Chapter 10 - The Ledger Behind the Linen Wall

Rosa remembered the interview.
Not Maya's original agency interview.
The second one.
The one that happened at the mansion six months earlier.
"Mrs. Bell asked strange questions," Rosa said.
They sat inside a security conference room while Gabriel recorded the conversation.
"What kind?" Maya asked.
"Whether you lived alone. Whether you had family in Chicago. Whether you were married."
Maya frowned.
"She asked everyone those things."
"No."
Rosa looked uncomfortable.
"Not like that."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because Mrs. Bell ran this house before Mr. Rossi was old enough to drive."
Rosa glanced toward Lorenzo.
"Sorry."
"It's true," he said.
"Nobody questioned her."
Lorenzo leaned forward.
"What else?"
Rosa thought.
"She asked if Maya's boyfriend had visited the agency."
Maya froze.
"Daniel?"
"You mentioned his name in your application as emergency contact."
Maya remembered.
She hadn't removed him until after the assault.
"Mrs. Bell knew who Daniel was before I started here."
"Looks that way."
Gabriel placed several old staff records on the table.
"Bell personally approved twelve hires over the last five years."
"So?" Maya asked.
"Four had partners or relatives tied to gambling debts."
Lorenzo understood first.
"Recruitment."
Gabriel nodded.
"She placed vulnerable employees inside the estate."
Maya felt sick.
"For what?"
"Information. Access. Leverage."
Maya wasn't chosen because she was qualified.
She was chosen because Daniel was compromised.
Mrs. Bell expected him to pressure her.
Maybe manipulate her.
Maybe steal through her.
But Maya hadn't cooperated.
So Daniel went around her.
And after he stole Elena's case, everything changed.
"There's something else," Rosa said.
Everyone looked at her.
"A year ago Mrs. Bell had part of the linen storage renovated."
Lorenzo frowned.
"Why?"
"She said water damage."
"There was no water damage report," Gabriel said.
Rosa shook her head.
"I thought it was strange."
The linen room sat behind the domestic wing.
Security opened it.
Maya had worked inside hundreds of times.
Rows of white sheets.
Towels.
Tablecloths.
Nothing unusual.
Rosa walked to the back wall.
"Here."
A tall cabinet covered part of the paneling.
Gabriel's men moved it.
Behind it was a newer section of drywall.
Lorenzo looked at Gabriel.
"Open it."
Inside they found a narrow compartment.
Files filled three shelves.
Paper records.
Photographs.
Employee backgrounds.
Debt histories.
Affairs.
Medical issues.
Divorces.
Everything Mrs. Bell could use.
Maya found her own folder.
Her hands trembled opening it.
Photographs of Daniel.
Records of his gambling.
Copies of her employment application.
A note.
Candidate useful. Partner financially exposed. Pregnancy increases dependency.
Maya's face went numb.
Pregnancy increases dependency.
Lily had been reduced to leverage before she was even born.
Lorenzo took the page from Maya.
His expression turned dark.
"Don't."
He looked at her.
"Don't what?"
"Make that face."
"What face?"
"The one where you decide someone deserves to die."
Gabriel suddenly found the opposite wall extremely interesting.
Lorenzo stared at Maya.
"I'm not killing anyone."
"Good."
"But I reserve the right to be angry."
"So do I."
"Then be angry."
Maya's voice cracked.
"I am."
She grabbed the folder.
"I am furious."
Tears spilled.
"I spent months blaming myself for missing what Daniel was doing."
Lorenzo said nothing.
"I thought maybe I should have noticed sooner. Maybe I should have left sooner."
She held up the page.
"But someone studied us. They knew exactly where he was weak and exactly where I was vulnerable."
Her anger became grief.
"And Lily was just a line in somebody's plan."
Rosa hugged her.
Maya allowed it.
For several minutes nobody spoke.
Then Gabriel found another folder.
"Boss."
It was labeled ELENA.
Lorenzo took it.
Inside were reports.
Her movements.
Phone contacts.
Charity meetings.
Doctors.
Friends.
Even photographs of Elena during pregnancy.
Lorenzo's hands began shaking.
Mrs. Bell had surveilled his wife inside his own home.
