Chapter 6 - What the Medical Records Did Not Say

The oncology team quickly ruled out the darkest interpretation.
Clara’s lymphoma showed no evidence of deliberate causation.
Julian felt relief.
But Detective Torres remained interested in the timing.
Someone had accessed Clara’s insurance records before her official diagnosis appeared in county systems.
That meant the network had another source.
A hospital source.
Northwestern began an internal audit.
Within twenty-four hours, investigators identified a billing contractor who had accessed Clara’s preliminary pathology report.
The contractor had disappeared.
His apartment was empty.
His phone disconnected.
But his bank records revealed payments from the same shell company linked to Marcus.
Julian sat beside Clara when Torres delivered the news.
“So Shepherd buys information before it reaches official records,” Clara said.
“Yes.”
“Then Derek knew I had cancer before I did?”
“Possibly.”
Clara stared at the wall.
She remembered the day Derek unexpectedly appeared at her apartment.
He had brought Alba a stuffed rabbit.
He had been unusually gentle.
He asked whether Clara was tired.
Whether she had lost weight.
Whether doctors had called.
At the time, she thought he was pretending to care.
Now she understood.
“He already knew.”
Julian squeezed her hand.
Clara looked at him.
“He watched me wait for my biopsy results while knowing what they said.”
Her voice cracked.
“And he was already preparing to take Alba.”
Julian had no comforting answer.
That afternoon, the family court held an emergency hearing before an independent judge.
Julian did not attend in his judicial capacity.
He sat in the gallery.
Clara appeared remotely from the hospital.
Derek’s attorney argued that the criminal investigation did not automatically resolve custody.
Clara’s attorney responded with evidence of forged records and unlawful access.
The judge suspended Derek’s unsupervised visitation pending investigation.
Derek exploded.
“This is Judge Vance manipulating the system!”
Julian remained silent.
Derek pointed toward him.
“He abandoned his own daughter for two years! Now he wants to pretend he’s some grandfather?”
That accusation hurt because it contained truth.
Julian did not respond.
Then Clara spoke from the monitor.
“My father made mistakes.”
Everyone turned.
“So did I.”
Julian looked at her.
“But this case isn’t about whether Julian Vance was a good father to me.”
She looked directly at Derek.
“It’s about whether Derek Cole committed crimes to take my daughter.”
Derek sat down.
After the hearing, Julian waited outside.
Reporters surrounded him.
“Judge Vance, did you abuse your influence?”
“Did you know about the leaked medical records?”
“Are you resigning?”
Julian stopped.
Cameras moved closer.
“I will not discuss an active investigation.”
A reporter shouted, “Do you regret abandoning your daughter?”
Julian could have walked away.
Instead he turned.
“Yes.”
The crowd went silent.
“I regret every day I allowed pride to become more important than listening to my child.”
No legal language.
No defense.
Just truth.
The clip went viral within hours.
But another video appeared that evening.
Anonymous account.
Security footage.
Clara entering a psychiatric counseling office eighteen months earlier.

IS THIS THE WOMAN JUDGE VANCE WANTS RAISING A CHILD?
Clara stared at the post.
Only one person besides her therapist knew she had attended that appointment.
Derek.

The network was retaliating.
And this time, they were not hiding.
