Chapter 10 - The Day Gabriel Walked Into Court

The courthouse steps were packed.
Gabriel arrived without bodyguards.
Sophie walked beside him.
“You don't have to come inside,” he said.
“I know.”
“Lily needs you.”
“Lily is with Rosa.”
“Sophie.”
She stopped.
“What?”
“If this goes badly—”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You don't get to finish that sentence.”
Gabriel almost smiled.
Inside, prosecutors detailed years of Moretti operations.
Gabriel's attorneys did not deny history.
They documented his cooperation.
His restructuring.
His assistance against Victor and Vane.
His voluntary disclosure of records investigators had never known existed.
The hearing lasted hours.
When Gabriel finally spoke, reporters leaned forward.
He did not blame his father.
He did not blame Victor.
He did not blame tradition.
“I benefited from a system I should have questioned sooner,” he said. “Changing it after I was forced to see the damage does not erase that.”
Sophie watched from the gallery.
This was not the man from CAM 12.
Or perhaps it was.
Maybe the capacity had always existed.
He had simply needed something strong enough to make him look.
The judge imposed financial penalties, continued oversight, and extensive cooperation requirements.
No prison sentence.
Outside, reporters surrounded them.
One shouted:
“Mr. Moretti, do you consider yourself redeemed?”
Gabriel stopped.
“No.”
The reporters quieted.
“Why not?”
“Because redemption isn't a press release.”
He looked toward Sophie.
“It's what you do next.”
That quote spread everywhere.
But Gabriel did not care.
He took Sophie home.
They ordered pizza.
Lily insisted on pineapple.
Gabriel objected on moral grounds.
Lily informed him that a former mafia boss was in no position to judge pizza toppings.
Sophie laughed so hard she cried.
Life became strange.
And good.
Not perfect.
Gabriel still woke some nights expecting betrayal.
Sophie still hated unexpected knocks.
Lily sometimes became frightened by black SUVs.
Healing did not happen in a montage.
It happened slowly.
Repeatedly.
Through boring mornings.
School lunches.
Apologies.
Therapy.
Work.
Trust.
One evening, Gabriel returned to Moretti Tower.
The building had been sold to a legitimate real-estate company, but the Long Night Foundation maintained offices on three floors.
He went downstairs.
The old refrigerator was still there.
Sophie had refused to replace it.
Gabriel found a note taped to the door.
FOR GABRIEL.
He opened it.
Inside was Sophie's handwriting.
LONG NIGHT. EAT SOMETHING.
Below it:
AND COME HOME. LILY IS WAITING.
Gabriel smiled.
Then he noticed another line.
P.S. SO AM I.
He took one meal.
May you like
And went home.
