Chapter 13 - Ariana’s Impossible Choice

Ariana did not wake Adrian immediately.
For ten minutes she stood beside the window holding the photograph.
Then she looked at Rose.
Then at Adrian.
He slept badly.
Even unconscious, tension remained in his face.
A week earlier Ariana might have believed Adrian Vale incapable of fear.
Now she knew better.
He had simply spent his life disguising fear as control.
She placed the photograph on the table.
“Adrian.”
He woke instantly.
“What happened?”
His first look went to Rose.
“She’s fine.”
Then he saw Ariana’s face.
“What?”
She handed him the photograph.
Adrian stood.
“When did this come?”
“I just found it.”
He went to the window.
Nobody visible.
He called Miles.
Within fifteen minutes the apartment filled with security.
Adrian became colder with every minute.
“Someone reached the door.”
Miles nodded.
“Building camera shows a delivery courier.”
“Find him.”
“Already identified. College student. He was paid cash by a woman outside a coffee shop.”
“Description?”
“Probably fake intermediary.”
Adrian looked at the back of the photograph.
He cannot save both.
Ariana watched him.
“You know what it means.”
“Yes.”
“They’re going to use me against Rose.”
“Yes.”
“So I should leave.”
Adrian turned.
“No.”
“If I’m not with her—”
“No.”
“Listen.”
“No.”
Her eyebrows lifted.
“You were doing so well.”
He forced himself to inhale.
“Fine. I’m listening.”
“If Theodore wants to make you choose, we remove the choice.”
“How?”
“I go somewhere separate.”
“No.”
“You said you would listen.”
“I listened. The answer is no.”
Ariana crossed her arms.
“If they think Rose and I are together, one attack reaches both of us.”
“If you separate, I need two security operations.”
“Which you can afford.”
“This isn’t about money.”
“Then what?”
He stared at her.
“I can’t protect you if I can’t reach you.”
Ariana’s expression softened slightly.
“Adrian…”
“I already watched you disappear once.”
“That wasn’t your fault.”
“Everything leading to it was.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t get to make safety decisions from guilt.”
He looked at her.
That sentence ended the argument better than force could.
Miles spoke.
“Ariana may be right tactically.”
Adrian glared at him.
“Thank you, Miles.”
“Happy to ruin my morning.”
They designed the plan together.
Ariana would move to a federal safe location connected to the investigation into Mercer and Harrington.
Rose would remain separately protected.
Adrian would appear publicly at Vale House.
The idea made every instinct inside him rebel.
But Ariana was correct.
They could not defeat people who knew exactly where his emotional weaknesses were by behaving predictably.
Before leaving, Ariana packed one small bag.
It reminded Adrian of the night she left Vale House.
He stood near the bedroom door.
“This feels familiar.”
She looked at him.
“It isn’t.”
“No?”
“That night you wanted me to go.”
Pain crossed his face.
“And tonight?”
“I don’t.”
She zipped the bag.
Neither moved.
Then Rose made a sound from the living room.
Ariana walked past him.
At noon, federal agents arrived.
Adrian kissed Rose’s forehead.
Then handed her back to Ariana.
The goodbye felt unbearable.
“How long?” he asked.
“Forty-eight hours at first,” Miles said.
Ariana looked at Adrian.
“You’ll see her soon.”
He nodded.
Then Ariana stepped closer.
For a moment he thought she might kiss him.
Instead she wrapped her arms around him.
Adrian froze.
Then held her carefully.
Not tightly.
Not possessively.
Ariana rested her head against his chest.
“Come back to us,” he whispered.
She pulled away.
“You too.”
Then she left.
That afternoon Adrian held a press conference at Vale Tower.
He publicly acknowledged Rose as his daughter.
He produced certified DNA results.
He announced the removal of Charles Mercer from all Vale positions.
He disclosed the fraudulent birth-record alteration.
Then he did something nobody expected.
“I am also resigning temporarily as chief executive of Vale Holdings.”
Reporters erupted.
Adrian continued.
“My family has been endangered partly because decisions about human beings were treated as financial transactions.”
He looked directly into the cameras.
“I will not participate in that system while asking others to believe I intend to change it.”
Within minutes, markets reacted.
Vale stock fell.
Board members panicked.
Commentators called Adrian unstable.
Some praised him.
Others said Ariana had manipulated him.
He did not care.
Then a reporter shouted, “Mr. Vale, are you reconciling with your wife?”
Adrian stopped.
Every camera waited.
“My wife does not owe the public an answer about our marriage.”
The room quieted.
