Chapter 14 - The Price of Saving His Family

Adrian stared at the live image of Eleanor until the screen went black.
His mother had blood on her temple.
Vanessa’s mother was crying.
Mercer stood behind them.
Theodore remained out of frame.
Miles spoke first.
“We move now.”
“No.”
Everyone looked at Adrian.
The old Adrian would already have been in a car.
The new one forced himself to think.
“They expect us now.”
Miles nodded slowly.
“They want panic.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa stared at the dark screen.
“My mother is in there.”
“So is mine.”
“How are you this calm?”
“I’m not.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m terrified. That is why I’m not making decisions from terror.”
Ariana’s influence again.
Miles noticed.
For the next four hours they built a plan with federal tactical teams.
The old Harrington hotel had been closed for renovation.
Large property.
Multiple entrances.
Underground garage.
Service tunnels.
Theodore had selected it because his company still controlled security infrastructure.
What he did not know was that Vale Maritime had once considered purchasing the property.
Miles had old architectural plans.
At 4:30 a.m., Adrian received another message.
Bring Ariana at noon.
He answered.
I’ll come instead.
Reply:
You are not enough.
Adrian stared at the words.
Theodore did not want him.
He wanted leverage over him.
There was a difference.
Ariana called from the safe site.
“You’re planning something.”
“How do you know?”
“You haven’t texted me in two hours.”
He almost smiled.
“I’m working.”
“Your mother?”
“Alive as of four hours ago.”
“And Vanessa’s?”
“Same.”
“I want to help.”
“No.”
A pause.
Adrian sighed.
“I’m listening.”
“Good correction.”
“What do you propose?”
“I can appear in the car.”
“No.”
“Listen.”
He closed his eyes.
She continued.
“Theodore needs to believe I’m coming. If he doesn’t, he may move them before your team enters.”
“You’re not going inside.”
“I didn’t say I would.”
Adrian looked at Miles.
Miles was listening through the speaker.
Ariana explained.
A decoy approach.
Armored vehicle.
She would sit inside long enough for exterior surveillance to confirm her presence.
Then a vehicle switch would occur beneath an overpass before the final approach.
An agent resembling Ariana would continue.
Adrian hated every second.
Tactically, it was excellent.
Miles said, “It could work.”
Adrian glared.
“You two are enjoying this.”
Ariana almost laughed.
“No.”
At eleven thirty, the operation began.
Ariana entered the first vehicle.
Adrian sat beside her.
Rose remained miles away.
For twenty minutes, they traveled without speaking.
Then Ariana looked at him.
“You know what scares me?”
“What?”
“That this feels normal now.”
“It won’t forever.”
“You can’t promise that.”
“Yes, I can.”
She looked at him.
“When this ends, I’m leaving the empire.”
“What?”
“Not all ownership. Day-to-day control.”
“Why?”
“Because I spent half my life protecting something that nearly cost me the people I wanted to protect it for.”
Ariana stared.
“Don’t do that for me.”
“I’m not.”
He smiled slightly.
“I’m doing it because I want to know what Rose eats for breakfast when she’s five.”
Ariana’s eyes filled.
“I want school plays. Bad birthday cake. Saturday mornings.”
“You hate mornings.”
“I’ll adapt.”
She laughed.
Adrian took her hand.
“I want a life where my daughter doesn’t need an appointment to see me.”
Ariana looked down at their hands.
“And me?”
He swallowed.
“I want you in every version of that life.”
She closed her eyes.
“But if you don’t choose me, I’m still building it.”
Ariana turned toward the window.
Her tears fell quietly.
At the overpass, the switch occurred.
Ariana entered a protected federal vehicle and disappeared north.
Adrian continued toward the hotel with the decoy.
Theodore’s surveillance accepted the illusion.
At 12:03, Adrian’s SUV stopped outside the hotel.
He stepped out.
The decoy remained hidden.
A speaker activated.
“Send Ariana inside.”
Adrian looked toward the building.
“Theodore.”
“Send her.”
“Come out.”
“You’re not negotiating.”
“I usually am.”
“Today you’re a husband.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Yes.”
“That made you weak.”
“No.”
He looked directly toward the nearest camera.
“It made me understand what I’m willing to lose.”
Inside a surveillance room, Theodore watched him.
“What are you willing to lose, Adrian?”
“Everything you think matters.”
Theodore frowned.
“The company?”
“Yes.”
“Your wealth?”
“Yes.”
“Your name?”
“If necessary.”
Theodore laughed.
“You sound like your father before he died.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Federal teams moved through the service tunnels.
Miles counted seconds.
Adrian kept Theodore talking.
“My father tried to leave your agreement.”
“He was a coward.”
“He realized children are not contracts.”
“Children inherit contracts every day.”
“Not mine.”
Theodore’s voice hardened.
“Send Ariana.”
“No.”
A gunshot sounded inside.
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Then Theodore said, “That one hit the wall.”
Adrian’s hands trembled.
“Next one may not.”
Inside the basement, the tactical team reached the first door.
Miles whispered through Adrian’s earpiece.
“Thirty seconds.”
Adrian stared at the camera.
“You won’t kill Eleanor.”
“You sound certain.”
“You need Vale signatures.”
“I needed them.”
Past tense.
Adrian noticed.
“Needed?”
Theodore went silent.
Miles whispered.
“Ten seconds.”
Adrian continued.
“Mercer changed the plan, didn’t he?”
Still silence.
“He doesn’t need you anymore.”
Inside the hotel, Theodore turned toward Mercer.
A fraction of distrust.
Exactly what Adrian wanted.
Miles whispered, “Go.”
The power cut.
Teams entered.
Gunfire erupted inside.
Adrian ran toward the entrance despite orders.
Security moved with him.
The lobby filled with smoke.
He heard shouting.
Then Vanessa appeared from a side corridor.
Adrian stopped.
“What are you doing here?”
“I followed you.”
“You—”
“My mother is inside.”
He almost argued.
Then realized the irony.
He could not demand she behave differently from him.
“Stay behind security.”
They reached the ballroom.
Eleanor was being escorted out.
Alive.
Adrian grabbed her.
She held his face.
“I’m fine.”
“Vanessa’s mother?”
“Other side.”
Vanessa ran.
Another shot.
Mercer appeared above them on a balcony.
He held a gun.
Not toward Adrian.
Toward Vanessa.
“Your family ruined everything.”
Vanessa froze.
Mercer fired.
Adrian moved instinctively.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
He fell.
“A D R I A N!”
Ariana was not supposed to be there.
But her voice came from the lobby.
Adrian looked up through blurred vision.
She had returned.
And as security swarmed Mercer, Adrian understood that every careful plan had just changed.
Because Theodore Harrington was still missing.
May you like
And Ariana had walked directly into the one place Adrian had tried hardest to keep her away from.
