Chapter 3 - Eight O'Clock

At 7:58 the next morning, Adrian Mercer entered the boardroom believing he could still save himself.
I wasn't there.
But by noon, I knew almost every detail.
Daniel had representatives observing because Ellison Global remained a major prospective creditor and contractual partner.
Eleven directors sat around the polished walnut table.
Adrian arrived with Graham Pike.
Vanessa was missing.
That alone should have frightened him.
It did.
“Where is Ms. Vale?” the chairman asked.
Adrian claimed he didn't know.
Two minutes later, the meeting began.
The forensic report was distributed.
Forty-two pages.
Adrian reportedly read only three before throwing it onto the table.
“This is fabricated.”
The chairman asked whether his electronic signature had authorized three questionable vendor agreements.
Adrian admitted it had.
He claimed Vanessa prepared them.
Then Graham Pike spoke.
“I warned him.”
Adrian turned toward his CFO.
“What?”
Graham looked devastated.
According to Daniel, it was an excellent performance.
“I warned Adrian that Vanessa's consulting arrangements were irregular.”
“You approved them!”
“Because you ordered me to.”
Adrian stood.
“You lying—”
The chairman ordered him to sit.
Graham then produced emails showing Adrian instructing finance personnel to approve Vanessa's vendors without normal review.
Real emails.
Unlike the ones used against me.
Adrian had indeed bypassed controls.
Whether he knew about the theft remained uncertain.
But arrogance had given Vanessa everything she needed.
Access.
Authority.
Protection.
At 8:43, the board voted.
Adrian Mercer was suspended as CEO pending investigation.
He left the room shouting that Ellison had orchestrated everything.
He was wrong.
My father hadn't voted.
He didn't control Mercer Dynamics.
He had simply withdrawn support and handed investigators the information his own analysts had discovered.
Adrian had built the trap himself.
At 9:16, my temporary apartment buzzer rang.
Dad had moved me into one of Ellison Global's residential properties overnight.
Security checked the visitor.
It was Adrian.
I refused to let him upstairs.
He remained in the lobby for forty-three minutes.
Then he sent Daniel a message.
I KNOW WHO FRAMED CLAIRE.
That got my attention.
Daniel arranged a meeting in his office.
Public building.
Security present.
No private contact.
When I entered, Adrian was already sitting at the conference table.
He looked twenty years older.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His eyes were red.
No tie.
No confidence.
“Claire.”
I sat opposite him.
“Talk.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Privately.”
“No.”
“She's my wife.”
Daniel didn't react.
I did.
“Not an argument you should be using today.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“I deserved that.”
“You deserve considerably worse than sarcasm.”
He flinched.
Good.
“What do you know?”
Adrian placed a USB drive on the table.
“Vanessa has been stealing from Mercer.”
“How long?”
“Maybe eighteen months.”
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Then why should I believe you?”
“Because she stole from me too.”
I almost laughed.
There it was.
The tragedy became real to Adrian only after it reached his bank account.
He explained that several personal investment accounts were missing nearly six million dollars.
Vanessa had managed paperwork related to them.
“When did you discover this?”
“This morning.”
“And suddenly you believe she forged the evidence against me.”
He looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
I leaned forward.
“You watched her accuse me.”
“I know.”
“You believed her.”
“I know.”
“You didn't ask for an investigation.”
Silence.
“You didn't ask someone to inspect my computer.”
Silence.
“You didn't call your cybersecurity team.”
His eyes lowered.
“You picked up a belt.”
“I know.”
I stood.
“Then there is nothing else to discuss.”
“Claire, wait.”
I stopped.
Adrian pushed the USB drive toward me.
“She recorded things.”
“What things?”
“Meetings.”
“With you?”
“With everyone.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
Daniel picked up the drive using a tissue and placed it into an evidence bag.
Adrian continued.
“I found a hidden backup folder on one of our internal servers. Vanessa recorded conversations with executives, vendors, politicians, investors—anyone she thought she could use later.”
I looked at him.
“And you?”
His silence answered.
“What did you say on those recordings?”
“Things taken out of context.”
Of course.
Daniel almost smiled.
I didn't.
“Anything illegal?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
I sat again.
“Adrian.”
He rubbed both hands across his face.
“One conversation could sound bad.”
“How bad?”
“I told Graham to move money temporarily.”
“How much?”
“Eight million.”
“Where?”
“An acquisition account.”
“Why?”
“We were going to miss payroll.”
My stomach tightened.
“You moved restricted acquisition funds to cover operations?”
“Temporarily.”
“That can violate lending covenants.”
“I put it back.”
“When?”
He didn't answer.
“Adrian.”
“After Ellison's preliminary financing commitment.”
I stared at him.
He had used the expectation of my father's money to hide an earlier hole.
Dad had been right.
Mercer Dynamics wasn't collapsing because of Vanessa alone.
Vanessa was a predator.
But Adrian had opened the door.
Daniel asked, “Who knew about the transfer?”
“Graham.”
“Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“Anyone else?”
“No.”
Daniel looked toward me.
Three people.
Adrian.
Graham.
Vanessa.
And each was blaming the others.
Then Adrian said something unexpected.
“Vanessa isn't her real name.”
I stared.
“What?”
“I discovered it this morning.”
He slid a photograph across the table.
The woman looked younger.
Different hair.
Same eyes.
Underneath was a name.
Natalie Voss.
Daniel frowned.
“Who is Natalie Voss?”
Adrian answered.
“Seven years ago, she worked at another technology company.”
“What happened?”
“She was investigated after $9 million disappeared.”
“Charged?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“The CFO took responsibility.”
I felt something cold crawl across my skin.
“What happened to him?”
Adrian hesitated.
“He went to prison.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Disappeared.”
Daniel immediately began making calls.
I looked at the photograph.
A younger Vanessa smiled back at me.
Adrian whispered, “Claire, she targeted me.”
I looked up.
“And you targeted me.”
He stopped.
“Don't confuse those things.”
“I’m not.”
“You chose what you did.”
His face collapsed.
“I know.”
For once, I believed him.
Not because he had changed.
Because he had finally run out of excuses.
Daniel returned.
“We've confirmed the identity.”
“Vanessa is Natalie?”
“Yes.”
“And the previous company?”
“Real.”
“What about the CFO?”
Daniel looked troubled.
“He was released eighteen months ago.”
“Where is he now?”
“No one knows.”
Adrian stood.
“This proves Vanessa did everything.”
“No,” Daniel said. “It proves she lied about her identity.”
Then his phone rang.
He listened.
His expression changed.
“Where?”
Another pause.
“When?”
He ended the call.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Vanessa's apartment is empty.”
Adrian stared.
“She ran?”
“Looks that way.”
Daniel looked at me.
“But she left something behind.”
“What?”
“A safe.”
Adrian immediately said, “She never told me about a safe.”
Daniel ignored him.
“Investigators opened it.”
“And?”
He took a breath.
“Inside were passports, cash, encrypted drives, and photographs.”
“What photographs?”
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Mostly you.”
I stopped breathing.
“There were photographs of you going back three years.”
Three years.
I had known Vanessa for only eighteen months.
Which meant Vanessa Vale had been watching me before Adrian ever claimed to have met her.
The room suddenly felt much colder.
Adrian whispered, “Why would she be following Claire?”
Daniel didn't answer.
But I knew one thing.
Vanessa hadn't entered Adrian's life because she wanted him.
May you like
She had entered his life because she wanted access to me.
And whatever this story was really about, it had started long before my husband ever brought his mistress home.
