Chapter 15 - Vanessa’s Last Move

Pain came in waves.

Adrian heard people shouting.

Someone pressed cloth against his shoulder.

Then Ariana appeared above him.

Her face was white.

“What are you doing here?” he managed.

“Apparently saving your life badly.”

“You were supposed to be safe.”

“So were you.”

He almost laughed.

Then winced.

“You’ve been shot.”

“I noticed.”

“Don’t joke.”

“I’m trying not to pass out.”

Her eyes filled.

“Then stay with me.”

Adrian reached for her hand.

“I’m here.”

Security dragged Mercer down from the balcony alive.

Vanessa knelt beside her mother across the ballroom.

Eleanor shouted orders at paramedics despite having just been rescued from a hostage situation.

Miles appeared.

“Theodore isn’t here.”

Adrian’s eyes opened fully.

“What?”

“He left before we entered.”

Ariana looked around.

“He knew.”

“No,” Miles said. “Mercer says Theodore abandoned him twenty minutes before noon.”

Adrian forced himself upright.

“Where did he go?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Ariana’s face changed.

“Rose.”

Adrian stood despite the paramedic.

“No.”

Miles immediately called the team protecting the baby.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Adrian’s injury disappeared from his awareness.

“Where is she?”

“Safe house in Evanston.”

“Call local team.”

Miles tried.

Then his face went blank.

“Alarm triggered twelve minutes ago.”

Ariana stopped breathing.

Theodore had never wanted Ariana at the hotel.

That had been the distraction.

He wanted every major security asset focused on the hostages.

While Rose remained elsewhere.

Adrian pulled away from the medic.

“You need a hospital.”

“My daughter needs me.”

“You are bleeding.”

“Bandage it.”

Ariana grabbed his face.

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

“You collapse, you help nobody.”

He stared.

Then nodded.

The medic stabilized the wound during the drive.

No artery damage.

Bullet passed through soft tissue.

Painful.

Not immediately dangerous.

They reached Evanston in twenty minutes.

The safe house door was open.

Two agents were injured.

Alive.

Elena was gone.

Rose was gone.

Ariana made a sound Adrian would remember forever.

Not a scream.

Something quieter.

More broken.

He held her.

“We’ll find her.”

“Where is my baby?”

“We’ll find her.”

Miles searched the house.

Then came outside holding Rose’s stuffed rabbit.

A phone had been taped beneath it.

It rang.

Adrian answered.

Theodore Harrington.

“Now,” Theodore said, “you understand.”

“Where is Rose?”

“Safe.”

“If you touch her—”

“I have no intention of hurting the child.”

“Where is she?”

“Bring me the original Vale-Harrington agreement and the ledger.”

Adrian understood.

“The evidence.”

“Yes.”

“And Rose?”

“You receive her.”

“Where?”

“You’ll get instructions.”

Theodore ended the call.

Ariana stared at Adrian.

“You’re giving him everything.”

“Yes.”

Miles stepped closer.

“If we give up the originals—”

“I don’t care.”

“We have copies.”

“Theodore may know that.”

“Then we give him whatever makes him return Rose.”

Vanessa arrived behind them.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

She had followed with security.

“My father won’t return Rose.”

Ariana moved toward her.

“How do you know?”

“Because he doesn’t trust any of you.”

“Then what does he want?”

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“To leave the country with her.”

Adrian became still.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Against extradition.

Against Adrian.

Against the government.

A Vale heiress as a living shield.

Vanessa held out her phone.

“My father contacted me too.”

A message:

Come alone if you want redemption.

Adrian shook his head.

“You’re not going.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“This is the first time you’re worried about me?”

“I’m worried about anyone walking into a trap.”

“He’ll trust me.”

“No.”

Ariana spoke.

“She may be right.”

Adrian looked at her.

Ariana’s eyes were red but focused.

“Theodore believes Vanessa still wants his approval.”

Vanessa nodded.

“He always has.”

“What will you tell him?” Ariana asked.

“That I have the original ledger.”

Miles frowned.

“We can make a convincing copy.”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“And I tell him I want to leave with him.”

Adrian studied her.

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

She met his eyes.

“But Ariana trusted you once after you gave her every reason not to.”

Adrian flinched.

Vanessa looked at Ariana.

“Give me one chance to do something right.”

Ariana stared at the woman who had helped destroy her marriage.

Hatred would have been easy.

Refusal would have been understandable.

But Rose mattered more.

“Bring my daughter home,” Ariana said.

