Chapter 12 - The Wedding Guest Nobody Expected

Gabriel and Sophie wanted a small wedding.

Lily disagreed.

“You know too many people.”

“That isn't a reason to invite them,” Gabriel said.

“It kind of is.”

Sophie wanted no press.

Gabriel agreed.

They chose a restored brick venue overlooking the Chicago River.

Rosa helped Sophie dress.

Lily carried the rings.

Martin attended with his wife.

Detective Russo arrived complaining that Gabriel had seated him beside three defense attorneys.

Everything felt almost normal.

Then Antonio Moretti appeared.

The room changed.

Gabriel stood.

Antonio had completed a reduced sentence after cooperating with investigators.

He looked older.

Smaller somehow.

“I wasn't invited,” Antonio said.

“That observation is correct.”

Sophie touched Gabriel's arm.

Antonio looked at her.

“I came to apologize.”

Gabriel laughed once.

“You picked my wedding?”

“I assumed you'd be difficult to avoid.”

Sophie stepped forward.

“For what?”

Antonio looked at her.

“For threatening you.”

Then Lily.

“And for allowing a child to become part of something she never should have seen.”

Lily studied him.

“Are you still bad?”

Half the room stopped breathing.

Antonio almost smiled.

“I'm trying to be less so.”

Lily nodded.

“Gabriel said that too.”

Antonio looked toward his nephew.

Something old and painful passed between them.

Gabriel did not forgive him that day.

But he did not throw him out.

Sometimes healing was not reconciliation.

Sometimes it was simply refusing to continue the same war.

The ceremony began.

When Sophie reached Gabriel, he whispered:

“You look beautiful.”

“You look terrified.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Means you're paying attention.”

They smiled.

Their vows were simple.

No promises of perfection.

No promises that the past would disappear.

Only promises about what they would choose next.

When Gabriel slipped the ring onto Sophie's finger, Lily began crying.

Then denied it.

After the ceremony, instead of expensive wedding favors, every guest received a card.

LONG NIGHT. FEED SOMEONE.

The photographs went viral anyway.

But this time Sophie did not read the comments.

She danced with Gabriel.

Lily danced on his shoes.

Rosa danced with Martin.

And somewhere near midnight, twelve untouched wedding dinners remained.

Sophie looked at Gabriel.

He looked at her.

Neither needed to speak.

They packed them.

May you like

Together.
