Chapter 6 - Sophie’s Hidden Connection

Rebecca Miller had disappeared six years earlier.

Not legally.

Emotionally.

Sophie had cut her out of her life after Rebecca began working private events for Antonio Moretti and returned one night with blood on her dress.

Rebecca refused to explain.

Sophie had been pregnant with Lily then.

She wanted no part of whatever world her sister had entered.

So she walked away.

Now Rebecca had Lily.

Gabriel asked the obvious question.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't think it mattered.”

“Everything involving Antonio matters.”

“I didn't know any of this!”

Sophie was crying now.

Gabriel lowered his voice.

“I'm not accusing you.”

“It sounds like you are.”

“I'm trying to find Lily.”

That stopped them both.

Gabriel contacted Russo.

Rebecca's phone pinged once.

South Side.

Then vanished.

Two hours later, a message arrived.

Not from Antonio.

From Rebecca.

SOPHIE ONLY. ST. AGNES CHURCH. NO MORETTI.

Gabriel read it.

“No.”

Sophie took the phone.

“Yes.”

“Absolutely not.”

“She's my sister.”

“She worked for Antonio.”

“And Lily is my daughter.”

Gabriel had no answer to that.

They compromised.

Sophie entered the church alone.

Gabriel and Russo watched from nearby.

Rebecca sat in the last pew.

Lily slept against her shoulder.

Sophie ran.

Rebecca stood.

Lily woke.

“Mom!”

The reunion lasted seconds before Sophie turned furious.

“What did you do?”

“I saved her.”

“From what?”

“Antonio.”

Rebecca looked toward the church doors.

“He was going to take her.”

Sophie froze.

“What?”

“I got there first.”

“Why?”

Rebecca began crying.

“Because this started before you ever worked at Moretti Tower.”

Gabriel listened through the audio device hidden beneath Sophie's coat.

Rebecca explained.

Six years earlier, she had discovered Antonio was laundering money through Moretti companies.

She copied evidence.

Antonio discovered her.

She ran.

But before disappearing, Rebecca hid a USB drive in Sophie's apartment.

The same drive Gabriel found.

Sophie stared.

“You put it there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because nobody connected you to me anymore.”

“You used me.”

“I was trying to keep it safe.”

“You put my daughter in danger!”

“I know.”

Rebecca sobbed.

“I know.”

Then the church doors opened.

Antonio entered.

Gabriel moved immediately.

But Antonio was not alone.

Two federal agents walked beside him.

Russo swore.

Antonio smiled.

“Gabriel,” he called toward the shadows. “You can come out.”

Gabriel stepped inside.

Sophie pulled Lily behind her.

Antonio looked almost amused.

“This has become unnecessarily dramatic.”

“You kidnapped a child.”

“No.”

He nodded toward Rebecca.

“She did.”

Rebecca shouted, “To protect her from you!”

Antonio sighed.

Then he looked at Gabriel.

“You think I'm the villain because Victor gave you convenient pieces of a story.”

“You threatened Sophie.”

“I warned her.”

“You moved money through my company.”

“Our company.”

“You forged my signature.”

Antonio smiled.

“That one was Victor.”

Gabriel stopped.

Antonio continued.

“And your father knew about every dollar.”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“Don't.”

“You've spent years pretending Salvatore wanted legitimacy.”

“He did.”

“No. He wanted insulation.”

Antonio stepped closer.

“He put you in clean businesses so investigators would see a respectable son while the old operation continued beneath you.”

Gabriel felt something inside him fracture.

Antonio smiled sadly.

“You weren't his reformer, Gabriel.”

“You were his shield.”

Sophie watched Gabriel absorb the words.

For the first time, she saw not the feared man from newspapers.

She saw a son discovering his father had lied to him.

Antonio continued.

“Victor got greedy. He began stealing from us. Your father would have killed him.”

“My father is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Did you kill him?”

The church became silent.

Antonio looked genuinely surprised.

Then he laughed.

“No.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then why was his toxicology altered?”

Antonio's smile vanished.

“What?”

That reaction looked real.

Gabriel knew lies.

Antonio had not expected the question.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“I know who altered it.”

Everyone turned.

Rebecca was shaking.

“Salvatore asked me to.”

Gabriel stared.

“What?”

“He knew he was dying.”

Antonio went pale.

Rebecca continued.

“Cancer. Pancreatic. Late stage.”

Gabriel could barely speak.

“He had a heart attack.”

“No.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“He had months. Maybe weeks. He didn't want anyone to know.”

“Why?”

“Because enemies would've moved against you before he could transfer control.”

Gabriel stepped backward.

His father had not been murdered.

He had hidden his illness to protect succession.

One mystery collapsed.

But another remained.

Victor.

The money.

The kidnapping.

The forged records.

Antonio looked toward the federal agents.

“Now perhaps we can stop treating every old Moretti secret as murder.”

Gabriel ignored him.

He looked at Sophie.

Lily was holding her hand.

All this began because Sophie saved twelve dinners.

Twelve meals had exposed a hidden refrigerator.

The refrigerator exposed Victor.

Victor exposed Dock 14.

Dock 14 exposed seventeen years of secrets.

Gabriel understood something then.

The empire had not nearly fallen because Sophie stole food.

It had nearly fallen because everyone powerful around him had become comfortable hiding waste, lies, fear, and corruption behind policies nobody questioned.

Gabriel walked toward Antonio.

“This ends.”

Antonio raised an eyebrow.

“What does?”

“All of it.”

“You can't erase the family.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked toward Sophie and Lily.

“But I can decide what survives me.”

And Antonio Moretti realized his nephew was about to do something more dangerous than revenge.

May you like

Gabriel was going to dismantle the system that had made men like them powerful.