“I betrayed her trust. Whatever happens between us will happen privately and on her terms.”
Ariana watched the press conference from the safe location.
For the first time, Adrian protected her without claiming her.
She cried quietly.
That evening federal agents located Theodore Harrington.
Or thought they did.
A private plane registered to a Harrington subsidiary departed a small Indiana airport.
Authorities intercepted it after landing in Ohio.
Theodore was not aboard.
Only luggage.
A decoy.
At the same time, someone attacked the convoy believed to be carrying Rose.
Another decoy.
No baby aboard.
Adrian understood immediately.
“They’re testing us.”
Miles nodded.
“To find the real locations.”
“Did anyone follow?”
“Three vehicles attempted.”
“Then they know neither decoy had Rose.”
Miles’ face darkened.
“Probably.”
Adrian looked at the map.
“They’ll move tonight.”
Miles’ phone rang.
Federal agent.
Ariana’s safe location had been compromised.
Not attacked.
Compromised.
Someone had accessed the address through a federal contractor.
She was being relocated.
Adrian grabbed his coat.
Miles blocked him.
“You cannot go.”
“She’s moving.”
“Yes.”
“I need to know where.”
“No.”
Adrian stared.
Miles did not back down.
“If you know, someone can use you.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying Ariana is safer if even you don’t know.”
Adrian hated it.
Which meant Miles was right.
“Fine.”
He stayed.
At midnight, a message arrived from Ariana.
Safe. Rose?
Adrian answered.
Safe. I love you. No need to answer.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then nothing.
He placed the phone down.
At one in the morning, Vanessa called.
“I found my father.”
Adrian stood.
“Where?”
“He contacted me.”
“From where?”
“He wants a trade.”
“For what?”
“Me.”
Adrian frowned.
“He wants you?”
“No.”
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“He wants Ariana.”
Adrian became silent.
“Why?”
“Because Mercer lost control of the legal plan. My father thinks Ariana is the only person who can persuade you to withdraw the evidence.”
“That’s delusional.”
“He isn’t thinking clearly.”
“What does he want you to do?”
“Bring her to him.”
“You don’t know where she is.”
“I told him that.”
“And?”
Vanessa began crying.
“He said if I refuse, he’ll kill my mother.”
Adrian knew Vanessa’s mother had lived separately from Theodore for years.
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“Vanessa, listen to me.”
“I caused all of this.”
“You helped.”
“I know.”
“Then help end it.”
“How?”
“Meet me.”
Twenty minutes later, Vanessa entered Vale Tower under guard.
She handed Adrian a phone Theodore had sent.
One number.
One instruction.
Midnight tomorrow. Bring Ariana. No police.
Adrian read it.
Then another message appeared.
A live image.
A woman tied to a chair.
Vanessa’s mother.
And behind her stood Charles Mercer.
Alive.
Working with Theodore again.
Miles looked at Adrian.
“They’re together.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Good.”
Vanessa stared.
“Good?”
“For the first time, both men we need are in the same place.”
Miles understood.
“If we can trace the live feed…”
They began.
But Theodore had prepared for that.
The signal bounced around the world.
Untraceable in ordinary time.
Then Ariana called Adrian.
He answered immediately.
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Stay where you are.”
“What happened?”
“Nothing you need to handle.”
Ariana became suspicious.
“Adrian.”
He closed his eyes.
Old habits.
Protect by hiding information.
He forced himself to stop.
“Theodore has Vanessa’s mother.”
Silence.
“And he wants me.”
“Yes.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Find another solution.”
“What if there isn’t one?”
“There is.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know I’m not trading you.”
Ariana’s voice became very quiet.
“What if I agree?”
Adrian looked at Rose’s bracelet, now attached to a chain around his neck.
“No.”
“Adrian—”
“No.”
“Why?”
He answered without hesitation.
“Because loving you does not mean deciding your life is mine to sacrifice.”
Ariana went silent.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then she whispered, “That’s the man I was waiting for.”
The call ended.
Adrian stood motionless.
He did not know whether the words meant forgiveness.
But they meant something.
Then Miles shouted from across the room.
“I’ve got it.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“Theodore’s feed.”
“Location?”
Miles stared at the coordinates.
“An old Harrington hotel outside Chicago.”
Adrian grabbed his jacket.
But before they could move, another notification appeared.
The live camera changed.
Vanessa’s mother was no longer alone.
A second hostage had been dragged into the room.
Eleanor Vale.
Adrian’s mother.
Theodore had taken both families.
And now the message beneath the image contained only one sentence.
May you like
Tomorrow, Adrian chooses who his family is.
