Chapter 9 - The Night Daniel Disappeared

Victor Hale entered the warehouse alone.

That frightened Gabriel more than if he'd brought twenty men.

Men with armies wanted to intimidate.

Men who came alone believed they'd already won.

Victor was older than the photograph in locker 311.

His blond hair had faded almost white.

His expensive dark coat was buttoned to the throat.

He looked like a banker arriving for a meeting.

Not a man who had haunted Daniel Mercer's life for almost a decade.

"Antonio."

Victor smiled.

"You aged."

Antonio didn't.

"You didn't."

Victor looked toward Gabriel.

"And the prodigal son."

Gabriel said nothing.

Then Victor's attention settled on Sarah.

His expression softened.

"Mrs. Mercer."

Sarah felt Gabriel shift slightly in front of her.

Victor noticed.

"Still protecting other men's families, Gabriel?"

"Why are you here?"

Victor sighed.

"Always impatient."

Antonio stepped forward.

"The file is gone."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Then why did you come back?"

Antonio said nothing.

Victor looked at the coin in Gabriel's hand.

There.

For one instant.

Recognition.

Gabriel closed his fist.

Victor laughed.

"Daniel was clever."

Sarah spoke before anyone could stop her.

"Where is my husband?"

Victor looked at her.

"You still think I'm the villain."

"Aren't you?"

"Depends who wrote the story."

Gabriel's voice hardened.

"Answer her."

Victor walked slowly across the warehouse.

"I didn't kill Daniel."

Sarah almost screamed.

"I'm tired of hearing that."

"You should be."

Victor looked at Antonio.

"Everyone keeps telling you what they didn't do."

Sarah stepped forward.

"Then tell me what you did."

Victor studied her.

"I found Daniel after the warehouse fire."

"I know."

"I told him Gabriel betrayed him."

"I know."

"He believed me."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

Victor smiled at him.

"For longer than you're comfortable admitting."

Sarah ignored the men.

"Then?"

"Daniel disappeared."

"He met me."

"Yes."

Victor's smile faded.

"That was my mistake."

"What was?"

"Underestimating what a man becomes once he has someone to protect."

Sarah looked toward the old piano in the upstairs office.

Lucy had been here.

Daniel had carried her through these doors.

"What did you want from him?"

"The same thing everyone wanted."

"The file?"

Victor shook his head.

"Control."

Sarah frowned.

"Daniel couldn't be bought. Couldn't be frightened. Couldn't be tempted."

Victor's eyes almost admired him.

"Then he met you."

Sarah felt sick.

"I thought love would make him weak."

Victor looked toward Antonio.

"It made him impossible."

Gabriel asked, "The accident."

Victor's expression changed.

"Wasn't mine."

Antonio stepped forward.

"You're lying."

"I'm many things, Antonio. But I didn't send that truck off the road."

Sarah looked between them.

"Who did?"

Victor smiled sadly.

"Daniel."

Silence.

Sarah stared.

"No."

"He caused the crash."

"No."

"Not deliberately."

Victor looked at her.

"He was being followed. He lost control."

Antonio said, "Your men were following him."

"One man."

"Who?"

Victor didn't answer.

Gabriel's voice sharpened.

"Who?"

Victor looked toward him.

"Reynolds."

Sarah stared.

"No."

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"Thomas Reynolds?"

Victor nodded.

"He wasn't protecting Daniel that night."

Antonio stepped closer.

"You're lying."

"Ask him."

"Why would Reynolds follow Daniel?"

"Because Daniel had discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

Victor looked directly at Gabriel.

"That the man who betrayed him after the warehouse fire wasn't me."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

"You told him I betrayed him."

"I repeated what I was told."

"By who?"

Victor smiled.

"Thomas Reynolds."

The room seemed to tilt.

Sarah shook her head.

"But Daniel trusted Reynolds."

"For years."

"So why would Reynolds—"

"Because Thomas had been playing every side."

Victor looked almost amused.

"Gabriel's father. Gabriel. Me. Daniel."

Antonio whispered, "No."

Victor turned toward him.

"You think you're the only man who wanted a new life?"

Antonio's face darkened.

"Reynolds wanted freedom too."

"Then why betray Daniel?"

"Money."

Sarah stared.

Victor shrugged.

"Sometimes the boring answer is the correct one."

Gabriel remembered Reynolds's hospital bed.

His warnings.

His carefully incomplete answers.

"Where is Reynolds now?"

Victor smiled.

"You tell me."

"He was attacked."

"So he says."

Gabriel's stomach dropped.

Sarah whispered, "He staged it."

Victor tilted his head.

"Did he?"

Gabriel hated the uncertainty.

Victor continued.

"After the accident, Daniel survived. Antonio pulled him out. Reynolds found out before I did."

Sarah's hands clenched.

"What happened next?"

"Daniel disappeared from the hospital."

"Because Reynolds helped him?"

Victor nodded.