One report was dated the day Elena wrote the letter.
Another from the day before she died.
Lorenzo read rapidly.
Then stopped.
"What?" Maya asked.
He handed Gabriel a page.
Gabriel read.
"She met an attorney."
"Which attorney?" Maya asked.
"Rebecca Sloan."
Lorenzo looked toward the door.
"Call her."
Rebecca arrived under police escort that afternoon.
A sharp-eyed woman in her fifties, she looked at Lorenzo with no fear whatsoever.
"I wondered when Elena's secrets would catch up with you."
Lorenzo remained standing.
"You knew?"
"I knew what she authorized me to know."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because she specifically ordered me not to."
"She's dead."
"And client confidentiality does not evaporate conveniently for angry widowers."
Maya liked Rebecca immediately.
Lorenzo did not.
"What did she change?"
Rebecca opened her briefcase.
"Everything."
Elena had created a legal structure ensuring Leo inherited her ownership shares.
More importantly, if Lorenzo became unable to care for Leo, control would not pass automatically to Rossi relatives.
Instead, independent trustees would govern the assets.
Matteo's plan to gain control through guardianship could never have worked.
Unless he altered the trust documents.
"Did he know?" Gabriel asked.
"Not the final version."
"Mrs. Bell?"
"No."
Maya understood.
"So they were hurting Leo for nothing."
Rebecca's expression tightened.
"Apparently."
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
Greed had nearly killed his son chasing money Matteo could never obtain.
Rebecca continued.
"Elena anticipated pressure from the family."
"Why?"
"Because she discovered financial crimes."
Lorenzo looked toward the folder.
"She was building a case."
"Yes."
"Against Matteo?"
Rebecca hesitated.
"Against anyone involved."
Including Lorenzo.
The truth hurt.
But Lorenzo didn't flinch this time.
"What did she want done with it?"
Rebecca looked at him.
"She hoped you'd do it yourself."
"Do what?"
"Clean house."
Silence.
"Legally," Rebecca added.
"She wanted you to cooperate with authorities, separate legitimate companies from criminal operations, and raise Leo outside that structure."
Lorenzo looked toward the window.
Maya watched his face.
This wasn't a business choice.
It was identity.
Family.
Everything Lorenzo inherited.
Everything he had spent his adult life believing he controlled.
Elena had left him one final request.
Choose his son over the empire.
Rebecca placed a sealed letter on the table.
"There's one more."
Lorenzo looked at it.
"For me?"
"No."
Rebecca turned toward Maya.
"For her."
Maya stopped breathing.
"That's impossible."
"Elena wrote it seven months ago."
"I didn't know her."
"She apparently knew about you."
Maya stared at the envelope.
Her name was written across the front.
MAYA BENNETT
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside:
Maya,
If Mrs. Bell hires you, understand this: I tried to stop it. I discovered she was recruiting staff through vulnerable family connections. Your partner Daniel appeared in records connected to Matteo. I don't know whether you know what he is involved in.
I arranged for Rebecca Sloan to keep this letter in case my concerns became real.
You do not owe my family loyalty.
If you ever feel unsafe in that house, leave.
And if something happens to me, please trust your instincts around my son.
Maya couldn't continue.
Tears blurred the page.
Elena Rossi had known her name months before Maya ever knew hers.
Had tried to protect a stranger.
Had somehow anticipated that two grieving mothers might become connected through one small boy.
At the bottom, one final sentence was underlined.
Mrs. Bell is most dangerous when she believes she's protecting the Rossi family.
Lorenzo read it over Maya's shoulder.
His face went pale.
Then Gabriel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
"Understood."
He looked toward Lorenzo.
"Police reached the Bell property."
"And?"
"Empty."
"Matteo?"
"No."
"Mrs. Bell?"
"No."
Gabriel hesitated.
"They found photographs."
"Of what?"
"Maya."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
Gabriel continued.
"Dozens."
Maya felt cold.
"From when?"
"Some are recent."
Pause.
"Some were taken before she started working here."
And suddenly Elena's warning became far more frightening.
Mrs. Bell hadn't merely recruited Maya because of Daniel.
May you like
She had been studying Maya before the Rossi estate ever knew her name.
