Chapter 10 - A Billionaire Searches Chicago

Ariana did not react.
That was one of the things Adrian had always underestimated about her.
People saw softness and assumed weakness.
Mercer made the same mistake.
“You’re lying,” she said.
“Am I?”
“My daughter wasn’t even conceived when Richard Vale died.”
“Promises can concern bloodlines rather than people.”
Ariana held Rose closer.
“What promise?”
Mercer walked toward an old steel desk.
He opened a folder.
Inside was a document.
Ariana could not read it from where she sat.
“The Vale-Harrington agreement began as debt.”
“I know.”
“No. You know the version Adrian was told.”
Mercer lifted the pages.
“Richard Vale borrowed more money than any public record shows. By the time his company recovered, Theodore Harrington had enough leverage to take significant ownership.”
“Then why didn’t he?”
“Because Richard offered something better.”
Ariana felt cold.
“What?”
“Future control through marriage.”
Vanessa.
Adrian.
The planned engagement had not begun with their generation.
Their fathers had arranged the possibility years earlier.
“Adrian didn’t know.”
“Of course not.”
“Vanessa?”
“She knew parts.”
Ariana thought of Vanessa’s obsession.
The deliberate manipulation.
The certainty that Adrian belonged with her.
Perhaps she had been raised believing exactly that.
Mercer continued.
“Richard’s death complicated things. Adrian married you.”
He said the word as though Ariana were an accounting error.
“That created risk.”
“So you tried to destroy us.”
“I gave Adrian information.”
“False information.”
“Information becomes true when people believe it.”
Ariana stared at him.
“That sounds like something cowards tell themselves.”
Mercer’s smile disappeared.
Outside, Adrian nearly smiled despite everything.
That was Ariana.
Mercer walked closer.
“The plan was simple. Adrian divorces you. Marries Vanessa. Their first child becomes the bridge between both empires.”
“And Rose ruined that.”
“Yes.”
“Because she’s Adrian’s heir.”
“And because she proves the Harrington marriage would not produce the uncontested first descendant.”
Ariana looked down at her daughter.
Rose had no idea billions of dollars and decades of corruption surrounded her tiny existence.
“What do you want?”
Mercer’s eyes went toward Rose.
“A signature.”
“Whose?”
“Yours.”
He placed documents on a table.
Ariana read the title.
Voluntary relinquishment of parental rights.
She laughed.
Mercer looked confused.
“No.”
“You haven’t read it.”
“I don’t need to.”
“If you sign, you and your family live.”
“And Rose?”
“She will be placed under a private guardianship until matters are resolved.”
“No.”
“You are not in a position to refuse.”
“I already did.”
Mercer nodded toward one of the men.
A laptop was placed in front of Ariana.
A live camera feed appeared.
Her aunt’s house.
Another feed.
Elena’s parents.
Ariana’s face tightened.
“Sign.”
Outside, Adrian saw everything through a small drone camera positioned near a broken window.
Miles whispered, “We go now.”
“One sniper line?”
“Two.”
“Rose is too close.”
“We wait until Mercer moves.”
Adrian could barely stand still.
Inside, Ariana picked up the pen.
Mercer smiled.
Then Rose began crying.
Loudly.
Ariana stood instinctively.
One guard moved toward her.
“Sit down.”
“She needs feeding.”
“Sit.”
“She is a three-month-old baby.”
Mercer gestured.
“Let her.”
Ariana moved toward the bag they had allowed her to bring.
It rested near the side door.
As she bent to retrieve a bottle, she saw something through a gap in the warehouse wall.
A tiny red light.
Then darkness.
Again.
Red.
Dark.
Three times.
Her heart almost stopped.
A signal.
Someone was outside.
Adrian?
She forced herself not to look again.
She prepared the bottle.
Walked back.
Mercer pushed the document toward her.
“After she eats.”
Ariana sat.
She fed Rose slowly.
Every second mattered.
Outside, Miles counted positions.
“One near west door.”
“Two by Mercer.”
“Another on upper level.”
“And fifth?”
“Unknown.”
Adrian looked through the monitor.
The fifth man appeared behind Ariana.
Armed.
Too close.
Miles whispered, “On my signal.”
Inside, Ariana looked down at Rose.
“My beautiful girl,” she whispered.
Mercer rolled his eyes.
“Spare us.”
Ariana ignored him.
“Daddy is very stubborn, you know.”
Mercer looked toward her.
Outside, Adrian froze.
