Chapter 14 - Clara’s Hardest Night

Justice moved forward.

Cancer did not care.

Clara developed a serious treatment complication and was rushed into intensive care.

Julian arrived at midnight.

Alba was asleep against Evelyn.

Daniel stood nearby.

For hours, nobody spoke.

Julian sat beside Clara’s bed.

Machines beeped.

He remembered every birthday he had attended.

Every argument.

Every missed phone call.

Every opportunity pride had stolen.

At dawn Clara opened her eyes.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“Alba?”

“Safe.”

She closed her eyes.

“I’m scared.”

Julian took her hand.

“So am I.”

It was the first time she had ever heard him admit fear.

“Promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“If something happens—”

“No.”

“Dad.”

“No.”

“Listen.”

He forced himself.

“Make sure Alba knows I fought.”

His eyes filled.

“She’ll hear it from you.”

“Promise.”

“I promise.”

Clara squeezed his fingers.

“And don’t let Derek become the biggest story of my life.”

Julian nodded.

“You are the story.”

Doctors stabilized her.

The crisis passed.

Outside ICU, Daniel sat beside Julian.

“I used to hate you,” Daniel admitted.

“Why?”

“Clara talked about you in college.”

Julian smiled faintly.

“What did she say?”

“That her father could convince twelve strangers of anything but couldn’t apologize to one person.”

Julian laughed quietly.

“She was always cruelly accurate.”

Daniel looked toward Clara’s room.

“She loved you anyway.”

“I know.”

That was the tragedy.

Love had never been absent.

Only humility.

Julian returned to Clara’s bedside.

This time when she woke, Alba was there.

The little girl placed another sunflower drawing beside her pillow.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“When you get better, can we go somewhere without judges?”

Clara laughed weakly.

“Yes.”

“Without lawyers?”

“Yes.”

Alba looked at Julian.

“You can come.”

“Thank you.”

“But no robe.”

May you like

“Deal.”

For the first time, the future felt possible.
