Chapter 16 - Table Eleven’s Last Meeting

Laurel & Vine opened normally the following evening.
That was Gabriel's idea.
Marcus expected empty rooms and guards.
Instead he found diners.
Candles.
Wine.
Music.
The safest place, Gabriel argued, was sometimes somewhere violence became impossible without hundreds of witnesses.
Sarah sat at Table Eleven.
Lucy was upstairs with Emily and Adrian.
Daniel sat beside Sarah.
Gabriel opposite them.
Antonio near the window.
Reynolds stood behind the bar.
At 8:14 p.m., Marcus Shaw entered.
He wore a navy suit.
No coat.
No visible fear.
The hostess approached.
"Good evening. Do you have a reservation?"
Marcus smiled.
"Table Eleven."
Every person at the table heard.
Gabriel rose.
Marcus approached.
"You kept the restaurant open."
"You dislike witnesses?"
"I dislike amateurs."
He pulled out a chair and sat.
Sarah stared.
"Tell Daniel what you promised."
Marcus looked at her.
"Direct. I understand why he married you."
"Don't."
Marcus smiled.
Daniel's voice was cold.
"The accident."
Marcus nodded.
"You were being followed."
"By Reynolds?"
"At first."
Reynolds looked down.
Marcus continued.
"Then someone else took over."
"Who?"
Marcus looked at Antonio.
Gabriel's father went still.
Daniel stared.
"Antonio?"
Antonio shook his head.
"No."
Marcus smiled.
"Not personally."
Gabriel stood.
"Stop playing."
Marcus looked toward him.
"It was one of Antonio's men."
Antonio's face hardened.
"I never ordered that."
"No."
Marcus folded his hands.
"You ordered Daniel brought to you."
Antonio stared.
Marcus continued.
"Your man followed too closely. Daniel panicked. Lost control."
Sarah looked at Antonio.
"Your order caused the crash."
Antonio's shoulders dropped.
"Yes."
Daniel stared.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"For five years?"
Antonio looked broken.
"I pulled you out."
"After your man chased me off the road."
"I didn't know he'd pursue you like that."
Daniel laughed.
"No one here ever knows anything until after someone gets hurt."
Sarah grabbed his hand.
Marcus smiled.
"There."
Everyone looked toward him.
"That's the truth your little morality club refuses to understand."
He leaned back.
"None of you are innocent."
Gabriel answered.
"No one said we were."
Marcus's smile faded slightly.
Antonio said, "I ordered Daniel stopped because I believed he was taking the Mercer file to Victor."
Daniel stared.
"I was."
Everyone turned.
Sarah whispered, "What?"
Daniel looked at her.
"I planned to give Victor part of it."
"Why?"
"To protect you."
She closed her eyes.
"Of course."
Marcus smiled.
"Daniel made the same compromises as everyone."
Daniel faced him.
"Difference is, I regret mine."
Marcus laughed.
"Regret is vanity."
"No."
Sarah spoke.
"Regret is what happens before change."
Marcus looked at her.
Sarah continued.
"You don't regret anything."
"No."
"And that's why you're alone."
For the first time, Marcus's expression hardened.
Gabriel almost smiled.
Agent Carter entered the restaurant.
Marcus noticed.
Three other federal investigators took separate tables.
Marcus looked toward Gabriel.
"You called them."
Daniel placed the master index drive on the table.
"We did."
Marcus didn't appear worried.
"That file destroys half the city."
"No."
Daniel smiled.
"We cleaned it."
Marcus's face changed.
"Impossible."
"Five years of personal leverage is gone."
"You wouldn't."
"I did."
Marcus stared.
"Then you destroyed evidence."
"Personal secrets aren't evidence."
Agent Carter approached.
Daniel handed her a second drive.
"This contains financial records, coercion payments, shell corporations, and communications directly tied to crimes."
Marcus looked at Reynolds.
Reynolds stepped forward.
"And my testimony."
Marcus stared.
"You?"
Reynolds nodded.
"I'll testify to everything."
"You'll go to prison."
"Probably."
Marcus laughed.
"Then why?"
Reynolds looked toward Lucy's empty chair.
"Because somebody told me I have to do better."
Marcus glanced around.
Antonio stood.
"I'll testify."
Gabriel followed.
"So will I."
Victor appeared near the entrance.
Everyone froze.
He smiled faintly.
"And me."
Marcus finally looked uncertain.
Victor walked toward Table Eleven.
"You built a beautiful machine, Marcus."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"We built it."
Victor nodded.
"That's why I'm helping destroy it."
Agent Carter stepped forward.
"Mr. Shaw, we have a warrant regarding financial conspiracy, extortion, obstruction, and multiple fraud investigations."
Marcus remained seated.
He looked at Sarah.
"Do you think this ends anything?"
"No."
She shook her head.
"But it starts something."
"What?"
"Consequences."
For the first time all evening, Marcus had nothing to say.
Federal agents escorted him away.
No shouting.
No dramatic struggle.
Only a man in an expensive suit walking through a restaurant where nobody understood that an empire built on fear was ending between the dessert course and coffee.
Afterward, the table remained silent.
Then Daniel turned toward Antonio.
"You caused the accident."
Antonio nodded.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel stared at him.
"I don't forgive you."
"I understand."
"But you'll testify?"
"Yes."
"And accept whatever comes?"
"Yes."
Daniel nodded.
"Then that's enough for tonight."
Gabriel looked toward his father.
Years of anger sat between them.
Antonio whispered, "Gabriel."
"No."
Antonio stopped.
Gabriel looked toward Table Eleven.
"Not tonight."
His father nodded.
Some reunions needed time too.
Sarah finally exhaled.
"Can we go home?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Which home?"
The question carried more weight than he intended.
Sarah knew.
Their old home was gone.
Her apartment felt unsafe.
Gabriel's townhouse wasn't theirs.
Five years had destroyed the place Daniel expected to return to.
Sarah took his hand.
"I don't know yet."
Daniel nodded.
"Okay."
For once, he didn't try to solve it.
Then footsteps came from the staircase.
Emily appeared.
Alone.
Sarah stood immediately.
"Where's Lucy?"
Emily frowned.
"She came down ten minutes ago."
No one moved.
Sarah's heart stopped.
"What?"
"I thought she came to you."
Daniel was already running.
Gabriel shouted for Adrian.
The entire restaurant searched.
Bathroom.
Kitchen.
Office.
Hallways.
No Lucy.
Her yellow raincoat was gone.
So was her stuffed rabbit.
Sarah ran outside.
"Lucy!"
Nothing.
Daniel looked down.
On the wet sidewalk lay a small folded piece of paper.
He picked it up.
Childish handwriting.
DADDY,
I WENT TO GET THE SURPRISE.
DON'T WORRY.
LOVE LUCY.
Sarah stared.
"What surprise?"
Daniel's face went pale.
He knew.
Three days earlier, Lucy had asked him a question privately.
Could they go get pasta from the little restaurant where Daddy and Uncle Gabriel used to eat?
Daniel had promised.
Someday.
Sarah grabbed his arm.
"Where?"
Daniel was already moving.
"The old noodle place."
Gabriel followed.
"Is it still open?"
"No."
Sarah's blood ran cold.
"Then why would she go there?"
Daniel stared toward the dark street.
"Because someone told her it was."
May you like
And somewhere in the city, Lucy Mercer was walking toward the place where her father's story had begun.
