Chapter 10 - Twelve Hours Until the Treatment Was Gone

Elena was held in an abandoned medical warehouse.

Victor sat across from her.

“You have your mother’s stubbornness.”

“You murdered her?”

Victor smiled.

“That’s an ugly word.”

“So is coward.”

He struck the table beside her.

Elena didn’t flinch.

“What did she hide?”

“I don’t know.”

“The drive wasn’t everything.”

“I don’t know.”

Victor leaned closer.

“You have twelve hours before your brother loses his treatment slot.”

Elena’s face betrayed her.

Victor smiled.

“There it is.”

He slid documents across the table.

“Sign.”

“What is it?”

“A statement saying Nico Valenti ordered the financial crimes.”

Elena laughed softly.

“No.”

“Your brother—”

“No.”

“He’ll die.”

Tears filled her eyes.

Still she shook her head.

“If I frame Nico, you’ll kill us afterward anyway.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Elena leaned forward.

“My mother figured you out.”

Her voice steadied.

“And now I have too.”

Outside, engines approached.

Victor heard them.

His face changed.

Elena smiled through her tears.

“That sounds expensive.”

The doors burst open.

Gabriel entered first.

Behind him, leaning heavily on a cane, was Nico.

His eyes found Elena.

Everything else disappeared.

“You came.”

Nico looked almost offended.

“Of course I came.”

May you like

And Elena finally understood that somewhere between the infection, the arguments and the impossible nights, she had become something Nico Valenti had never intended to have.

Someone he could not abandon.
