Chapter 13 - A Mother’s Secret

Emily Mercer was forty-one.

She had Daniel's eyes.

Sarah saw that immediately.

She stood in Gabriel's townhouse living room with both hands wrapped around a coffee mug.

Lucy sat beside Adrian upstairs, still unaware that her father waited only a floor below.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

Emily looked up.

For nearly fifteen seconds neither sibling moved.

Then she stood.

"You look old."

Daniel laughed once.

"So do you."

She crossed the room and hugged him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Sarah watched from several feet away.

There was grief in the embrace.

Not fresh grief.

The kind accumulated over years.

When they separated, Daniel said:

"I thought you were dead."

Emily nodded.

"I know."

"Victor?"

"Partly."

Daniel looked toward Reynolds.

"You knew?"

Reynolds shook his head.

"Not until three months ago."

Emily turned toward Sarah.

"You must be Sarah."

Sarah almost laughed.

Apparently everyone knew her.

"Apparently."

Emily's eyes softened.

"And Lucy?"

"Upstairs."

Emily started crying.

Daniel looked away.

Sarah suddenly understood.

Emily wasn't another criminal player.

She was another person who had lost years.

"What happened to you?" Daniel asked.

Emily sat.

"When Mom died, I got into trouble."

Daniel nodded.

He knew that part.

"Victor helped me."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Helped?"

"I thought he did."

Emily explained.

At nineteen, she'd accumulated debts.

Victor arranged work.

Housing.

Protection.

Then turned every favor into obligation.

When Daniel began asking questions, Victor threatened Emily.

So she disappeared willingly.

"I thought if you believed I was dead, he'd have nothing to use."

Daniel stared.

"You did the same thing I did."

Emily smiled sadly.

"We're Mercers."

Sarah muttered, "Unfortunately."

Daniel heard.

He deserved it.

Emily continued.

Years later, she learned Daniel was alive after the warehouse fire.

But Victor kept them separated.

Each believed reconnecting would endanger the other.

Sarah listened with growing anger.

"So everyone spent a decade protecting everyone by never speaking to anyone."

Nobody answered.

"Excellent strategy."

Gabriel almost smiled.

Emily looked toward Sarah.

"You're angry."

"I'm surrounded by people who think lying is affection."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Emily nodded.

"Then you're probably the smartest person here."

Sarah liked her slightly more.

Gabriel asked, "Why now?"

Emily's expression became serious.

"Because someone is looking for Lucy."

Sarah stood.

"Who?"

"I don't know his name."

"Try harder."

Emily didn't flinch.

"A man contacted me three months ago. Asked whether Daniel had a daughter."

Daniel's face darkened.

"What did you say?"

"Nothing."

"Description?"

"About fifty. Brown hair. Scar near his ear."

Reynolds went still.

Gabriel noticed.

"You know him."

Reynolds nodded slowly.

"Marcus Shaw."

Daniel's face changed.

Sarah asked, "Who?"

Gabriel answered.

"My father's former attorney."

Antonio, who had arrived quietly minutes earlier, spoke from the doorway.

"Not just mine."

Everyone turned.

He walked in.

"Marcus designed the legal structure behind Victor's network."

Daniel stood.

"You told me he died."

Antonio looked ashamed.

"I believed he had."

Sarah laughed.

"Can we officially stop assuming anyone is dead?"

No one disagreed.

Antonio sat opposite Emily.

"Marcus didn't care about Victor's leverage."

"What did he care about?" Gabriel asked.

"Ownership."

Antonio looked toward the blue box.

"If Victor controlled people through secrets, Marcus controlled the companies built around those secrets."

Gabriel understood.

"The hidden holdings."

"Yes."

Daniel looked toward Gabriel's inheritance documents.

"He's after the money."

Antonio nodded.

Sarah frowned.

"Why Lucy?"

Everyone went quiet.

Daniel's face changed.

"Because of me."

Sarah stared.

"What did you do?"

Daniel looked sick.

"After my accident, I moved some of the Mercer evidence into a trust structure."

"Speak English."

"Access requires two family signatures."

Sarah's heart sank.

"Yours and Lucy's?"

"No."

Daniel looked toward his sister.

"Mine and Emily's."

Emily shook her head.

"I never signed anything."

"You don't need to unless I'm dead."

Sarah stared at him.

