Chapter 9 - The Verdict

Weeks later, the case reached its conclusion.
The court found Thomas guilty on multiple charges related to his treatment and endangerment of Emily.
Sarah cried when she heard the decision.
Daniel closed his eyes.
María stared at the floor.
Claire learned through official channels later.
Emily was not in the courtroom.
Sarah told her that evening in language appropriate for a child.
“Daddy isn't coming back to this house.”
Emily looked at the blue door.
“Ever?”
“He can't come here.”
Emily sat quietly.
Sarah expected relief.
Instead Emily cried.
That surprised her.
Rebecca later explained that children could fear someone and still love them.
Those feelings did not cancel each other.
Emily wasn't required to hate her father in order for what happened to matter.
She wasn't required to celebrate his punishment.
She was allowed to grieve the father she had wanted him to be.
That night Sarah sat beside her until she fell asleep.

Charlie remained tucked beneath Emily's arm.
The bedroom door stayed open.
