Chapter 14 - Daniel’s Final Recording

Marcus Shaw moved quickly.
Too quickly.
By the next morning, journalists had somehow learned Daniel Mercer was alive.
A man legally declared dead five years earlier returning to Philadelphia was irresistible.
Local television parked outside Sarah's apartment.
Reporters called Laurel & Vine.
Internet headlines appeared.
DEAD MAN RETURNS AFTER FIVE YEARS.
WIDOW KNEW NOTHING.
MYSTERY MILLIONS LINKED TO FORMER VALE ASSOCIATE.
Sarah threw her phone onto the sofa.
"This is exactly what he wanted."
Gabriel nodded.
"Noise."
Daniel paced.
"And court scrutiny."
Emily sat beside Lucy, helping her with homework as though nothing strange were happening.
Sarah admired her for it.
"What does Marcus gain if everyone knows Daniel is alive?"
Antonio answered.
"Control over the narrative."
Daniel looked at him.
"He'll claim I abandoned my family."
"He doesn't need to claim it," Sarah said.
Daniel stopped.
She sighed.
"I'm sorry."
"No. You're right."
Gabriel leaned over the table.
"Marcus wants Daniel discredited and Sarah portrayed as unstable or financially irresponsible."
Sarah laughed.
"I am financially irresponsible because I was poor?"
"That's how he'll frame it."
"Wonderful."
Daniel sat beside her.
"We need evidence showing why I disappeared."
Gabriel nodded.
"Federal investigation records."
"Which don't exist officially."
Reynolds looked up.
"The final recording."
Everyone turned.
"What final recording?" Daniel asked.
Reynolds frowned.
"The one you gave me."
"I didn't."
"Yes, you did."
"When?"
"Four years ago."
Daniel stared.
"I didn't see you four years ago."
Reynolds went pale.
Gabriel noticed first.
"Then who did?"
Reynolds stood.
"A man came to the restaurant."
"Description."
"Baseball cap. Beard."
"Face?"
"I thought it was Daniel."
Daniel shook his head.
"What did he give you?"
"A cassette."
"Where?"
Reynolds looked toward Table Eleven.
"I hid it."
They drove to Laurel & Vine.
Reynolds removed the seat cushion from Daniel's old chair.
Inside a hidden compartment sat a small cassette.
Daniel stared.
"That's not mine."
Gabriel examined the label.
FINAL.
Sarah asked, "Play it."
Reynolds brought the recorder from the office.
Static.
Then a man's voice.
Not Daniel.
Marcus Shaw.
"If you're hearing this, Gabriel Vale is already making the same mistake his father made."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
Marcus continued.
"Antonio believed crimes disappear when good men inherit dirty money."
Antonio looked down.
"Gabriel believes giving that money away makes him clean."
Gabriel said nothing.
"Daniel Mercer believes protecting his family excuses abandoning them."
Sarah's jaw clenched.
"And Sarah Mercer believes love makes her entitled to answers no one owes her."
Sarah laughed.
"I already hate him."
Marcus continued.
"Every one of you confuses intention with innocence."
Daniel leaned closer.
"What's the point?"
Marcus answered from the recording as though he'd heard.
"The point is simple."
A pause.
"The Mercer file belongs to me."
Antonio whispered, "There."
Marcus continued.
"I designed the system Daniel stole."
Gabriel looked at Antonio.
"You said Victor designed it."
"Victor collected information."
Antonio's face tightened.
"Marcus organized it."
The recording continued.
"Give me the file, and the legal actions against Sarah disappear."
Sarah stood.
"No."
"Give me the trust access, and Daniel's resurrection remains a private scandal rather than a criminal investigation."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Refuse, and every secret in the Mercer file becomes public."
Everyone went still.
Victor's old leverage.
Affairs.
Addictions.
Victims.
People who helped others escape.
Innocent families.
Marcus wasn't threatening them.
He was threatening hundreds of strangers.
