The Man They Tried to Break / Chapter 27 / 38

Chapter 8 - The Moretti Family Arrives

The attempt came the next afternoon.

Anna was leaving the hospital after meeting administrators about her reinstatement.

A black SUV blocked the exit.

Two men approached.

Anna recognized danger quickly enough to run.

She reached the lobby before they caught her.

Hospital security intervened.

One attacker escaped.

The other was arrested.

Inside his pocket, police found a photograph of Anna.

On the back:

LEVERAGE.

Dante arrived twenty minutes later.

Anna had never seen him so angry.

Not loud.

Not reckless.

Cold.

He rolled directly toward her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did they touch you?”

“One grabbed my arm.”

His eyes dropped to the bruise.

Anna touched his face.

“I’m okay.”

Dante closed his eyes briefly.

Then turned toward Marco.

“Bring everyone home.”

“Everyone?”

“The family.”

Within hours, the Moretti estate filled again.

But this time Dante was not defending himself.

He was leading.

Vittorio arrived.

Sofia and her daughter Elena came under guard.

Several cousins followed.

Even Vincent, released temporarily into federal custody cooperation, appeared by video.

Dante told them the truth.

Alessandro was alive.

He had manipulated accounts.

Threatened Sofia.

Used Vincent.

Possibly arranged Luca’s crash.

Then Dante said something nobody expected.

“I’m ending it.”

Vittorio frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The old businesses. The hidden accounts. The favors. Everything that gives Alessandro power.”

“You can’t dismantle generations overnight.”

“No. But I can start tonight.”

Some relatives protested.

Others remained silent.

Dante looked around.

“For years, this family treated control as love.”

Anna felt the words personally.

“We protected people by deciding for them. We kept secrets because we believed truth would hurt too much. Luca died inside those secrets.”

Sofia lowered her head.

Dante continued.

“I won’t continue it.”

Vittorio looked toward him.

“You sound like your mother.”

Dante froze.

Anna had rarely heard anyone mention her.

Vittorio’s expression softened.

“She wanted the same thing.”

“What happened?”

Vittorio looked away.

“Your father.”

The room changed.

Dante’s mother had not died from illness as he had been told.

She had attempted to leave Alessandro.

Days later, she died in a suspicious car crash.

Dante’s face became empty.

Anna moved beside him.

Not touching.

Waiting.

His hand found hers.

The family meeting lasted until midnight.

By its conclusion, most agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Vittorio surrendered documents he had hidden for years.

Not because he supported Alessandro.

Because he had feared him.

The picture became clearer.

Alessandro had ruled through secrets.

Dante had inherited an empire built on silence.

Now he was destroying the silence.

At 12:43 a.m., the estate lost power.

Backup generators failed.

Marco shouted commands.

Windows shattered downstairs.

Armed intruders entered.

Anna dropped behind a marble column.

Dante remained beside her.

He could not run.

For one terrible second, Anna understood the tactical vulnerability he lived with every day.

Then she saw something else.

He did not panic.

“Kitchen corridor,” he told her. “Thirty feet left.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

“You’re not. There’s an accessible service elevator.”

Gunfire sounded below.

Marco’s guards returned fire.

Dante propelled himself rapidly through the dark.

Anna followed.

They reached the elevator.

Nothing.

Power dead.

Dante looked toward the service ramp.

“Change of plan.”

They moved.

At the bottom, a man appeared.

Anna froze.

Dante grabbed her wrist and pulled her behind the chair as Marco’s guard tackled the attacker.

They escaped into the secure garage.

But when the emergency lights returned, one person was missing.

Elena.

Sofia screamed her daughter’s name.

A phone rang.

Dante answered.

His father’s voice spoke for the first time in seven years.

“Hello, son.”

Dante went pale.

Alessandro laughed softly.

“You’ve taken something from me.”

Dante gripped the phone.

“What?”

“My family.”

A pause.

“So I took something from yours.”

Sofia collapsed.

Dante’s voice became deadly calm.

“If you hurt Elena—”

“You’ll do what? Chase me?”

The insult was deliberate.

Anna watched Dante absorb it.

Then something remarkable happened.

He smiled.

“No, Father.”

Alessandro fell silent.

Dante continued.

“I don’t need to chase you.”

He looked at Marco.

Marco nodded.

May you like

“We already found you.”

And the line went dead.
