Chapter 3 - The Thirty-Seven Missing Orders

By sunrise the next morning, Julian had voluntarily removed himself from every case connected to the investigation.

It was the first decision that surprised the courthouse.

The second was his refusal to go home.

He spent the night inside a secure conference room with investigators, reviewing the thirty-seven deleted orders recovered from backup servers.

Twenty-nine involved family cases.

Eleven involved medical records.

Eight involved emergency custody transfers.

Six contained Julian’s signature.

Only two had actually been signed by him.

Detective Torres pushed a folder across the table.

“This is bigger than Marcus.”

Julian already knew.

The cases followed a pattern.

One parent had money.

The other had vulnerability.

Cancer.

Depression.

Financial hardship.

Temporary hospitalization.

In each case, confidential information appeared in court immediately before an emergency custody petition.

Julian removed his glasses.

“How many children?”

“At least fourteen.”

He looked sick.

Fourteen children.

Fourteen families.

And his name appeared on documents used against some of them.

Torres continued.

“We traced payments to three shell companies.”

“Derek?”

“His business transferred money into one.”

“So he’s part of it.”

“Yes. But not the beginning.”

Julian leaned back.

“Who established the company?”

“We’re working on it.”

The door opened.

Evelyn entered.

“You need to see this.”

She placed her phone on the table.

A Facebook post had gone viral overnight.

JUDGE’S GRANDDAUGHTER EXPOSES COURTHOUSE CORRUPTION WITH ONE PHONE CALL.

Millions of views.

Comments multiplied by the second.

Some called Julian a hero.

Others accused him of protecting his family after ignoring ordinary parents for years.

Julian read those comments longer.

One said:

Funny how the judge cares when it happens to HIS daughter.

He put down the phone.

“That person is right.”

Evelyn studied him.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

Torres interrupted.

“We have another problem.”

A courthouse employee had come forward.

Records technician Naomi Brooks entered.

She looked terrified.

“I saw Marcus copying files,” she said.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“Why didn’t you report it?”

“I did.”

Julian leaned forward.

“To whom?”

Naomi swallowed.

“Court Administrator Raymond Hale.”

Julian froze.

Raymond Hale had been Julian’s friend for twenty-seven years.

They had started as prosecutors together.

Hale had attended Clara’s high-school graduation.

“What did Raymond say?”

“He told me Marcus was conducting an authorized audit.”

“Did you believe him?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

“I saw Marcus copying medical records from cases he wasn’t assigned to.”

“What did you do?”

“I emailed Administrator Hale again.”

“Do you still have it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“My courthouse account was wiped two days later.”

Torres leaned forward.

“Do you have proof?”

Naomi reached into her bag.

“A printed copy.”

The email was dated three months earlier.

SUBJECT: POSSIBLE UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS.

The recipient was Raymond Hale.

Julian stared at it.

Raymond had known.

And said nothing.

His phone rang.

Raymond Hale.

Julian answered.

“Raymond.”

“Julian, thank God. I’ve been trying to reach you.”

“I’ve been busy.”

“I heard about Marcus.”

“So did the internet.”

“This is getting out of control.”

Julian glanced at Torres.

“What do you suggest?”

“Come to my office. Alone.”

“Why alone?”

“Because there are things about Clara’s case you don’t understand.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“What things?”

“Things Evelyn never told you.”

Julian looked toward his ex-wife.

Evelyn stiffened.

Raymond continued.

“If you want to know why Derek really targeted your daughter, meet me before the investigators turn this into something none of us can survive.”

The line went dead.

Julian slowly lowered the phone.

Evelyn’s face had gone pale.

“What does he mean?” Julian asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Evelyn.”

“I was trying to protect Clara.”

“From what?”

She closed her eyes.

“From the reason you stopped speaking to her two years ago.”

Julian stood.

Their estrangement had begun after Clara left Derek.

Julian had believed she was throwing away her marriage impulsively.

Derek had told him Clara was unstable.

Clara had refused to explain.

Julian had chosen pride over questions.

Now Evelyn opened her handbag.

She removed an old envelope.

“I promised Clara I would never show you.”

“What is it?”

“The real reason she left Derek.”

Julian opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Bank statements.

And a police report that had never been filed.

As Julian read the first page, his face changed.

Derek had not merely been controlling.

Clara had been documenting financial coercion, threats, and repeated attempts to use Alba as leverage against her.

Then Julian reached the final photograph.

It showed Derek entering a restaurant.

Beside him was Raymond Hale.

The timestamp was two years old.

Three days before Derek came to Julian’s chambers and convinced him Clara was lying.

Julian looked up.

“You knew?”

Evelyn whispered, “Not until later.”

Julian stared at Raymond’s number on his phone.

His oldest courthouse friend had been meeting secretly with Derek since before Clara and Julian stopped speaking.

May you like

Which meant the destruction of Julian’s family had not started four months ago.

It had started two years earlier.
