Chapter 12 - Dante Leaves the Mansion

Dante did not panic.

He wanted to.

Instead, he acted.

Marco already had Anna’s location.

Police were twenty minutes away.

Dante’s security team was twelve.

Too long.

A helicopter could reach them in nine.

Dante transferred into the vehicle himself.

Marco started to help.

Dante looked at him.

Marco stopped.

“Right.”

The helicopter landed near the diner eight minutes later.

By then, Anna and Evelyn were gone.

No bodies.

No blood.

One overturned chair.

Dante found Anna’s phone beneath the table.

He stared at it.

Every fear he had tried to control became rage.

Marco placed a hand on his shoulder.

Dante almost shrugged it away.

Then stopped.

He let the hand remain.

“We’ll find her,” Marco said.

Dante nodded.

The kidnappers contacted him thirty minutes later.

Alessandro wanted the evidence.

In exchange, Anna and Evelyn would live.

Dante agreed.

Marco objected.

Dante ignored him.

The exchange would occur at the abandoned warehouse where Luca had planned to meet Alessandro six years earlier.

Dante understood the symbolism.

His father wanted to finish the story where it began.

But Dante no longer intended to play the role Alessandro wrote for him.

He coordinated with federal agents.

The evidence would be copied.

Tracking devices hidden.

Anna’s safety prioritized.

At the warehouse, Alessandro waited.

Older than Dante remembered.

Smaller.

That surprised him.

Fear had made his father enormous in memory.

Reality reduced him.

Anna sat nearby, wrists bound.

She saw Dante.

Her expression filled with relief and anger.

“You came.”

“Obviously.”

Alessandro smiled.

“My loyal son.”

Dante ignored him.

“Let them go.”

“The evidence.”

Dante held up a drive.

“First Anna.”

Alessandro looked toward the wheelchair.

“You always negotiate from weakness.”

Dante smiled.

“And you always mistake cruelty for strength.”

Alessandro’s face hardened.

He ordered Anna released.

She crossed the floor toward Dante.

Halfway there, gunfire erupted outside.

Federal agents entered.

Alessandro’s men scattered.

Anna ran.

Dante reached for her.

She dropped beside him.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You?”

“Yes.”

Alessandro attempted to escape through a rear door.

Marco stopped him.

This time there was no escape.

Evelyn survived.

Her evidence proved everything.

Alessandro had sabotaged Luca’s car intending to frighten him into silence.

He did not expect the crash to kill Luca.

But afterward, he chose not to call emergency services because doing so would expose him.

That decision turned sabotage into something far darker.

Dante listened to the confession.

Then asked one question.

“Did you know I was alive?”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Yes.”

Anna closed her eyes.

Dante did not.

“Why didn’t you help me?”

His father answered:

“Because you had chosen Luca over me.”

Dante stared at him.

Then something inside him finally released.

Not forgiveness.

Freedom.

Alessandro had not abandoned him because Dante was weak.

He abandoned him because Alessandro was.

Police took him away.

Outside the warehouse, dawn broke.

Anna stood beside Dante.

“You came after me.”

“You sound surprised.”

“You also let me go alone.”

“I hated every second.”

She smiled.

“That was trust.”

“It was torture.”

“Same family.”

Dante laughed.

Then opened his hand.

The engagement ring was there.

Anna stopped breathing.

“You brought that to a hostage exchange?”

“I’ve had it in my pocket for three days.”

“Dante—”

“Not yet.”

She stared at him.

“You are unbelievable.”

He smiled.

May you like

“Soon.”

And for once, Anna allowed the suspense.