“He thinks he can fix everything.”
Ariana’s voice remained soft.
“But sometimes he needs help.”
Adrian understood.
She knew.
“She’s preparing,” Miles whispered.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Ariana shifted Rose to her left arm.
Her right hand moved closer to the metal bottle warmer sitting on the table.
Mercer leaned forward.
“Sign.”
Ariana looked at him.
“Go to hell.”
Then she threw the warmer into the lights.
Darkness exploded across the warehouse.
“NOW!” Miles shouted.
Doors burst open.
Vale security entered from both sides.
Ariana dropped behind the steel desk, covering Rose with her body.
Shots cracked.
Someone screamed.
Adrian moved only after Miles cleared the entrance.
“Ariana!”
“Here!”
He followed her voice.
A man appeared from the darkness.
Adrian hit him before thinking.
The gun slid across concrete.
Miles restrained the attacker.
Adrian ran.
He found Ariana crouched behind the desk.
Rose was crying.
Ariana looked up.
For one second neither spoke.
Then Adrian dropped to his knees.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Rose?”
“She’s okay.”
He touched the back of Rose’s head.
Then Ariana’s face.
His hands shook.
“I thought…”
His voice broke.
Ariana had never seen Adrian cry.
Not at his father’s funeral.
Not when his company nearly collapsed.
Not even when their marriage ended.
Now tears moved openly down his face.
“I thought I lost you.”
Ariana’s anger, pain, and resistance collided with something older.
Love.
She hated that it was still there.
But it was.
Adrian lowered his forehead against hers.
“I’m sorry.”
Rose cried between them.
Ariana closed her eyes.
For three seconds she let herself lean into him.
Then Miles shouted.
“Mercer’s moving!”
Adrian turned.
Charles Mercer had reached the loading dock.
Security chased him.
A black sedan crashed through the side gate.
Mercer jumped inside.
The car sped away.
“Track it!” Adrian shouted.
Miles’ team followed.
But Mercer had prepared an escape.
The vehicle split from two identical sedans beneath an overpass.
All three disappeared in different directions.
By the time police established roadblocks, he was gone.
They recovered the documents from the warehouse.
Guardianship papers.
Trust amendments.
Payments.
And one handwritten agreement signed decades earlier.
Richard Vale.
Theodore Harrington.
Charles Mercer.
Adrian read it inside the ambulance while Ariana and Rose were examined.
One paragraph was underlined.
The first uncontested direct descendant of the combined Vale-Harrington line shall hold consolidated beneficial control.
Adrian stared.
A dynasty plan.
His father had treated future children like corporate assets.
Ariana sat beside him.
“So Vanessa was supposed to give birth to that child.”
“Yes.”
“And Rose made that impossible.”
“Yes.”
Ariana looked at her daughter.
“What happens now?”
Adrian folded the paper.
“Now I end it.”
“How?”
“I destroy the agreement. Mercer. Harrington. Anyone involved.”
Ariana studied him.
There was the old Adrian again.
War.
Power.
Control.
She touched his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“If you turn this into revenge, they still control you.”
“They kidnapped you.”
“I know.”
“They threatened Rose.”
“I know.”
“Then what do you want me to do?”
“Protect us.”
“I am.”
“Not by becoming them.”
Adrian stared into her eyes.
Slowly, his anger changed.
“Then we do it legally.”
Ariana nodded.
“With evidence.”
“Yes.”
“With the truth.”
“Yes.”
He took her hand.
She allowed it.
Only for a moment.
Then Miles approached.
“We found something on Mercer’s laptop.”
“What?”
“A scheduled email.”
“To whom?”
“The press.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does it say?”
Miles’ face was grim.
“If Mercer isn’t able to stop Rose’s legal recognition, he plans to destroy Ariana publicly.”
Ariana stared.
“How?”
Miles handed Adrian the tablet.
The headline of the prepared story read:
BILLIONAIRE’S ESTRANGED WIFE HID CHILD, DEMANDS FORTUNE IN PATERNITY SCANDAL.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
There were fabricated messages.
False financial records.
Edited photographs.
Enough to make Ariana look like a manipulative woman who had secretly conceived a child and planned to blackmail one of Chicago’s wealthiest men.
The story was scheduled to release at eight the next morning.
Adrian looked at Ariana.
“They’re going to make you the villain.”
Ariana took Rose from Elena.
Then she looked at him with a strength he had once forgotten.
May you like
“Then tomorrow,” she said, “we tell Chicago the truth first.”
