Chapter 15 - The Man Who Betrayed Them All

The old apartment had changed owners twice.

A young couple lived there now with a baby.

Sarah hated involving them.

Gabriel hated arriving without advance warning.

Daniel hated everything about returning.

The building stood on a quiet street in Manayunk.

Sarah stared up at the second-floor windows.

"We were happy here."

Daniel looked at her.

"I know."

"Don't say that."

He nodded.

"Sorry."

The current owners had already been contacted through Gabriel's attorneys.

They agreed to stay elsewhere for the evening.

Inside, almost nothing looked familiar.

Different furniture.

Different paint.

Different life.

Lucy stood in what had once been her nursery.

The blue wall was now pale gray.

She touched it.

"Daddy painted stars."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"I did."

"You missed one."

She pointed near the baseboard.

A tiny blue star remained beneath a radiator.

Sarah's throat tightened.

Daniel crouched.

"Past the books and under blue."

There had once been a built-in bookshelf beside the star.

Removed during renovation.

Gabriel tapped the wall.

Solid.

Daniel examined the floorboards.

One sounded hollow.

He lifted it.

Nothing.

Sarah noticed the radiator.

"Under blue."

Daniel looked.

The old blue paint remained behind it.

They removed the radiator cover.

A narrow metal tube had been taped inside.

Daniel stared.

"I don't remember putting this here."

Sarah froze.

"Then who did?"

He opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a note.

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

Reynolds.

D,

You were right not to trust me.

But you were wrong to think I couldn't change.

If I don't get the chance to tell you myself, give this to Gabriel.

T.

Gabriel stared.

"Reynolds hid this."

Daniel inserted the drive into an offline laptop.

One video.

Thomas Reynolds appeared on screen.

Younger.

Terrified.

"If you're watching this, Marcus knows."

Everyone went silent.

Reynolds's recorded image continued.

"I worked for Victor. Then Antonio. Then Gabriel. Then Daniel."

A bitter laugh.

"Truth is, I worked for myself."

The real Reynolds stood at the back of the room.

His face had gone pale.

Sarah looked toward him.

"You knew this was here."

"No."

"That's you."

"I recorded it."

"But?"

"I thought Marcus destroyed it."

The video continued.

"I sold Daniel's location after the warehouse fire."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I told Victor where he was."

Sarah looked at Reynolds.

He lowered his eyes.

"I also told Daniel Gabriel betrayed him."

Gabriel said nothing.

He already knew.

"But the worst thing I did came later."

Reynolds on-screen began crying.

"I told Marcus about Sarah."

Daniel stood.

The room turned cold.

Sarah looked at the real Reynolds.

"You."

He nodded.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel stepped toward him.

Gabriel blocked his path.

"Move."

"No."

"He gave Marcus my family."

"Five years ago."

"I don't care."

Sarah stepped between them.

"Daniel."

"Sarah—"

"No."

He looked at her.

"This is my betrayal too."

Reynolds couldn't meet her eyes.

"Why?" Sarah asked.

"Money."

Victor had been right.

The boring answer.

Reynolds whispered:

"I owed people."

"For what?"

"Gambling."

Sarah almost laughed at the smallness of it.

Years of suffering.

Because one man couldn't control his gambling.

"I thought Marcus only wanted leverage against Daniel."

"You thought threatening a man's wife and child was acceptable leverage?"

"No."

"But you took the money."

"Yes."

Daniel's voice shook.

"How much?"

Reynolds told him.

Less than the cost of one luxury car.

Sarah stared.

Five years.

Daniel's disappearance.

Lucy's childhood without a father.

For that amount.

Reynolds wiped his eyes.

"I spent every day afterward trying to undo it."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You can't."

"I know."

The video continued.

"Marcus isn't after the Mercer file."

Everyone turned back.

"He wants Antonio's hidden accounts."

Gabriel frowned.

"We know."

"No," the recorded Reynolds said.

"You don't."

The video showed a document.

Account structure.

Transfer conditions.

Antonio's money didn't belong entirely to Gabriel.

A portion had been placed into restitution trusts.

For families harmed by the Vale organization.

Marcus couldn't access those accounts without destroying the trust protections.

Unless he obtained original blackmail files proving beneficiaries had connections to illegal activity.

Sarah understood.

"He needs the file to invalidate their claims."

Gabriel nodded.

"And take the money."

The recording continued.

"The drive hidden in Lucy's room contains the master index connecting Marcus to every shell company."

Daniel stared.

Not blackmail.

Evidence.

Enough to destroy Marcus financially.

Gabriel looked toward Reynolds.

"You hid the thing that could bring him down."

"Yes."

"Why here?"

Reynolds looked at Lucy.

"Because nobody knew Daniel had a family yet except me."

Daniel's anger shifted.

Not forgiveness.

But complexity.

Reynolds had betrayed them.

Then used the same secret to protect evidence.

Sarah hated that real people refused to stay villains or heroes.

"You've known this existed all along?" Gabriel asked.

"I knew I hid it."

"Why not tell us earlier?"

Reynolds laughed sadly.

"Because I couldn't remember where."

Sarah stared.

"Seriously?"

"I was drinking heavily then."

Daniel covered his face.

"Unbelievable."

Lucy tugged his sleeve.

"Daddy?"

Daniel looked down.

"Why is everyone mad?"

He crouched.

"Because grown-ups make complicated mistakes."

"Did Mr. Reynolds make one?"

The room went quiet.

Reynolds's eyes filled.

Daniel looked at him.

Then back at Lucy.

"Yes."

"Did he say sorry?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

Lucy thought.

"Then he has to do better."

Sarah closed her eyes.

Of course a seven-year-old would reduce decades of moral complexity to the only part that mattered.

Do better.

Reynolds began crying.

Daniel stood.

"I'm not forgiving you."

"I know."

"But she's right."

Reynolds looked up.

Daniel handed him the drive.

"You help us finish this."

Reynolds took it.

"And after?"

Daniel's eyes were hard.

"After, you tell Agent Carter everything."

Reynolds nodded.

"Even if I go to prison?"

"Especially then."

Reynolds closed his hand around the drive.

"Okay."

Gabriel called Carter.

She agreed to meet at Laurel & Vine the following night.

Everything would end at Table Eleven.

Where Daniel and Gabriel had begun.

Where Sarah and Lucy had walked in hungry.

Where Reynolds had watched silently from the bar.

Where all of them would finally decide whether truth meant revenge or accountability.

But as they prepared to leave the apartment, Sarah noticed Lucy standing near the window.

"Sweetheart?"

Lucy pointed outside.

A black car sat across the street.

Daniel looked.

The driver stepped out.

Marcus Shaw.

He didn't run.

Didn't hide.

He simply looked up at the window.

Then held up his phone.

Sarah's rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Marcus's voice.

"Congratulations."

Sarah stared at him through the glass.

"You found the index."

Her hand tightened.

"What do you want?"

"Table Eleven."

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

Sarah looked toward Gabriel.

Marcus continued.

"Everyone."

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because it's time Daniel Mercer learned the truth about why he survived that accident."

Sarah felt Daniel move beside her.

Marcus looked directly up at him.

Then said:

"Thomas Reynolds wasn't the only man who betrayed Daniel that night."

The line ended.

May you like

And for once, nobody in the room knew whose secret remained.
