Chapter 12 - The Recording
At sixteen, Emily asked whether she could hear the 911 recording.
Sarah did not immediately answer.
They discussed it with Rebecca.
Eventually, under careful circumstances, Emily listened.
The child's voice coming through the speakers sounded impossibly young.
“Daddy's snake…”
Emily closed her eyes.
Claire's voice followed.
Calm.
Patient.
Present.
When the recording ended, Emily sat silently.
Sarah asked whether she regretted listening.
“No.”
“What are you thinking?”
Emily wiped her eyes.
“She sounds so little.”
Sarah reached for her hand.
“You were.”
Emily shook her head.
“She thought nobody was coming.”
“But somebody did.”
