Chapter 18 - The Last Camera
Moretti Tower was scheduled for renovation.
The new owners invited Gabriel and Sophie to visit before construction began.
Most of the old security equipment had been removed.
Except CAM 12.
The camera that had caught Sophie taking twelve dinners.
A technician asked:
“Want it?”
Sophie laughed.
“What would we do with it?”
Gabriel said:
“Take it.”
She stared.
“Seriously?”
“Yes.”
They brought it to the foundation.
Lily suggested displaying it beside the original refrigerator.
A small museum exhibit was created.
THE CAMERA THAT SAW A THEFT.
Beneath it:
THE PEOPLE WHO SAW SOMETHING ELSE.
Visitors came.
School groups.
Business leaders.
Restaurant owners.
Families.
Former employees.
One afternoon, Gabriel watched a little boy reading the display.
“Did she steal?” he asked his mother.
The mother thought.
“Technically, she took something without permission.”
“So yes?”
“Yes.”
“Was she bad?”
The mother looked at Sophie’s photograph.
“No.”
The boy frowned.
“How can both be true?”
The mother smiled.
“That's why rules need people to think.”
Gabriel walked away before they recognized him.
That answer stayed with him.
Rules needed people to think.
Power needed people willing to question it.
Companies needed employees who noticed what executives ignored.
And sometimes the person accused of causing a problem was actually revealing one that had existed for years.
That evening, Gabriel and Sophie returned home.
Their son was asleep.
Lily was visiting.
Dinner was chaotic.
Ordinary.
Wonderful.
Sophie caught Gabriel staring.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You're doing the thing.”
“What thing?”
“The sentimental staring thing.”
“I don't do that.”
“You absolutely do.”
Lily laughed.
Gabriel shook his head.
Once, he had controlled warehouses, ports, companies, politicians, and men who feared disappointing him.
Now he could not control whether his family mocked him at dinner.
He preferred this life.
May you like
Completely.
