THE CALL FROM MAPLEWOOD DRIVE / Chapter 15 / 19

Chapter 15 - A Different Kind of Call

Emily studied social work in college.

She did not choose the field because anyone expected her to.

Sarah repeatedly told her she was allowed to become an accountant, engineer, chef, musician, or anything else.

But Emily wanted to work with children.

Not because she believed she could rescue everyone.

She had learned enough to know better.

She wanted children to encounter adults who listened.

During an internship, Emily met a frightened ten-year-old who refused to speak.

Emily didn't pressure him.

She sat nearby.

Eventually the boy asked:

“Are you going to make me tell?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

“So you don't have to sit alone.”

The boy considered that.

Then he moved his chair slightly closer.

Emily understood.

Sometimes trust began with nothing more than someone staying.
