Chapter 15 - Adrian Mercer Starts Over

A year after our divorce, I saw Adrian unexpectedly.
A coffee shop.
No security.
No lawyers.
No Vanessa.
He was sitting alone near the window.
He saw me.
Neither of us moved.
Then he stood.
“Claire.”
“Adrian.”
He looked different.
Simpler clothes.
No luxury watch.
No practiced CEO posture.
“I heard Mercer Dynamics is doing well.”
“It is.”
He smiled faintly.
“Without Mercer.”
I didn't answer.
He looked down.
“I deserved that.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“That was worse.”
Despite myself, I almost smiled.
He asked if I had five minutes.
The irony wasn't lost on either of us.
We sat.
Adrian told me he had sold nearly everything.
Some assets covered legal obligations.
Some helped satisfy corporate claims.
He was consulting quietly for a small manufacturing company.
No executive title.
No private driver.
No magazine profiles.
“I used to think losing all that would kill me,” he said.
“Did it?”
“No.”
He looked through the window.
“Turns out the person I was while I had it was the thing killing me.”
I remained quiet.
Then he looked at me.
“I need to say something without asking you for anything.”
I waited.
“What Vanessa did to me doesn't excuse what I did to you.”
My throat tightened.
“I blamed her for months.”
He continued.
“She lied. She manipulated me. She framed you. But when I picked up that belt, that was me.”
I didn't rescue him from the sentence.
He needed to finish it.
“I did that.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
I nodded.
“Thank you for saying it correctly.”
He looked surprised.
“Correctly?”
“You apologized without asking me to erase the consequence.”
His eyes became wet.
“I finally understand.”
We finished our coffee.
When I stood, he didn't ask whether we could try again.
He didn't ask for my number.
He simply said, “Take care of yourself, Claire.”
“You too.”
Outside, I walked in one direction.
May you like
Adrian walked in another.
And somehow that felt like the right ending to our marriage.
