Chapter 17 - The Final Hearing

Nearly two years after the night in the penthouse, the major criminal proceedings connected to Vanessa's fraud reached resolution.

The courtroom was packed.

This time, I attended.

Not for revenge.

For closure.

Vanessa looked older.

So did I, probably.

But I felt stronger.

Evidence had documented years of fraud.

Multiple identities.

Shell companies.

Forged records.

Unauthorized access.

Manipulated financial transactions.

Her attorneys had negotiated certain matters while contesting others.

The judge spoke at length about consequences.

I didn't celebrate.

There was nothing joyful about watching a human being reach the end of years of destructive choices.

Vanessa turned toward me before she was escorted away.

For a moment, I saw the seventeen-year-old girl from the courthouse photograph.

Angry.

Lost.

Certain someone else had to pay for her father's mistakes.

Then she mouthed two words.

Your mother.

I couldn't hear the rest.

Maybe she said “was right.”

Maybe something else.

I never asked.

Some mysteries don't need answers.

Outside, cameras waited.

A reporter shouted:

“Claire! Do you feel like you won?”

I stopped.

Dad looked at me.

I answered carefully.

“This was never a competition.”

Another reporter called out.

“Then what is today?”

I looked back at the courthouse.

May you like

“An ending.”

Then I walked away.
