Chapter 18 - Before the Entire Family

Anna walked down the aisle beneath white roses and soft afternoon light.
Dante forgot every prepared thought.
She was beautiful.
Not because of the dress.
Not because hundreds of guests turned to watch her.
Because she looked directly at him.
Not the chair.
Not the cameras.
Him.
When she reached him, she whispered:
“You’re staring.”
“I’m allowed.”
“Debatable.”
He laughed.
The ceremony began.
When it came time for vows, Dante unfolded a piece of paper.
Then put it away.
“I wrote something.”
Anna smiled.
“I suspected.”
“But it sounded like a speech.”
“You do love speeches.”
“I do.”
Guests laughed.
Dante looked at her.
“So I’ll say this instead.”
The room quieted.
“Before you, people helped me because they were afraid to watch me struggle.”
Anna’s eyes filled.
“You were the first person willing to sit down and let me struggle because you understood that succeeding for myself mattered more than making yourself comfortable.”
Vittorio lowered his head.
Sofia cried openly.
Dante continued.
“You never made me prove I was still a man.”
His voice trembled.
“You simply reminded me that I never stopped being one.”
Anna wiped a tear.
“And you taught me that love isn’t doing everything for someone,” she replied. “Sometimes it’s asking. Sometimes it’s waiting. Sometimes it’s trusting them enough to make a choice you hate.”
Dante smiled.
“Boston?”
“Still annoyed?”
“Deeply.”
Everyone laughed.
They exchanged rings.
Then kissed.
At the reception, Dante danced with Anna.
Not standing.
Not pretending.
Anna sat briefly on his lap as they moved slowly across the floor, laughing while the band played.
Nobody looked uncomfortable.
Nobody called it inspiring.
Nobody treated it as tragedy.
It was simply a man dancing with his wife.
Later, Vittorio raised a glass.
“To Dante and Anna.”
Dante groaned.
“Short speech.”
Vittorio smiled.
“To the family we should have been—and the family they taught us we still can become.”
Glasses rose.
Dante looked around.
Sofia.
Elena.
Marco.
Vittorio.
Anna.
A family damaged by secrets.
Not healed perfectly.
But healing.
Then Anna leaned toward him.
“I have something to tell you.”
Dante looked suspicious.
“Should I be afraid?”
“Possibly.”
“What?”
She whispered into his ear.
His expression changed.
Shock.
Disbelief.
Then overwhelming joy.
“Are you serious?”
Anna nodded.
Dante laughed and pulled her close.
Nobody else knew yet.

That secret belonged only to them.
For tonight.