"But not out of kindness."

Sarah's eyes filled.

"What did Reynolds want?"

"The Mercer file."

"Everyone wants that file."

"No."

Victor's expression turned serious.

"Everyone is afraid of it."

Gabriel looked toward the coin.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel documented more than crimes."

Victor paused.

"He documented who had secretly helped people escape them."

Antonio's face changed.

Gabriel noticed.

Victor smiled.

"Yes, Antonio."

Sarah looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Victor answered.

"Judges who quietly dismissed manufactured charges. Police officers who warned families. Business owners who gave people jobs under new names. Doctors who hid injured men."

Sarah began understanding.

"The file could expose innocent people too."

"Exactly."

Victor nodded.

"Daniel realized publishing it would destroy everyone."

Gabriel said, "So he hid it."

"Yes."

Antonio's voice was low.

"And you want it."

Victor looked toward him.

"I want it destroyed."

Everyone stared.

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"You expect us to believe that?"

Victor didn't react.

"Daniel did."

Gabriel frowned.

"What?"

"That's why he met me five years ago."

Victor reached into his coat.

Gabriel's men shifted.

Victor slowly removed a folded envelope.

He handed it to Sarah.

Daniel's handwriting.

She recognized it immediately.

Victor,

If you're telling the truth, prove it.

Help me disappear.

Sarah looked up.

"What is this?"

"The beginning of Daniel's last plan."

Victor looked toward Antonio.

"Your husband discovered Reynolds had been selling pieces of the network to anyone willing to pay."

Gabriel stared.

"And Daniel asked you for help."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because by then he trusted none of you."

Victor's voice softened.

"Not even himself."

Sarah read the rest of the letter.

Daniel wanted Victor to create a believable second death.

A road accident.

He wanted Sarah and Lucy financially protected through anonymous accounts.

He wanted enough time to destroy the Mercer file safely.

Sarah reached the final lines.

Once it's gone, I go home.

Sarah's knees weakened.

"He intended to come back."

Victor nodded.

"He never did."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Gabriel stared at him.

"You expect us to believe Daniel vanished from everyone?"

Victor looked tired.

"He vanished from me."

Antonio said, "And the postcard?"

Victor frowned.

"What postcard?"

Antonio showed him.

Victor read it.

His expression changed.

"I've never seen this."

Gabriel watched carefully.

Victor's surprise looked real.

Sarah asked, "Who knew about Maine?"

She knew.

Daniel.

Sarah.

Reynolds.

Maybe Gabriel.

"Did Daniel ever tell you?" she asked Gabriel.

"He joked about it years ago."

Antonio said, "Daniel told me the day before the crash."

Victor shook his head.

"He never told me."

Sarah looked at the postcard.

They're safe. Don't come looking.

Maybe it wasn't about Sarah and Lucy being safe.

Maybe Daniel was talking about someone else.

Then Gabriel's phone vibrated.

Adrian.

Gabriel answered.

His face changed within seconds.

"What?"

Sarah stepped closer.

Gabriel put the phone on speaker.

Adrian's voice filled the warehouse.

"Gabriel, Reynolds left the hospital."

"What do you mean left?"

"Discharged himself."

"Where did he go?"

"We don't know."

A pause.

"And there's something else."

Sarah's stomach tightened.

"What?"

Adrian's voice became careful.

"Someone tried to access the townhouse."

Sarah's blood turned cold.

"Lucy?"

"She's safe."

"Where is she?"

"With me."

Sarah closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

"But the person left something at the door."

"What?"

"A package."

Gabriel said, "Don't open it."

"Didn't."

"Any label?"

"Yes."

Adrian paused.

"It's addressed to Lucy Mercer."

Sarah couldn't breathe.

"From who?"

Another pause.

Then Adrian said:

"Daniel."

The warehouse went silent.

Sarah grabbed Gabriel's phone.

"Don't touch it."

"Sarah—"

"Nobody opens anything until I get there."

She ended the call.

Then looked at Victor, Antonio, and Gabriel.

Three men.

Three versions of Daniel's past.

Three lifetimes of secrets.

She was done waiting for them to decide what she should know.

"I'm going to my daughter."

Gabriel nodded.

"So am I."

Antonio stepped forward.

"Sarah—"

She turned on him.

"No."

Her voice echoed through the warehouse.

"If Daniel is alive, I will find him."

Her eyes moved to Victor.

"If he's dead, I will find out why."

Then Reynolds's name left her lips.

"And if the man we trusted is behind this..."

Sarah's voice broke.

"...he will tell me himself."

Because after five years of being treated like someone fragile enough to protect with lies, Sarah Mercer had finally understood the truth.

The most dangerous person in Daniel's story wasn't the mafia boss.

It wasn't the dead father.

It wasn't even the man everyone called the enemy.

It was the friend who had stood beside all of them while quietly changing the story.

And somewhere in Philadelphia, Thomas Reynolds had just made his next move.
