Chapter 10 - The Father Who Never Knew

Daniel Mercer arrived at Northwestern carrying no lawyer, no camera, and no demands.

Only questions.

Clara cried when she saw him.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

“Is it true?”

She nodded.

He looked toward Alba.

The child was coloring at a small table.

Daniel’s face crumpled.

“Five years?”

“I’m sorry.”

“Five years, Clara.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of everything.”

Daniel walked into the hallway.

Julian followed.

“You’re Judge Vance.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Twenty-four hours.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“At least I’m not last.”

Julian accepted the anger.

“You have every right to be furious.”

“I don’t want rights.”

Daniel turned.

“I want to know why someone dragged me into this now.”

Julian explained Whitmore.

Daniel listened.

Then his expression changed.

“I know that name.”

“How?”

“Whitmore Foundation funded a medical mission I worked on.”

Julian froze.

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

Before Alba.

Whitmore had known Daniel.

The revelation added another layer.

Why would Whitmore remember one doctor among hundreds?

Daniel answered.

“Because I reported financial irregularities.”

“What kind?”

“Medical charity funds being diverted into private accounts.”

“Did anything happen?”

“No. The investigation disappeared.”

Julian stared.

Whitmore had been operating financial networks for years.

Daniel had once threatened one.

And now Daniel unknowingly fathered the granddaughter of the judge Whitmore needed to compromise.

Coincidence had become impossible to trust.

Meanwhile Derek filed a new petition.

If he was not Alba’s biological father, his attorneys argued, Clara had fraudulently allowed him to assume parental obligations.

The move shocked even his own former allies.

Online reaction became vicious.

But Clara refused to hide.

During the hearing, Derek looked directly at her.

“You made me raise another man’s child.”

Clara answered calmly.

“You knew.”

The courtroom stirred.

Derek froze.

Clara’s attorney produced the private DNA test.

Dated four years earlier.

Signed acknowledgment:

DEREK COLE.

He had always known.

His narrative collapsed.

Then Clara’s attorney produced text messages.

Derek:

IF YOU EVER LEAVE ME, I’LL TELL YOUR FATHER WHAT YOU DID.

Another:

YOU’LL LOSE YOUR FAMILY BEFORE YOU LOSE ME.

Julian read them from the gallery.

Each message felt like punishment for every time he had dismissed Clara’s concerns.

The judge suspended Derek’s remaining contact pending criminal review.

Outside court, Daniel approached Clara.

“I’m not here to take Alba.”

She cried.

“I know.”

“I want to know her if you ever think that’s right.”

Clara nodded.

“Slowly.”

“Slowly.”

Alba appeared behind Clara.

She studied Daniel.

“You’re Daniel?”

He crouched.

“Yes.”

“Mom says you’re a doctor.”

“Yes.”

“Do you fix people?”

“I try.”

Alba considered that.

“Mom needs fixing.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“She has very good doctors.”

Alba handed him a yellow crayon.

“This is for sunflowers.”

Daniel accepted it.

“Thank you.”

Across the street, someone photographed the moment.

Within an hour, the picture appeared online.

But this time the caption had not come from Whitmore.

It came from millions of ordinary people sharing the image.

For the first time, Whitmore was losing control of the story.

And desperate men often made their worst mistakes when they lost control.
