Chapter 13 - The Betrayal Inside His Own House

The arrests exposed the final network inside the Moretti estate.

Two guards.

An accountant.

A longtime housekeeper.

All had secretly reported to Alessandro.

The betrayal hurt Dante.

But it also taught him something.

Security was not control.

Trust always involved risk.

He replaced half the estate staff—not because they had failed, but because he no longer wanted to live inside a fortress.

The gates remained.

The armed guards decreased.

Doors that had once required codes stayed open.

Anna noticed.

“So the mafia castle is becoming a home?”

“Don’t exaggerate.”

“You removed three cameras.”

“Two.”

“Three.”

“The garden camera was broken.”

“Progress.”

Dante’s rehabilitation center moved from dream to architectural plan.

Anna helped design patient protocols.

Every policy began with one principle:

ASK FIRST.

Ask before helping.

Ask before touching mobility equipment.

Ask before assuming limitations.

Dante insisted those words appear in every training room.

Anna knew exactly why.

Months passed.

Alessandro awaited trial.

Vittorio was cleared of involvement in the sabotage but publicly admitted hiding evidence.

He resigned from the board.

Vincent pleaded guilty to fraud and obstruction.

Sofia and Elena began rebuilding their lives.

The Moretti empire shrank.

Dante did not mourn it.

One evening, he and Anna returned to the dressing room where everything had begun.

The same mirror.

The same chair.

A tuxedo hung nearby.

Anna crossed her arms.

“Need help?”

Dante looked offended.

“Absolutely not.”

He put on the jacket.

Faster now.

Still not effortlessly.

But independently.

Anna watched.

“Show-off.”

“Cruel woman.”

He approached.

“Collar?”

She asked.

He smiled.

“Yes.”

Her fingers adjusted it.

Dante caught her hand.

Exactly as he had months earlier.

But this time there was no hurt.

Only memory.

“I’m still a man, Anna.”

She smiled.

“I noticed.”

He pulled her closer.

Then Marco knocked.

Anna closed her eyes.

“No.”

Marco opened the door.

“Sorry.”

“You’re not,” Anna said.

“I’m really not.”

Dante laughed.

Marco handed him an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Anna’s smile disappeared.

It showed the Moretti estate.

Taken that morning.

On the back:

YOUR FATHER WASN’T THE ONLY ONE.

Dante looked at Marco.

Marco’s expression had already changed.

The story was not finished.

Someone remained.