Vanessa nodded.

Theodore instructed Vanessa to meet him at a private marina north of Chicago.

A yacht waited.

The plan was obvious.

Cross Lake Michigan.

Reach another vehicle.

Then private air transport.

Federal teams positioned outside visual range.

Vanessa wore a hidden transmitter.

Adrian refused a hospital again.

His shoulder was immobilized.

Ariana stayed beside him in the surveillance van.

At sunset, Vanessa approached the marina carrying the fake ledger.

Theodore appeared.

He looked older than he had a week earlier.

Not defeated.

Unraveling.

“Where is the agreement?”

“Adrian has it.”

“I told you to bring both.”

“I could only steal the ledger.”

Theodore looked at her.

“You always were disappointing when it mattered.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Then she saw Elena on the yacht.

Tied near the cabin.

“Where is the baby?”

“Inside.”

Vanessa walked closer.

“Let me see her.”

“Give me the drive.”

She did.

Theodore checked it on a laptop.

Files opened.

He smiled.

“Good girl.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I’m coming with you.”

“No.”

Her face changed.

“What?”

“I don’t need you.”

“I’m your daughter.”

“You were useful when Adrian wanted you.”

The words destroyed something inside Vanessa.

In the van, Ariana watched.

Adrian whispered, “He never loved her.”

Ariana looked at him.

“No. He loved what she could do for him.”

Vanessa stared at her father.

Then slowly smiled.

“You know what the funny part is?”

“What?”

“I spent years trying to become exactly what you wanted.”

Theodore frowned.

“And?”

“I finally understand why Ariana won.”

His expression darkened.

“Won what?”

“Adrian.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not because she was prettier. Or smarter. Or richer.”

She stepped closer.

“She loved him when he was useless to her.”

Theodore reached for his gun.

Vanessa shouted, “NOW!”

Federal teams moved.

Theodore grabbed her.

Gun against her neck.

The marina exploded with commands.

“DROP THE WEAPON!”

Theodore dragged Vanessa toward the yacht.

Adrian watched helplessly.

Then Elena appeared behind him.

She had freed one hand.

She slammed a metal object into Theodore’s knee.

He fell.

Vanessa twisted away.

Agents rushed.

A gun discharged into the air.

Then Theodore Harrington was on the ground.

Handcuffed.

Alive.

Ariana was already running.

Adrian followed despite his shoulder.

She reached the yacht.

“Rose!”

Elena pointed toward the cabin.

Ariana opened the door.

Rose lay inside a portable crib.

Awake.

Safe.

Ariana lifted her daughter.

Her knees gave way.

Adrian caught both of them with his uninjured arm.

Rose began crying.

Ariana laughed and sobbed at the same time.

Adrian pressed his forehead against his daughter’s tiny head.

“My girl.”

For several minutes nothing else existed.

Later, as Theodore was placed inside a federal vehicle, Vanessa stood alone near the water.

Adrian approached.

“You saved Rose.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“I helped put her in danger.”

“And you helped bring her back.”

“That doesn’t erase anything.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“But it matters.”

Vanessa cried silently.

“I really did love you.”

Adrian answered gently.

“I know.”

“Just not correctly.”

He looked toward Ariana and Rose.

“I don’t think I knew how to love correctly either.”

Vanessa nodded.

“What happens now?”

“To you?”

“Yes.”

“You tell the truth.”

“And then?”

“You live with it.”

She gave a sad smile.

“Ariana said the same thing.”

“She’s usually right.”

Vanessa laughed through tears.

For the first time there was no rivalry.

No engagement.

No empire.

Only consequences.

Theodore Harrington was charged.

Mercer cooperated in exchange for consideration, implicating himself in Richard Vale’s death and the conspiracy against Ariana and Rose.

The immediate danger ended.

But three days later Adrian received another kind of blow.

The Vale board formally voted.

Adrian Vale was removed as chief executive.

He lost operational control of the empire he had sacrificed nearly everything to build.

Miles expected fury.

Adrian read the decision once.

Then walked into apartment 305.

Ariana sat holding Rose.

“How bad?” she asked.

“I’m unemployed.”

She blinked.

Then laughed.

Adrian smiled.

For the first time in his adult life, losing power did not feel like losing.

Because Rose reached toward him from Ariana’s arms.

And when Ariana allowed him to take his daughter, Adrian realized the hardest part of his life was only beginning.

He knew how to run an empire.

Now he had to learn how to become the kind of man his family might choose even when he had nothing to offer except himself.
