Chapter 10 - Run With Leo

Dominic had been shot.

Beatrice realized it only after he reached them.

Blood soaked his shirt.

“Daddy!”

“I’m fine.”

He wasn’t.

But Leo believed him.

Dominic’s guards secured the corridor.

The surviving attacker was captured.

Beatrice expected Dominic to question him immediately.

Instead he sat beside Leo until the boy stopped shaking.

Then he found Beatrice.

She stood in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where she had danced.

The same room where everything between them had begun.

Dominic approached.

“You saved him.”

“I did what you told me.”

“No.”

His voice broke slightly.

“You stood in front of a gun.”

Beatrice looked away.

“He was scared.”

“So were you.”

“Yes.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“Why what?”

“Why didn’t you move?”

Beatrice stared at him as though the answer were obvious.

“Because Leo was behind me.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

When he opened them, something had changed.

He touched her cheek.

Not possessively.

Almost reverently.

“Never do that again.”

She gave a shaky laugh.

“I’ll schedule future invasions more conveniently.”

He laughed once.

Then winced from his wound.

Beatrice caught his arm.

Their faces were suddenly close.

For a moment neither moved.

Then Dominic whispered:

“I almost lost both of you.”

Both.

Beatrice heard it.

May you like

So did Dominic.

Neither pretended otherwise.
