Chapter 7 - Someone Had Been Feeding Leo Lies

Union Central Station had more cameras than the Rossi mansion.
That was the first thing Gabriel liked about it.
The second was that Matteo knew Lorenzo knew that.
If Matteo wanted the key, he couldn't simply send armed men into the station without creating evidence.
At least, that was the theory.
Maya wasn't convinced.
She sat in the back of an armored SUV while Gabriel explained the plan.
"You and Mr. Rossi enter through the south concourse."
"Why am I going at all?" Maya asked.
"Because the locker is registered to Daniel under a false ID, and Matteo may have put secondary verification in place."
Lorenzo sat across from her.
"You wanted to be involved."
"I wanted to search my apartment, not join a criminal scavenger hunt."
"Too late."
Maya glared.
Gabriel wisely continued.
"We'll have plainclothes security around the station. Nobody moves unless I authorize it."
"And police?" Maya asked.
Silence.
She looked at Lorenzo.
"Of course."
"This evidence may involve family companies."
"That's exactly why police should see it."
"Eventually."
Maya shook her head.
"You're unbelievable."
"So I've been told."
The car stopped.
Before exiting, Lorenzo handed Maya a small emergency transmitter.
"If we get separated, press this."
"What does it do?"
"Brings half the security team to your location."
"Comforting."
"It should be."
"It wasn't."
They entered the station.
Commuters rushed around them.
Announcements echoed overhead.
Nobody seemed to notice Lorenzo.
He wore a charcoal overcoat and baseball cap.
Without the tailored suit and entourage, he could almost pass for an ordinary man.
Almost.
Maya walked beside him.
"Do people ever recognize you?"
"Sometimes."
"What happens?"
"They pretend they don't."
"That sounds healthy."
He glanced at her.
"You talk more when you're nervous."
"You become more annoying."
"Maybe we're both nervous."
Maya looked at him.
He was watching the crowd.
Not joking.
The admission surprised her.
They reached the lockers.
Number 117 sat near the bottom row.
Maya held the brass key.
"Ready?"
"No."
"Good."
"What?"
"People who say yes usually aren't paying attention."
She inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside sat the metal box Maya remembered.
Lorenzo inhaled sharply.
"You recognize it."
"Elena's."
Maya looked at him.
"You said Daniel had it."
"He did."
"Then how was it Elena's?"
Lorenzo crouched.
"My wife kept personal documents in a case like this."
"Maybe lots of people own the same case."
"Not with that dent."
A shallow mark crossed one corner.
Lorenzo touched it.
"She dropped it during our honeymoon."
Maya stared.
"How did Daniel get your dead wife's box?"
"That's what we're about to learn."
They lifted it out.
No secondary lock.
Inside were three items.
A flash drive.
A paper ledger.
And an envelope addressed by hand.
LORENZO
Lorenzo stopped breathing.
Maya recognized grief when she saw it.
"Her handwriting?"
He nodded.
For several seconds he couldn't open it.
Then he did.
The letter was short.
Lorenzo read silently.
His face lost color.
Maya didn't ask.
Eventually he handed it to her.
Lorenzo,
If you're reading this, I failed to tell you before it became dangerous. Matteo has been moving money through the children's medical charity and using Rossi companies to hide it. I found records. When I confronted him, he threatened me. I copied everything.
He believes the evidence is on the drive. It isn't. The drive is only the map.
I didn't tell you because I knew what you would do. I wanted proof strong enough that this could end without Leo growing up surrounded by another war.
If anything happens to me, protect our son before you protect the Rossi name.
Please choose differently than the men who raised you.
I love you.
Elena
Maya's hands trembled.
"When did she write this?"
"I don't know."
"Before Leo was born."
"Obviously."
His voice was rough.
Maya handed it back.
Lorenzo folded it carefully.
The ledger contained transaction numbers and initials.
The flash drive held encrypted files.
"The map," Maya said.
"To the real evidence."
"Where?"
"We need to decode it."
Gabriel's voice came through Lorenzo's earpiece.
"Movement. North entrance."
Lorenzo immediately shut the case.
"Who?"
"Possible Matteo associate."
Maya's heart accelerated.
Lorenzo took her arm.
"Time to go."
They moved toward the south exit.
A man appeared twenty yards away.
Maya recognized him.
Marcus.
The fake maintenance contractor.
"There."
Lorenzo saw him.
Marcus didn't approach.
He simply lifted a phone.
Maya's emergency transmitter suddenly vibrated.
Then every station screen flickered.
For one second they went black.
