Chapter 5 - One Swallow Changed Everything

By sunrise, the Rossi mansion no longer felt like a home.
It felt like a crime scene.
Security guards occupied every corridor.
Employees were separated and questioned.
Kitchen storage rooms were sealed.
Feeding supplies disappeared into labeled evidence bags.
Two technicians arrived to examine the sabotaged security network.
Nobody was permitted to leave.
Maya sat in Lorenzo's private library with a cup of coffee she hadn't touched.
Across from her stood a wall of windows overlooking Lake Michigan.
Dawn painted the water silver.
She had been awake for more than twenty-four hours.
Her body felt hollow.
Her mind wouldn't slow down.
The photograph lay on the desk.
Maya leaving Mercy General Hospital three weeks earlier.
She wore the same oversized gray coat she remembered.
Her face looked empty.
A timestamp was printed at the bottom.
9:14 a.m.
Someone had been waiting.
Watching.
Photographing.
Lorenzo entered without knocking.
It was his library.
Maya almost laughed at herself for noticing.
He had changed clothes.
Dark trousers.
Black sweater.
No weapon visible, though Maya assumed one wasn't far away.
He closed the door.
"Leo is sleeping."
Maya exhaled.
"Did he keep everything down?"
"Yes."
Her eyes filled before she could stop them.
Lorenzo noticed.
"Why does that matter so much to you?"
Maya stared at the photograph.
"You know why."
"I know you said you had a daughter."
She swallowed.
"Her name was Lily."
Lorenzo waited.
Maya didn't want to continue.
Yet after everything that happened in the nursery, silence felt useless.
"Thirty-eight weeks."
His expression shifted.
"I'm sorry."
"People keep saying that."
"I won't say it again."
That surprised her enough to look at him.
Lorenzo walked toward the windows.
"Elena hated condolences."
"Your wife?"
He nodded.
"When her mother died, she said people used 'I'm sorry' because they couldn't tolerate silence."
Maya thought about that.
"She might have been right."
"Usually was."
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Lorenzo turned.
"Tell me about Daniel."
Maya's stomach tightened.
"Why?"
"Because people connected to him entered my house."
"You don't know that."
"The man following you used Daniel's surname."
"Fake surname."
"Probably."
"Then what do you want?"
"Everything."
Maya stood.
"No."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
"Excuse me?"
"You don't get everything."
"A man infiltrated my estate."
"I understand."
"My son may have been deliberately deprived of food."
"I understand."
"You were specifically targeted."
"I understand that too."
"Then sit down."
The command reminded Maya too much of Daniel.
She moved toward the door.
Lorenzo stepped aside.
That stopped her.
He wasn't blocking her.
He wasn't grabbing her.
He wasn't threatening her.
"If you want to leave the room," he said, "leave."
Maya stared at him.
"But until I know who's targeting you, leaving the estate isn't safe."
"For me or for you?"
"Both."
"Am I a prisoner?"
"No."
"Then open the gates."
"I will."
His answer came immediately.
"If that's what you choose."
Maya hadn't expected it.
Lorenzo continued.
"I'll also give you security."
"I don't want your men following me."
"Someone already is."
That landed.
Maya sat again.
Lorenzo returned to the desk.
"Daniel."
She took a breath.
"Daniel Cole. Thirty-two. We dated for almost three years."
"Occupation?"
"He changed occupations whenever someone asked."
Lorenzo's eyebrow lifted.
"He called himself a consultant."
"For what?"
"Apparently owing money."
Lorenzo almost smiled.
Almost.
Maya continued.
"He gambled. Borrowed. Lied. Sometimes he disappeared for days."
"Did he ever mention names?"
"Not ones I believed."
"Try me."
"Vargas. Kessler. Matteo."
Lorenzo's face changed.
Maya noticed immediately.
"What?"
"What did you say?"
"Matteo."
"Last name?"
"I don't know."
"Context."
"Daniel came home angry maybe two months ago. He was yelling on the phone. He said, 'Tell Matteo I'll have it by Friday.'"
Lorenzo looked toward the window.
"Do you know someone named Matteo?"
He didn't answer.
"Mr. Rossi."
"Yes."
"Who?"
"My cousin."
Maya felt cold.
"Matteo Rossi?"
Lorenzo nodded.
"What does he do?"
"Financial operations for several family companies."
"Does he gamble?"
"Not that I know."
"Lend money?"
Lorenzo's expression became unreadable.
"Everyone lends money."
"That sounds like a yes."
He ignored it.
"Anything else?"
"Daniel once said he'd finally found people who understood business."
"What kind of business?"
"He never told me."
"Did he know you worked here?"
"Of course."
"When did you tell him?"
"When I got hired."
"Did he ask questions?"
Maya thought back.
Too many things suddenly looked different.
Daniel asking whether Lorenzo lived at the mansion full-time.
Daniel joking about whether the house had vaults.
Daniel wanting to know if celebrities visited.
At the time Maya assumed he was curious.
Now she wasn't sure.
"Yes."
"What kind?"
"Security. Staff schedules. Whether you were home."
