Chapter 11 - The Harrington Ledger

At 7:58 the next morning, every major business journalist in Chicago expected a scandal.

They got one.

Just not the scandal Charles Mercer had prepared.

At exactly eight, Vale Holdings released a public statement.

Adrian insisted on writing the opening himself.

My wife, Ariana Vale, and our infant daughter have been targeted through a coordinated campaign involving falsified records, illegal surveillance, financial manipulation, and threats. Any suggestion that Ariana acted improperly is false. The failure to protect and believe my wife was mine. I will not allow that failure to be used against her again.

Miles read the statement three times before publication.

“You understand what this does.”

“Yes.”

“You’re publicly accepting blame.”

“Yes.”

“Investors may hate it.”

“They can survive.”

“Your board may remove you.”

“Let them try.”

Ariana stood across the room.

“You don’t need to destroy yourself for me.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I’m not.”

“This could cost you control of the company.”

He shook his head.

“Losing control of a company is not destroying myself.”

He looked at Rose.

“I learned the difference.”

The statement exploded online.

Reporters surrounded Vale House.

Harrington stock fell.

Vale Holdings temporarily suspended trading in two public subsidiaries.

Vanessa disappeared from public view.

Theodore Harrington denied everything.

Charles Mercer became the subject of a federal warrant after the warehouse evidence was given to authorities.

Then came the ledger.

Vanessa had provided the USB drive before the kidnapping.

Miles’ team decrypted it overnight.

Theodore Harrington had kept records.

Not official accounting.

A private ledger.

Payments to Mercer.

Security contractors.

Private investigators.

Hospital employees.

A clerk who altered Rose’s birth record.

A Vale technology contractor who cloned Eleanor’s security credential.

Every lie had a price.

And Theodore had written them all down.

“Why would anyone keep this?” Ariana asked.

“Insurance,” Miles replied.

“Against whom?”

“Mercer.”

Adrian understood.

Criminal partnerships rarely depended on trust.

They depended on mutually assured destruction.

One entry was different.

A payment made eleven months earlier.

Five million dollars.

Recipient hidden behind another numbered company.

Miles traced it.

Then stared at the screen.

“What?”

Adrian came closer.

The recipient was not Mercer.

Not Vanessa.

Not a security contractor.

It connected to a company formerly controlled by Richard Vale.

Adrian’s dead father.

“That makes no sense.”

Miles checked again.

“The company remained active through a trust.”

“Who controls the trust?”

Miles looked at him.

“Mercer.”

Ariana sat nearby.

“Maybe Mercer was paying himself.”

“No,” Adrian said.

“The money went the other direction.”

From Harrington into an old Vale entity.

He stared at the dates.

Then saw something.

The first payment had occurred twelve years earlier.

Three weeks before Richard Vale died.

Adrian’s father’s death had been ruled a heart attack.

Sudden.

Natural.

He had been fifty-eight.

Adrian slowly sat.

“What if my father wasn’t just involved years ago?”

Miles understood.

“You think the payments relate to his death?”

“I don’t know.”

Ariana moved beside him.

“Adrian.”

He looked distant.

“I hated him when he died.”

She said nothing.

“I never told you that.”

“No.”

“He treated me like the company was the only child he wanted.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“When he died, everyone expected me to collapse. I didn’t.”

“You were twenty-eight.”

“I went to work the next morning.”

Ariana touched his hand.

“You were grieving.”

“I was relieved.”

He finally looked at her.

“And I hated myself for it.”

“You were allowed to feel both.”

Adrian stared at their hands.

“The last argument we had was about marriage.”

“Your marriage?”

“No. His plans for mine.”

Ariana’s expression changed.

“He wanted Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“He told me marrying a Harrington would secure everything.”

“And you refused.”

“I told him I would marry whoever I wanted.”

A small sad smile.

“Then I met you six months later.”

“So he never knew about us.”

“No.”

Miles searched archived files.

Within an hour, he found a recording from Richard’s office.