When they returned, an image appeared on several advertising displays.
Daniel.
Still seated in the warehouse.
A live camera.
His face bruised but conscious.
Then Matteo stepped into frame.
Maya couldn't hear him through the station noise.
Lorenzo's phone rang.
He answered.
"You wanted my attention."
Matteo smiled on the screen.
"Open the box."
"We did."
"Good."
"You killed Elena?"
Matteo's smile vanished.
"I didn't touch her."
"She was afraid of you."
"Elena was afraid of what you'd become if you knew the truth."
"What truth?"
"You built an empire believing you were protecting your family. Meanwhile she was collecting evidence against all of us."
"Against you."
"Against the organization."
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
Matteo continued.
"Your wife wanted out."
"She wanted Leo safe."
"Same thing."
Maya watched Lorenzo's expression.
The letter had cracked something open inside him.
Elena hadn't wanted revenge.
She wanted an exit.
A different life for their child.
Matteo's voice continued through the phone.
"The drive gives you coordinates."
"To what?"
"The original accounts."
"Why do you need the key if you already know?"
"Because I didn't know which locker Daniel used."
Maya spoke.
"Why did Daniel steal it?"
Matteo laughed.
"Because Daniel was always greedy."
"How did he get it?"
"He broke into the Rossi lake house looking for cash. Found the box instead. He realized it mattered. Then tried selling it back to me."
Lorenzo's eyes hardened.
"And Maya?"
"Collateral."
Maya felt nausea rise.
"Then why follow me?"
"Because Daniel told me he'd hidden the key somewhere I couldn't reach."
Matteo looked directly into the camera.
"He said the only person who could find it was the woman who knew him best."
Maya whispered, "He used me."
"Daniel uses everyone."
For once Matteo sounded almost truthful.
Lorenzo asked, "Why Leo?"
Matteo went silent.
Then smiled faintly.
"Because Elena planned ahead."
"What does that mean?"
"The foundation shares transfer to Leo."
Lorenzo froze.
Matteo continued.
"Elena restructured her holdings before she died. Forty percent of the legitimate Rossi companies now belong to your son through trust."
Maya understood.
"If Leo dies..."
"The shares revert according to older family agreements."
"To Matteo?" she asked.
"Among others."
Lorenzo's voice became deadly calm.
"You starved my son for money."
Matteo's smile disappeared.
"I needed time."
"Time for what?"
"To recover Elena's evidence before Leo reached a medical crisis that triggered a full external review."
"You nearly killed him."
"I controlled the dosage."
Dr. Grant's words echoed in Maya's mind.
Symptoms someone deliberately created.
She felt physically sick.
"You made him look ill," she whispered.
Matteo ignored her.
Lorenzo didn't.
Something changed in his eyes.
He had just heard enough.
Not suspicion.
Not theory.
Confession.
Gabriel's voice came through the earpiece.
"We recorded that."
Matteo seemed to realize too late.
The station screens went black.
The phone disconnected.
Lorenzo immediately turned to Maya.
"We're leaving."
"What about Daniel?"
"Matteo kept him alive because he was useful."
"For now."
"We'll find him."
They moved.
Then Maya noticed Marcus again.
This time he was running toward the north exit.
"He's leaving."
Lorenzo didn't chase him.
Maya was surprised.
"Why aren't you—"
"Because Gabriel has three men outside."
Seconds later, security confirmed Marcus was detained.
The confrontation ended without gunfire.
Without chaos.
Exactly the kind of outcome Elena's letter had asked Lorenzo to choose.
Maya noticed.
So did Lorenzo.
Back inside the armored SUV, Gabriel connected the flash drive to an isolated laptop.
Encrypted folders appeared.
One file opened.
A map.
Not geographical.
A diagram of company ownership.
At its center was a children's medical foundation founded by Elena Rossi.
Beside one branch was a handwritten digital note.
Original records stored where Leo's name first appeared.
Lorenzo stared.
Maya frowned.
"Where did Leo's name first appear?"
"Birth certificate?"
Gabriel suggested.
Lorenzo shook his head slowly.
"Before that."
He looked toward Maya.
"The sonogram."
"Where?"
Lorenzo's expression changed.
"Elena's private study."
Gabriel closed the laptop.
"We searched it after she died."
Lorenzo stood.
"You searched what you knew existed."
Maya felt another chill.
"There was something hidden."
Lorenzo nodded.
May you like
And somewhere inside a room preserved exactly as Elena Rossi had left it, they were about to discover why a dead woman had gone to extraordinary lengths to protect a future she knew she might never see.