Daniel whispered, "That's why he wants it."
Gabriel said, "Insurance."
Marcus continued.
"You have seventy-two hours."
Then another voice entered the recording.
Sarah froze.
A little girl.
Not Lucy.
Older recording.
A child crying.
Daniel stood.
"Who is that?"
Emily went pale.
She knew.
"Me."
Everyone turned.
Emily stared at the recorder.
Marcus had recorded her decades ago when Victor first controlled her.
Her own frightened teenage voice.
Daniel's hands began shaking.
Marcus continued.
"Daniel, you spent your life trying to save everyone."
A pause.
"Let's see whom you choose this time."
The tape ended.
Emily wiped her eyes.
"He's sick."
Daniel looked murderous.
Sarah grabbed his hand.
"No."
He looked at her.
She understood exactly what he was thinking.
"Daniel."
"He used my sister."
"Years ago."
"He still has recordings."
"And he wants you angry."
Gabriel watched Sarah calm the man who had disappeared for five years.
There was irony in that.
She turned toward him.
"What does Marcus expect Daniel to do?"
"Trade the file."
"So we don't."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"If Marcus releases personal information, people get destroyed."
Sarah looked at the laptop.
"What if there is no file to trade?"
Everyone stared.
Daniel shook his head.
"You can't just delete it."
"Why?"
"Backups."
"Where?"
Daniel hesitated.
Sarah raised an eyebrow.
"No more secrets."
He sighed.
"Three encrypted servers."
"Can you delete them?"
"Yes."
"Then delete everything except actual criminal evidence."
Daniel stared.
"I've spent five years trying to do that."
Sarah looked at the blue box.
"Because you've been doing it alone."
The room went silent.
She continued.
"Look at this ridiculous group."
Gabriel.
Antonio.
Reynolds.
Emily.
Daniel.
"Everybody here knows part of the system."
Gabriel understood.
"Divide the data."
Sarah nodded.
"Review it."
Emily added, "Remove anything involving victims."
Reynolds said, "Preserve proof of crimes."
Antonio looked toward Gabriel.
"Give Carter only what can prosecute the people still operating."
Daniel stared at Sarah.
"You just solved the problem."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I suggested something obvious while five dramatic men stood around acting mysterious."
Emily laughed.
"Welcome to the family."
Sarah almost smiled.
For forty-eight hours, they worked.
Laurel & Vine closed "for maintenance."
Behind locked doors, the strangest team in Philadelphia dismantled the Mercer file.
Gabriel identified companies.
Antonio explained old structures.
Reynolds traced payments.
Emily identified victims.
Daniel separated evidence.
Sarah asked the questions everyone else had been too close to the story to ask.
By the second night, hundreds of personal files had been permanently erased.
What remained was smaller.
Cleaner.
Criminal.
Enough to bring Marcus down without destroying his victims.
Daniel leaned back.
"Done."
Gabriel looked at the drive.
"Call Carter."
Before anyone moved, the restaurant phone rang.
Reynolds answered.
Listened.
His face changed.
"Who is it?" Gabriel asked.
Reynolds handed the phone to Daniel.
Daniel lifted it.
"Hello?"
Marcus.
Even from across the table, Sarah could hear his voice faintly.
"You always were predictable."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"What do you want?"
"You missed something."
"What?"
Marcus laughed.
"Ask your daughter."
Daniel went still.
Sarah grabbed the phone.
"What does Lucy have to do with this?"
Marcus replied:
"She remembers where Daniel hid the only file that matters."
Sarah's blood ran cold.
"The song."
Marcus continued.
"Past the books and under blue."
Then the line went dead.
Daniel stood.
Sarah already knew.
Their old apartment.
The blue nursery wall.
The place they'd planned to search before everything else happened.
The real file wasn't in a trust.
It wasn't on Daniel's servers.
It was inside the home where Lucy had spent the first two years of her life.
May you like
And Marcus Shaw had just reminded them that he knew exactly where to look.
