Chapter 16 - Victor Comes Home

Victor was released after serving part of his sentence and completing extensive cooperation requirements.

He did not contact Gabriel.

He contacted Sophie.

She showed Gabriel the message.

HE WANTS TO VOLUNTEER.

Gabriel laughed.

“No.”

Sophie waited.

“No.”

She continued waiting.

“Stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you already know I'm going to change my mind.”

“I don't.”

“You do.”

Eventually Gabriel agreed.

Victor arrived at the foundation on a rainy Tuesday.

He looked older.

Thinner.

For the first time Gabriel had ever seen him, uncertain.

Victor approached.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

Sophie nudged Gabriel.

Victor almost smiled.

“I deserve that.”

He volunteered in the warehouse.

No title.

No authority.

He lifted boxes.

Cleaned refrigerators.

Drove deliveries.

For six months, Gabriel barely spoke to him.

Then one night, Gabriel found Victor restocking the original refrigerator.

Victor placed a note beside a meal.

Gabriel read it.

SECOND CHANCES DON'T ERASE FIRST MISTAKES. THEY JUST GIVE YOU SOMETHING BETTER TO DO NEXT.

Gabriel looked at him.

“Too long.”

Victor laughed.

“Probably.”

They stood silently.

Then Victor said:

“I was wrong about her.”

“Yes.”

“I was wrong about you too.”

Gabriel looked over.

“I thought if you softened, the empire would destroy you.”

“It did.”

Victor frowned.

Gabriel smiled.

“And I'm still here.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

They never returned to what they had been.

They shouldn't.

Trust, once shattered, did not magically regenerate.

But eventually they became something else.

Two men connected by history, damage, accountability, and the difficult work of becoming different from who they once were.

Sometimes that was enough.
