Chapter 13 - The Last Lesson

Three days passed.
Then Julian received a package.
Inside was his first judicial gavel.
He had given it to Whitmore twenty-five years earlier.
Underneath was an address.
Clara begged him not to go.
He promised he would not go alone.
Federal agents surrounded the location before Julian entered.
It was an old law-school lecture hall.
Whitmore sat in the front row.
No weapon.
No escape attempt.
“You came.”
Julian remained near the door.
“You wanted me.”
“I wanted you to understand.”
“You destroyed families.”
“I exposed weaknesses.”
“You sold children.”
“I sold information.”
“Stop pretending vocabulary changes morality.”
Whitmore smiled sadly.
“You finally became the judge I wanted you to be.”
Julian stared.
“No.”
“You think I corrupted you?”
“You tried.”
“I taught you.”
“You taught me what I never want to become.”
For the first time, Whitmore’s smile disappeared.
Agents entered.
Whitmore stood.
Before they handcuffed him, he whispered:
“Ask Derek who ordered Clara’s records first.”
Julian frowned.
“Wasn’t it you?”
Whitmore smiled again.
“No.”
He was taken away.
Derek was questioned.
His answer shocked investigators.
He had not initiated the first request.
An attorney had contacted him.
Someone who knew Clara’s diagnosis and knew Derek’s custody ambitions.
Gonzalo.
The attorney whose phone Alba had picked up in Courtroom 4.
The phone that started everything.
Investigators located Gonzalo.
His office was empty.
His computer had been wiped.
But he made one mistake.
He left his cloud backups active.
Messages showed he had been funneling potential clients to Whitmore for years.
He learned about Clara through the hospital contractor.
Then approached Derek.
Derek bought the information.
Whitmore expanded the scheme.
Marcus forged the order.
The circle was complete.
But Gonzalo’s involvement created an extraordinary irony.
His carelessness had destroyed the network.
He had left his phone within reach of Alba.
The five-year-old picked it up.
Called her mother.
And exposed them all.
When investigators told Alba, she frowned.
“So I caught the bad guys?”
Julian smiled.
“You helped.”
“Do I get a badge?”
May you like
Deputy Miller gave her a plastic sheriff sticker.
She wore it proudly for three days.