Adrian had inherited thousands of hours of corporate archives but rarely listened.

The audio was poor.

Richard Vale spoke first.

“The arrangement ends with me.”

Theodore Harrington answered.

“You don’t get to end it because you changed your mind.”

“My son will not be traded.”

“And the debt?”

“I’ll repay it.”

“You can’t.”

“I will.”

A third voice.

Mercer.

“Gentlemen, there are alternatives.”

The recording ended.

Adrian stared at the speaker.

His father had changed his mind.

For all his failures, Richard Vale had eventually tried to protect Adrian from the exact arrangement now threatening Rose.

Ariana squeezed his hand.

“Maybe he understood too late.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Seems to run in the family.”

The investigation expanded.

Federal agents raided two Harrington properties that afternoon.

Theodore still appeared on television denying wrongdoing.

Vanessa remained missing.

Then a message arrived from her.

Not to Adrian.

To Ariana.

I need to see you. Alone. I can prove what happened to Richard Vale.

Adrian immediately said no.

Ariana looked at him.

“She contacted me.”

“Which is exactly why you’re not going.”

“I’m not asking permission.”

“You were kidnapped yesterday.”

“Yes.”

“And now Vanessa wants you alone.”

“She also gave us the drive.”

“She helped cause this.”

“I know.”

“Ariana.”

She stood.

“Do you want the truth about your father?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop deciding which risks I am allowed to take.”

He looked at her.

The old Adrian wanted to order security around her.

The new Adrian forced himself to stop.

“What do you propose?”

“Public place.”

“Security nearby.”

“Not visible.”

“Tracker.”

She stared.

“On me?”

“On your phone.”

“Fine.”

“I’m coming close enough to reach you in thirty seconds.”

“Sixty.”

“Forty.”

Ariana almost smiled.

“Fifty.”

“Done.”

Vanessa chose a church.

Old.

Quiet.

Near Lincoln Park.

Ariana entered alone.

Vanessa sat in the last pew.

No makeup.

Hair pulled back.

She looked nothing like the woman who had stood on Vale House’s staircase.

Ariana sat two seats away.

“You have five minutes.”

Vanessa nodded.

“My father killed Richard Vale.”

Ariana stared at her.

“Proof?”

Vanessa handed her an envelope.

“Richard was going to expose the original agreement and repay the debt.”

“Why did your father care? He still had businesses of his own.”

“He was losing them.”

Ariana frowned.

“Harrington Capital was nearly bankrupt.”

“The public company wasn’t.”

“The private side was.”

Vanessa looked toward the altar.

“My father needed Vale.”

“And Richard stood in his way.”

“Yes.”

“What did Mercer do?”

“Changed his medication.”

Ariana went cold.

“Richard’s heart medicine?”

Vanessa nodded.

“My father paid Mercer to make the death look natural.”

Ariana looked at the envelope.

“Why tell me instead of Adrian?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because Adrian will look at me and see everything I did to you.”

“He should.”

“I know.”

For the first time, Vanessa sounded broken.

“I wanted your husband.”

She looked at Ariana.

“But I never wanted his father dead. I never wanted your baby taken.”

“You still helped them.”

“Yes.”

Ariana stood.

“Then live with that.”

She turned.

Vanessa caught her wrist.

“Ariana.”

She looked down.

Vanessa’s face had gone white.

“My father knows Rose is with Adrian.”

Ariana froze.

“How?”

“I heard him talking before I left.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did he say?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said Mercer failed because they kept trying to separate Adrian from the child.”

Ariana’s pulse jumped.

“And?”

Vanessa whispered, “My father said the only way to win now is to make Adrian choose between Rose and you.”

Outside, Adrian’s phone rang.

Miles.

“Adrian, we intercepted a Harrington communication.”

Adrian stood immediately.

“What?”

“Get Ariana out of there.”

“Why?”

“Because Theodore has another team in Chicago.”

Adrian looked toward the church doors.

May you like

Then heard the first gunshot.
