Chapter 10 - The Second Betrayal

Thomas Keane had lied about one important detail.

He hadn't spent seven years trying to find Vanessa.

He had spent seven years communicating with her.

Prison emails uncovered by investigators revealed coded correspondence.

Thomas hated Vanessa.

But he hated Martin Vale more.

Martin had apparently arranged the scheme that sent Thomas to prison.

Vanessa later convinced Thomas they could destroy Martin together.

Then she disappeared again.

Their relationship was a knot of revenge, manipulation, and mutual betrayal.

Thomas had approached us not merely to help.

He wanted access to Martin.

Police located Thomas's car abandoned near the Hudson River.

No bodies.

No blood.

Just two phones on the front seat.

They had switched vehicles.

But Vanessa made another mistake.

She used one of the phones to send me a message before abandoning it.

YOUR MOTHER'S LETTER. MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE.

Daniel said absolutely not.

Dad said the same.

I agreed.

I wasn't going anywhere alone.

Instead, law enforcement controlled the response.

Vanessa named a railway warehouse outside the city.

Investigators prepared.

At 11:58 p.m., I wasn't inside the warehouse.

I was several blocks away in a secure vehicle.

Vanessa believed I had come.

An undercover officer carried an envelope.

Inside was a copy of my mother's letter.

Vanessa appeared at 12:07.

Thomas wasn't with her.

Police moved.

She ran.

The chase lasted less than three minutes.

Vanessa Vale—Natalie Voss—was arrested behind an abandoned loading building.

No glamorous escape.

No dramatic private jet.

No final victory.

Handcuffs.

Wet pavement.

Flashing lights.

Consequences.

When officers searched her coat, they found a key.

It belonged to a safety-deposit box.

Inside that box was the final financial ledger.

Every transfer.

Every shell company.

Every participant.

Graham.

Martin.

Vanessa.

And several executives from unrelated companies.

The evidence would take months to unravel.

But one name was absent.

Adrian Mercer.

For all his failures, he had apparently not knowingly participated in Vanessa's theft.

His crimes were different.

Recklessness.

Deception.

Possible financial violations.

And what he had done to me.

He would answer for those separately.

Vanessa had framed me.

But she hadn't forced Adrian's hand.

May you like

That belonged to him alone.

And I intended never to forget the difference.
