked at Elena.

"Persistent."

"He gets it from you."

Matteo dropped onto the rug.

"Papa says you're going back."

"For now."

"Why?"

"My job is there."

"You can work here."

"That's not the only reason."

"What other reason?"

Elena looked at Luca.

"Because I need to know that if I stay, nobody expects me to become somebody else."

Luca understood.

Matteo didn't.

"You can still be Elena."

She smiled.

"Exactly."

Luca looked at her.

"You can."

Simple.

No promises of perfection.

No grand declaration.

Just permission she didn't technically need—but needed to hear.

The following day Luca drove her into Palermo.

No convoy.

No guards visible.

Just one car.

He parked near the street where they had met.

The rain had stopped.

People walked normally.

A café occupied the corner.

Elena stood on the sidewalk.

"Why here?"

"I come sometimes."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"To remember."

"The worst night of your life?"

"No."

He looked toward the spot where Matteo had stood.

"The night my life changed."

Elena's throat tightened.

"I thought you were insane."

"You called me a terrible father."

"You deserved it."

"Probably."

They walked.

Luca stopped beneath the yellow lamp.

"I used to think saving someone created a debt."

"I remember."

"I was wrong."

"Yes."

"You don't have to sound so pleased."

"I've waited months."

He smiled.

Then became serious.

"You saved Matteo."

Elena listened.

"Then you saved me from becoming something I didn't want to be."

"Luca—"

"I'm not saying I owe you."

She smiled.

"Good."

"I'm saying I choose you."

He held her gaze.

"Without debt. Without obligation. Without expectation."

Elena felt tears burn.

"And if I leave again?"

"I'll hate it."

She laughed through the tears.

"But?"

"I'll drive you to the station."

"And if I stay?"

"I'll probably irritate you every day."

"Definitely."

"I'll try not to investigate your groceries."

"That's a good start."

He took her hand.

Elena looked down.

No ring.

No grand gesture.

Just his hand.

For once, that was enough.

Then a familiar voice spoke behind them.

"Beautiful."

They turned.

Stefano stood several yards away.

Luca immediately moved in front of Elena.

Stefano raised his hands.

"Relax."

"Why are you here?"

"I was released."

"Temporarily."

"With conditions."

Luca said nothing.

Stefano looked older.

Smaller somehow.

"I wanted to apologize."

"To me?"

"To both of you."

Elena folded her arms.

"Why?"

"Because I spent my entire life believing family meant inheritance."

He looked toward Luca.

"You proved me wrong."

Luca's expression remained guarded.

Stefano continued.

"I gave investigators everything."

"I know."

"I'll probably never come back to Sicily."

"Probably wise."

Stefano smiled sadly.

Then looked at Elena.

"You changed him."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Stefano frowned.

"He changed himself."

Luca looked at her.

That mattered.

Stefano left.

No forgiveness.

Not yet.

But perhaps one day.

That night Elena called Florence.

She didn't resign.

Instead she requested a transfer arrangement.

Three weeks each month in Palermo.

One week in Florence supporting training.

Her supervisor agreed to a six-month trial.

Elena hung up.

Luca stood in the doorway.

"Well?"

"I'm staying."

He stared.

"In Palermo?"

"Mostly."

His expression slowly changed.

"Mostly?"

"Don't push it."

Luca crossed the room.

He kissed her.

From the hall Matteo shouted,

"I knew it!"

Elena laughed against Luca's mouth.

But neither of them knew that Matteo had one more plan.

May you like

And unlike Luca's plans, this one was impossible for Elena to refuse.
