Chapter 16 - Elena Leaves Palermo

Florence was beautiful.

Elena hated it for the first month.

That wasn't Florence's fault.

The hospital position was everything she had once wanted.

She supervised an emergency nursing team.

Her apartment overlooked a narrow street filled with bicycles and cafés.

Nobody followed her.

Nobody investigated her groceries.

Nobody placed tracking devices inside jewelry.

Her life was ordinary again.

For twelve days, ordinary felt wonderful.

Then it felt quiet.

Matteo called every evening.

"Today Papa burned pasta."

"How?"

"He forgot water."

"That's impossible."

"I saw it."

In the background Luca shouted, "It did not happen that way."

Matteo whispered loudly, "It did."

Elena laughed until her stomach hurt.

Luca and Elena spoke afterward.

Never too long.

Never with pressure.

"How was work?"

"Busy."

"Did you eat?"

"Yes."

"Actually?"

"You're still annoying."

"Distance doesn't cure everything."

She missed him most after hanging up.

Luca never asked when she was coming back.

That was almost worse.

Two months passed.

Then three.

The legal investigations continued.

Vittorio remained in custody.

Bellini cooperated.

Several former associates were charged.

Stefano entered a protection arrangement after giving evidence.

Luca faced no charges for the most serious historical operations because investigators found he had delegated many questionable structures inherited from his father, though several companies paid large penalties.

He sold assets.

Closed others.

And began restructuring the remaining businesses.

One afternoon Elena received a photograph.

Matteo holding a puppy.

A Rottweiler.

She called immediately.

"No."

Luca answered.

"Hello to you too."

"You bought him a dog."

"He was persuasive."

"You said absolutely not."

"I changed my mind."

"What's the dog's name?"

A pause.

"Elena."

She stared at her phone.

"You named the dog after me?"

"It was Matteo."

From the background:

"Papa suggested it!"

Elena burst out laughing.

Luca shouted something.

The phone shifted.

Matteo came on.

"We changed it."

"To what?"

"Rain."

Elena became quiet.

"Why Rain?"

"Because Papa says the rain brought you to us."

Her eyes filled.

"That's unfair."

"What?"

"Nothing."

That night, she cried again.

Not because she was unhappy.

Because happiness existed in two places now.

Months earlier she thought the choice was between independence and love.

Florence taught her that wasn't true.

She could survive alone.

She could build a career.

She could wake every morning knowing her life belonged to her.

And none of that stopped her from wanting Luca.

That realization frightened her more than dependence ever could.

At work, Elena met Dr. Samuel Grant, an American-Italian trauma specialist transferred from Boston.

He was funny.

Kind.

Safe.

After several weeks he asked her to dinner.

Elena almost said no automatically.

Then she thought of Luca telling her to choose herself.

So she said yes.

Dinner was pleasant.

Samuel made her laugh.

He listened.

He wasn't surrounded by danger or family secrets.

At the end, he walked her home.

"I'd like to see you again."

Elena smiled.

"You're wonderful."

"But?"

"I'm in love with someone."

Samuel nodded.

"That tends to complicate second dates."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be."

He looked at her carefully.

"Does he love you?"

"Yes."

"Is he an idiot?"

Elena laughed.

"Frequently."

"Then maybe go tell him."

She watched Samuel walk away.

Two days later Matteo called.

But it wasn't Matteo.

Lucia appeared on screen.

"Where is he?" Elena asked.

"Sleeping."

"Is everything okay?"

Lucia hesitated.

"Luca will be angry."

"Good."

"He was injured."

Elena stood.

"What?"

"Car accident."

The room disappeared around her.

"When?"

"Yesterday."

"Why didn't anyone call me?"

"He told us not to."

Elena was already packing.

"How bad?"

"Broken ribs. Shoulder injury. Nothing life-threatening."

Her hands shook.

"Where?"

"San Giovanni."

Of course.

The place where everything began.

Elena booked the next train south.

During the journey Luca finally called.

"You shouldn't come."

"Go to hell."

"Elena."

"You were in a car accident and told nobody to tell me?"

"It wasn't serious."

"Broken ribs."

"Two."

"Lucia said three."

"She exaggerates."

"I hate you."

"No, you don't."

She closed her eyes.

"No."

Her voice broke.

"I really don't."

Silence.

Then Luca said,

"I miss you."

The words were quiet.

No strategy.

No pride.

Elena looked through the train window.

Italy blurred past.

"I miss you too."

"When do you arrive?"

"Four hours."

"I'll send someone."

"No."

A pause.

"Taxi."

"Fine."

She smiled through tears.

Some habits never died.

When Elena reached San Giovanni, she found Luca sitting upright despite instructions.

Matteo was asleep in a chair beside him.

Rain the dog lay under the bed.

Elena stopped in the doorway.

Luca looked up.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he smiled.

"Hello, nurse."

Elena crossed the room.

She slapped his uninjured shoulder lightly.

He winced.

"Ow."

"Good."

Then she kissed him.

Matteo woke.

"Elena!"

He launched himself toward her.

Rain barked.

Nurses complained.

Luca laughed until his ribs hurt.

And for the first time Elena understood what coming home actually felt like.

But she had not yet decided to stay.

Because there was still one final question she needed Luca to answer.

Not whether he loved her.

May you like

Whether he could build a life with her without trying to own it.