Lorenzo went very still.
"And you answered?"
"I told him almost nothing."
"Almost?"
"I said you traveled sometimes. That's public knowledge."
"Not always."
Maya's defensiveness rose.
"I didn't give him codes or floor plans."
"I'm not accusing you."
"It sounds like it."
Lorenzo sat opposite her.
"Then listen carefully. If I thought you knowingly endangered my son, we wouldn't be having this conversation."
Maya believed him.
That wasn't comforting.
He pushed the photograph toward her.
"Who took this?"
"I don't know."
"The contractor?"
"Maybe."
"Did Daniel know you lost Lily?"
Her throat tightened.
"He caused it."
Lorenzo's hand stopped.
Maya immediately regretted saying it.
Not because she wanted to protect Daniel.
Because speaking the truth made it real.
"What happened?"
"You don't need that."
"If Daniel is capable of hurting you—"
"He pushed me down the stairs."
Silence.
Maya kept staring at the photograph.
"He wanted money. I said no. We argued. He grabbed me. I tried to leave."
Her voice became distant.
"The next thing I remember clearly is the ambulance."
Lorenzo said nothing.
His stillness changed.
The room seemed to darken around him.
Maya noticed his hands.
One had closed into a fist.
"Did police charge him?"
"They're looking for him."
"That wasn't my question."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because they can't charge someone they can't find."
Lorenzo looked toward the door.
Maya recognized what was happening.
"Don't."
His eyes returned to her.
"Don't what?"
"Whatever you're thinking."
"You don't know what I'm thinking."
"I've seen men angry on my behalf before."
Daniel had once punched another man for insulting her.
Three months later he became the man she feared.
Maya continued.
"I don't need revenge."
Lorenzo's gaze held hers.
"What do you need?"
Nobody had asked her that.
Not the police.
Not the hospital.
Not Rosa.
Everyone asked what happened.
What she planned to do.
Where she would stay.
Whether she was safe.
Nobody asked what she needed.
Maya didn't know how to answer.
"I need my life back."
Lorenzo nodded once.
"Then we'll start there."
Before Maya could respond, Gabriel entered.
He carried a sealed folder.
"We have preliminary results."
Lorenzo stood.
"The bottle?"
"Something was added."
Maya's stomach dropped.
"What?"
"Lab is still identifying it. Doctor says it could explain aversion, nausea, and lethargy."
Lorenzo's face became stone.
Gabriel continued.
"The wineglass contained a sedating substance. Evelyn likely didn't drink voluntarily."
"Meaning?"
"Someone wanted her unconscious."
"And Doyle?"
"Concussion. He remembers someone calling him downstairs because of a false security alert."
"Who called?"
"The request came through an internal extension."
"Which?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"Your cousin's office."
Lorenzo didn't react visibly.
Maya did.
"Matteo?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"How does she know about Matteo?"
Lorenzo answered without looking away from him.
"Daniel knew him."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"That's a problem."
"Find Matteo."
"We already tried."
"And?"
"His suite is empty."
"Car?"
"Still here."
"Phone?"
"Left on his desk."
Maya whispered, "He's inside the mansion."
Gabriel nodded.
"Probably."
Lorenzo walked toward the door.
Gabriel stopped him.
"There's more."
Lorenzo turned.
"We recovered part of the deleted nursery footage."
"And?"
Gabriel opened a tablet.
The screen showed a grainy hallway image from several nights earlier.
A figure approached the nursery carrying a tray.
Not Evelyn.
Not Cynthia.
A man.
His face was partially obscured.
But he wore a distinctive silver watch.
Lorenzo stared at the screen.
Maya looked between the two men.
"You recognize him."
Gabriel's voice was quiet.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Lorenzo didn't answer.
Instead he replayed the footage.
Again.
Again.
Then he enlarged the man's wrist.
The watch had a black face.
Silver bezel.
A small scratch across the band.
Lorenzo's expression went cold.
"My father gave him that watch."
Maya understood.
"Matteo."
Lorenzo switched off the screen.
For years, Lorenzo Rossi had built his reputation on knowing where danger came from.
Competitors.
Police.
Rivals.
Enemies.
But the person standing outside his son's nursery had shared Christmas dinners with him.
Had stood beside him at Elena's funeral.
Had held newborn Leo and called him family.
And somewhere inside the sprawling mansion, Matteo Rossi was still hiding.
Before Lorenzo could leave the room, his phone rang.
A blocked number.
Everyone looked at it.
Lorenzo answered.
"Speak."
A man's voice filled the silence.
"You always were slow when it mattered, cousin."
Lorenzo's face changed.
"Matteo."
A quiet laugh.
Then:
"Ask your little maid where Daniel is."
Maya stopped breathing.
Lorenzo looked at her.
"What do you want?"
Matteo answered.
"What belongs to me."
"And what is that?"
"The thing your wife died protecting."
The line went dead.
For several seconds nobody moved.
Then Lorenzo whispered a name Maya had never heard before.
"Elena knew."
May you like
And whatever secret his wife had taken to the grave was suddenly at the center of everything.
