The Man They Tried to Break / Chapter 28 / 38

Chapter 9 - The Gala Trap

Alessandro’s call lasted long enough to triangulate.

An industrial property south of Seattle.

The same corporation that owned the boathouse where Sofia had been held.

Police mobilized.

Dante wanted to go.

Everyone objected.

Anna did not.

She asked one question.

“What can you realistically do there that police can’t?”

Dante stared at her.

Then exhaled.

“Nothing.”

“Then stay.”

He hated it.

But he stayed.

That decision marked something important.

Independence did not mean doing everything personally.

It meant choosing when assistance was useful.

Three hours later, Elena was recovered alive.

Alessandro escaped.

Again.

But he left behind documents.

Enough to connect him to the foundation theft.

Enough to connect Vincent to the forged medical files.

Enough to reopen Luca’s crash investigation.

Not enough to prove murder.

Dante needed Alessandro to make one final mistake.

So he announced another gala.

Not a charity gala.

A press conference.

He would publicly reveal the financial crimes and transfer control of the foundation to an independent board.

Alessandro could no longer profit from it.

The announcement was bait.

This time everyone knew.

Anna stood beside Dante backstage.

“You’re shaking,” he said.

“So are you.”

He looked at his hand.

She was right.

“Interesting.”

“You’re human.”

“Don’t spread that around.”

Anna smiled.

He reached for her hand.

“After tonight…”

“Yes?”

“I want to ask you something.”

“What?”

“After tonight.”

“That’s unfair.”

“I’m a Moretti.”

“Apparently.”

The press conference began.

Dante rolled onto the stage.

Hundreds watched.

Millions more streamed online.

He told the truth.

About the altered medical records.

About the stolen funds.

About Luca.

Then he did something nobody expected.

He told the truth about the accident.

“My brother was driving.”

Sofia began crying.

Dante continued.

“He made a terrible decision. He had been drinking. I spent six years believing protecting his memory meant carrying responsibility for his mistake.”

Anna’s throat tightened.

“I was wrong.”

Silence filled the room.

“Love does not require lying about what happened. Dignity does not require pretending we are perfect. And disability does not require surrendering authority over our own lives.”

Applause began.

Then stopped.

A man stood at the back.

Older.

Silver hair.

Dante’s face changed.

Alessandro.

His father had come.

Security moved.

Alessandro raised both hands.

“I’m unarmed.”

Dante stared.

“Why are you here?”

“To hear my son destroy his family.”

“No.”

Dante looked around the room.

“I’m here to stop you from destroying it.”

Alessandro smiled.

“You think they respect you?”

His eyes dropped toward the wheelchair.

“They pity you.”

Anna saw the hit land.

Dante remained composed.

Alessandro continued.

“Before the accident, men feared you.”

“Some did.”

“Now they open doors for you.”

Dante smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

Alessandro frowned.

“And sometimes I let them.”

The answer surprised everyone.

“Because accepting help doesn’t make me less powerful. Having the right to decide when I want it is the difference.”

Anna felt tears rise.

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“You always were sentimental.”

“No. Luca was.”

Dante leaned forward.

“And you killed him for it.”

Alessandro’s smile vanished.

There.

A crack.

“I never intended Luca to die.”

The room became utterly silent.

Marco’s eyes sharpened.

Cameras recorded everything.

Dante spoke carefully.

“But you sabotaged the car.”

Alessandro realized too late.

He had answered the wrong accusation.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You just said you didn’t intend him to die.”

Police moved.

Alessandro stepped backward.

For the first time, fear entered his face.

Dante looked at his father.

“Six years ago, you left me in that car.”

Alessandro said nothing.

“You saw I was alive.”

Silence.

“You walked away.”

Alessandro’s eyes flickered.

Dante understood.

So did Anna.

His father had known.

Police surrounded Alessandro.

As they placed him in handcuffs, he looked toward Dante.

“You’re nothing without this family.”

Dante’s answer came quietly.

“Then watch me become something else.”

Alessandro was taken away.

The room erupted.

Reporters shouted.

Cameras flashed.

Dante ignored them.

He looked only for Anna.

She walked onto the stage.

He reached for her.

May you like

She took his hand.

And for the first time in six years, Dante Moretti faced the world without carrying another man’s secret.