"Daniel."

He continued.

"If I die, access transfers to my legal heir."

Sarah whispered.

"Lucy."

Daniel nodded.

The room turned cold.

Gabriel said, "Marcus thinks killing Daniel gives Lucy access."

"No."

Antonio's expression darkened.

"Marcus doesn't need Daniel dead."

Daniel looked at him.

"He needs everyone to believe he is."

Sarah's hands clenched.

"Again?"

Antonio nodded.

"If Marcus can legally establish Daniel's death and gain control of Lucy's guardianship—"

"Absolutely not."

Sarah's voice cut through the room.

Daniel looked at her.

Antonio continued carefully.

"He could theoretically force access through the trust."

Sarah stood.

"No one is getting anywhere near my daughter."

Gabriel said, "They won't."

She turned on him.

"Stop promising things you can't guarantee."

He accepted it.

Daniel moved closer.

"Sarah."

"No."

"You and Lucy should leave Philadelphia."

"No."

"Please."

She stared at him.

"Five years ago, you made that decision without me."

Daniel stopped.

"You don't get to do it again."

He closed his mouth.

"We stay together," Sarah said.

"All of us."

Gabriel nodded.

Antonio looked toward her.

"That's dangerous."

Sarah laughed.

"Look around this room."

Gabriel.

Daniel.

Antonio.

Reynolds.

Emily.

"A supposedly dead father, supposedly dead husband, supposedly dead sister, a former mafia boss, and a restaurant owner who lies professionally."

Reynolds looked offended.

"That feels unfair."

"It's accurate."

Emily smiled.

Sarah continued.

"The safest place for Lucy might actually be in the middle of this disaster because at least now nobody is hiding."

She looked at Daniel.

"Right?"

"Right."

"No more secrets."

Daniel nodded.

"None."

Sarah pointed toward the ceiling.

"Then you're telling her."

Daniel went pale.

"Now?"

"Yes."

"I thought you said not like this."

"I said not before I heard everything."

She looked at him.

"I've heard enough."

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

He had faced Victor.

Antonio.

Men who wanted him dead.

Nothing seemed to frighten him like climbing those stairs.

Sarah saw it.

Good.

He should be afraid.

Love deserved courage too.

Lucy sat on the bedroom floor playing cards with Adrian.

When Daniel appeared in the doorway, she looked up.

Her face went blank.

The card fell from her hand.

Daniel couldn't speak.

Lucy stared.

"Daddy?"

Sarah started crying.

Daniel knelt.

"Hi, little star."

Lucy didn't move.

Daniel opened his arms.

She ran.

The impact nearly knocked him backward.

Lucy wrapped both arms around his neck.

Daniel buried his face in her hair and sobbed.

Not quietly.

Not with restraint.

Five years came out of him at once.

Lucy cried too.

"You came back."

"I'm sorry."

"You were gone."

"I know."

"Mama said you went to heaven."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Your mama believed that."

Lucy pulled back.

"Were you?"

"No."

"Then where were you?"

Daniel looked at Sarah.

Sarah didn't rescue him.

"Far away."

"Why?"

"Because I made mistakes."

Lucy studied him with the brutal simplicity of children.

"Are you staying?"

Daniel looked at Sarah.

She said nothing.

This answer was his.

"If your mom lets me."

Lucy looked at Sarah.

"Mama?"

Sarah wiped her face.

"He's not disappearing again."

Daniel nodded.

"Never."

Lucy hugged him.

Then whispered:

"Good. Because Mama burns toast."

Sarah stared.

"I do not."

"You do."

Daniel laughed.

It was the first sound of genuine happiness Sarah had heard from him.

Then Adrian's phone vibrated.

He checked it.

The happiness vanished from his face.

"Gabriel."

Gabriel stepped into the room.

"What?"

"Marcus Shaw just filed an emergency petition."

Sarah frowned.

"For what?"

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"To have Daniel Mercer legally declared alive."

Everyone stared.

That made no sense.

Then Adrian continued.

"And at the same time, he's filed a petition claiming Sarah is financially unfit to control Lucy's inherited trust."

Sarah's face went pale.

Daniel stood.

"He's trying to separate them."

Gabriel nodded.

"And he's using Daniel's return to do it."

May you like

Because Marcus Shaw had just transformed their miracle into a weapon.
