Chapter 11 - What Lorenzo’s Wife Left Behind

The oldest photograph of Maya was eight months old.
She stood outside a prenatal clinic holding a small white envelope containing her first ultrasound image.
Daniel wasn't with her.
Maya remembered that morning.
She had waited forty minutes for him.
He claimed afterward that work kept him away.
Now she wondered if he had been meeting Matteo instead.
Another photograph showed Maya grocery shopping.
Another entering her apartment.
Another meeting Rosa for coffee before her Rossi job interview.
Mrs. Bell had followed her.
Or paid someone to.
"Why?" Maya asked.
Nobody had an answer.
Then Rebecca noticed the dates.
"Wait."
She arranged the photographs chronologically.
"This began two weeks after Elena found Daniel's name."
Lorenzo looked at her.
"Where?"
"In financial records."
Daniel had borrowed money through an underground lending operation connected indirectly to Matteo.
Elena was tracing names.
Daniel's appeared repeatedly.
Then Elena discovered his girlfriend had applied to a staffing company used by the Rossi estate.
"Mrs. Bell saw opportunity," Gabriel said.
"Elena saw danger," Rebecca added.
Maya looked down at the photographs.
"So Elena was watching me too."
"Possibly to determine whether you were involved."
"Was I?"
Rebecca's face softened.
"Her notes say no."
That shouldn't have mattered.
Yet it did.
A dead stranger had investigated Maya and concluded she wasn't part of Daniel's crimes.
Maybe Elena had seen something Maya herself hadn't.
That Daniel's choices belonged to Daniel.
Not her.
Lorenzo read more of Elena's notes.
The woman he married had been conducting her own quiet investigation for nearly a year.
She knew Lorenzo would respond aggressively if she told him too early.
So she gathered proof.
She trusted attorneys.
Auditors.
Outside investigators.
People disconnected from the Rossi family.
And she documented everything.
Including her fear of Mrs. Bell.
Lorenzo sat alone with the files for almost an hour.
Maya nearly left him.
Then he spoke.
"I trusted Bell with Elena."
Maya sat across from him.
"That isn't your fault."
He gave her a look.
"Don't."
"What?"
"People keep telling you Lily wasn't your fault. You hate it."
Maya went still.
"You noticed."
"Yes."
"So don't tell me this wasn't mine."
"It's different."
"Is it?"
He held up the surveillance reports.
"I gave Bell access."
"Because she'd served your family for decades."
"I ignored Elena when she said Bell was too loyal to my father."
"Did Elena tell you she was dangerous?"
"No."
"Then you didn't know."
"I should have."
Maya understood that sentence.
It lived inside grief.
I should have known.
I should have noticed.
I should have left.
I should have protected.
Two people could spend lifetimes punishing themselves with information they only gained afterward.
Maya said, "Maybe we both need to stop believing hindsight is a warning we ignored."
Lorenzo looked at her.
The sentence settled between them.
Neither accepted it completely.
But neither rejected it.
A cry came through the monitor.
Leo.
Lorenzo stood immediately.
Maya smiled faintly.
"That sound controls you."
"Apparently."
They went to him.
Leo was hungry.
This time Lorenzo fed him from a clean bottle while Maya watched.
The baby hesitated at first.
Then drank.
Slowly.
Carefully.
But he drank.
Lorenzo barely breathed.
"He's doing it."
Maya nodded.
"He is."
A tiny smile appeared on Leo's face after the bottle slipped away.
Gas, probably.
But Lorenzo stared as if his son had delivered a speech.
Maya laughed.
"Don't start."
"What?"
"You're about to tell everyone he smiled."
"He did."
"He's two months old."
"He smiled."
"At air."
"Jealousy is unattractive."
Maya stared at him.
Then laughed again.
Rosa entered and stopped.
She looked between them.
"I haven't heard either of you laugh in weeks."
Lorenzo immediately became serious.
"I wasn't laughing."
Rosa rolled her eyes and left.
The moment mattered more than Maya wanted it to.
Because happiness had become frightening.
Like forgetting Lily for half a second.
But this time Maya didn't punish herself.
She let herself smile at Leo.
Just once.
That afternoon investigators made another discovery.
A second layer of Elena's records was hidden within charitable foundation accounts.
Payments to Bell.
Not from Matteo.
From Lorenzo's father decades earlier.
Mrs. Bell had been more than an employee.
She had managed discreet operations.
Bribery.
Surveillance.
Information collection.
She believed loyalty to the Rossi patriarch mattered above law, morality, even family members who tried to change direction.
When Lorenzo's father died, Matteo inherited her loyalty because he represented the old ways.
Lorenzo represented reform.
Elena represented the end of everything Bell believed the family should be.
Leo represented its future.
To Bell, that future had to be controlled.
The motive finally made sense.
But location remained unknown.
Until Gabriel received a call from the hospital.
Anthony Doyle, the injured nursery guard, remembered something.
The fake emergency that lured him away came from a voice he recognized.
Mrs. Bell.
She told him Lorenzo had collapsed in his office.
Doyle rushed downstairs.
Marcus attacked him.
Before losing consciousness, Doyle heard Bell say:
"Take him to Saint Catherine's if this goes wrong."
Lorenzo knew the name.
Saint Catherine's was a closed Catholic school outside Chicago.
His father had donated money there.
Mrs. Bell's sister had once been a nun.
The property had been abandoned for fifteen years.
Security pulled satellite records.
A vehicle registered to one of Matteo's shell companies had been seen nearby.
They had their location.
This time police would lead.
Lorenzo agreed.
Gabriel seemed genuinely shocked.
"Don't make a face," Lorenzo said.
"I'm adapting."
"Elena would be proud."
The words silenced him.
Maya prepared to remain with Leo.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Something made her answer.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then Mrs. Bell's voice.
"Maya."
Every hair on her arms rose.
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere you shouldn't come."
"What do you want?"
"You've misunderstood me."
"Then explain starving a baby."
Mrs. Bell inhaled.
"I never wanted him harmed."
"But you did harm him."
"Matteo became reckless."
"You helped him."
"I tried to save this family."
"From what?"
"From Lorenzo."
Maya looked through the glass at Lorenzo speaking with Gabriel.
Mrs. Bell continued.
"Elena changed him. Made him weak."
"No. She made him a father."
"You don't understand men like Lorenzo."
"I understand enough."
"No, child."
Bell's voice became strangely gentle.
"You're beginning to care for him."
Maya's stomach dropped.
"And that will destroy you too."
Before Maya could answer, a sound came through the phone.
A man shouting.
Matteo.
Then something crashed.
Mrs. Bell whispered urgently.
"He knows we're leaving."
"Who?"
"Matteo."
"Leaving where?"
"Listen carefully. I made mistakes. Terrible ones."
Maya stopped breathing.
"But Matteo is going after Leo himself."
The line disconnected.
Maya turned toward the safe room.
Toward the child asleep inside.
Then every light in the mansion went out.
Again.
This time Maya knew immediately.
Matteo wasn't waiting at Saint Catherine's.
He had sent everyone there.
May you like
And he was coming back to the Rossi estate.
