Chapter 16 - Lorenzo Rossi Had to Choose

Matteo Rossi was charged under a list of crimes so long Maya stopped reading halfway through.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Extortion.

Tampering.

Kidnapping.

Endangering a child.

Financial crimes connected to charities.

Daniel faced charges too.

Breaking and entering.

Fraud.

Assault.

Conspiracy.

And charges connected to Maya's fall.

Mrs. Bell cooperated with investigators.

That did not erase what she had done.

But her records helped expose dozens of hidden accounts and criminal arrangements.

Evelyn accepted responsibility for falsified medical logs while prosecutors considered the threats used against her.

Marcus agreed to testify.

For once, everyone seemed to be talking.

Lorenzo talked most of all.

Behind closed doors with attorneys.

Federal investigators.

Regulators.

Accountants.

He handed over companies.

Records.

Names.

Everything Elena collected.

Everything he knew.

Some businesses were shut down.

Others placed under independent management.

Assets were frozen.

Headlines multiplied.

And each night Lorenzo returned to the small temporary residence where Leo slept.

Maya remained there for another week.

Not because Lorenzo ordered her.

Because Leo was recovering.

And because Maya still didn't feel ready to return to her apartment.

The first night after Matteo's arrest, she couldn't sleep.

At two in the morning, she found Lorenzo in the kitchen.

Of course.

"Coffee?"

she asked.

"Tea."

She stared.

"Who are you?"

"I've been advised caffeine isn't helping."

"By Dr. Grant?"

"Everyone."

Maya sat opposite him.

The kitchen light was low.

No guards inside.

No crisis.

Silence felt unfamiliar.

"What happens tomorrow?" she asked.

"More interviews."

"And afterward?"

"More interviews."

"Exciting."

"You?"

Maya shrugged.

"I don't know."

"You still have a job."

"At the mansion?"

"If you want it."

She looked at him.

"Do you?"

"Do I what?"

"Want me there."

Lorenzo answered too quickly.

"Yes."

Both noticed.

He leaned back.

"Leo trusts you."

"Leo trusts anyone warm who feeds him."

"He doesn't smile at Gabriel."

"Nobody smiles at Gabriel."

From the hallway Gabriel's voice said, "I can hear you."

Maya laughed.

Lorenzo shook his head.

Gabriel disappeared again.

Maya's smile faded.

"I don't want to become Leo's mother because mine died."

Lorenzo's expression softened.

"I know."

"I don't want everyone looking at me like I saved him."

"You did."

"No. Doctors saved him. Clean food saved him. Investigators stopped Matteo."

"You walked into the room."

Maya looked away.

Lorenzo continued.

"Everyone else followed procedures."

"Procedures matter."

"They do."

"But?"

"But sometimes somebody notices what procedures missed."

Maya stared at her hands.

"I was thinking about Lily."

"I know."

"It wasn't bravery."

"What was it?"

"Grief."

"Maybe both."

She didn't argue.

After a while she asked, "Do you think Elena would hate me being here?"

Lorenzo seemed surprised.

"No."

"How can you know?"

"Because apparently she wrote you more letters than she wrote me."

Maya laughed.

Then he became serious.

"She would want you to choose your own life."

Those words mattered.

Not stay.

Not leave.

Choose.

Maya nodded.

"What are you choosing?"

Lorenzo looked at his tea.

"I signed an agreement today."

"What kind?"

"Restructuring."

"Meaning?"

"The Rossi companies that survive become fully legitimate. Independent boards. Compliance oversight."

Maya raised an eyebrow.

"You even sound boring now."

"It's horrifying."

"What about everything else?"

"Gone."

"The organization?"

"Gone."

"Men loyal to your father?"

"They'll make their own choices."

"Some won't like yours."

"No."

"Are you safe?"

Lorenzo gave her a look.

"Relative term."

Maya sighed.

"Of course."

He continued.

"I also agreed to cooperate with prosecutors."

"Could you still go to prison?"

"Possibly."

Her chest tightened.

"When do you know?"

"Months."

"Leo?"

"Sofia if necessary."

Maya hated how much that answer hurt.

She didn't want Lorenzo imprisoned.

Not because she believed he was innocent of everything.

She didn't know enough to make that judgment.

But she had watched him choose differently every day.

Leaving the mansion instead of chasing Matteo.

Giving evidence to police.

Turning over his father's ledger.

Choosing Leo.

Choosing Elena's request.

People could be responsible for their past and still become better than it.

Both truths could exist.

Maya reached across the table.

Her hand covered his.

Lorenzo looked down.

Then at her.

"This isn't forgiveness for whatever you've done."

"I know."

"It's not a promise."

"I know."

"It's not—"

"Maya."

"What?"

"You don't have to explain kindness."

She stopped.

That sentence stayed with her.

The following morning Leo had another appointment.

He had gained weight.

Not much.

But enough for Dr. Grant to smile.

"He's moving in the right direction."

Lorenzo looked at the scale three times.

"Are you sure?"

Dr. Grant rolled his eyes.

"I went to medical school."

"I've met doctors."

"You are exhausting."

Maya laughed.

Leo tolerated the bottle.

Still hesitated.

Still occasionally cried when feeding began.

But each successful meal taught him something new.

Food didn't have to hurt.

Maya understood that kind of relearning.

She had her own version.

A man raising his voice didn't always mean violence.

A closed door wasn't always a trap.

Love wasn't always followed by apology.

Kindness didn't always demand payment.

Healing was teaching the nervous system a new story.

That afternoon Maya returned to her apartment with Rosa.

They cleaned.

Threw away Daniel's belongings.

Packed Lily's nursery items carefully.

Maya held the white rabbit.

The stitches had been repaired.

She cried when she saw them.

Rosa waited.

"What do you want to do with the baby things?"

Maya looked around.

For weeks she couldn't answer that.

Now she could.

"Keep some."

"And the rest?"

"Donate them."

Rosa nodded.

Maya selected Lily's blanket.

Ultrasound photographs.

Hospital bracelet.

Rabbit.

A tiny knitted hat.

Five objects.

A whole life represented by things small enough to fit inside one box.

It hurt.

But the box no longer felt like a grave.

It felt like memory.

When Maya returned to the temporary house, Lorenzo stood on the porch holding Leo.

The baby wore a blue cap.

Maya approached.

Leo saw her.

His face changed.

A real smile this time.

Wide.

Gummy.

Undeniable.

Maya stopped.

Lorenzo grinned.

"Say it."

"No."

"Say it."

"Fine."

She laughed through sudden tears.

"He smiled."

"I told you."

Leo kicked.

Maya touched his cheek.

Something inside her loosened.

Loving Leo did not replace Lily.

Nothing could.

There was room for both.

That night Maya placed Lily's memory box beside her bed.

For the first time since the hospital, she said her daughter's name without immediately breaking apart.

"Goodnight, Lily."

Then from the next room came Leo's cry.

Maya smiled.

Before she could stand, she heard Lorenzo.

"I've got him."

She remained in bed.

That mattered too.

Leo had a father.

She didn't need to save everyone.

She closed her eyes.

May you like

And slept.
